I'm a chump. The breakdown needs more noise, it just sounds like a smear
But I'm not huge on SJ in general. The album art is prob the worst they've ever come up with
Sorry thought this was the contrarian thread

Just wanna clarify it's a pretty good version, just think the energy of the chorus doesn't quite land in the way it should lol

Hahah it's because he's a genius

Yeah he definitely just thinks it’s cool to do that with the pronunciation. Panda has always been unashamedly boyish in his work, always does stuff that is “cool”. He skateboards and plays video games

almost as exciting as TS2 being released is the announcement of new AC shows which will surely be the beginning of a new era of sounds, aesthetics, band set-up, and ... songs.

It's unfortunate that Noah's songwriting for the band has only gotten worse over the years. I feel like he now reserves the best stuff for his solo work and leaves the scraps for AC

no disrespect to PB but when were his AC jams better than his solo ones? MPP? maybe

Yeah no disrespect, his solo stuff is godly so whatever works for him. But I reckon MPP represents a sort of pinnacle for him for AC stuff. Imagine Daily Routine or Brosport levels of writing on PW or TS

I'm a bit confused, I find his lyrics on some of the PW songs to be his best ever. Definitely more subdued on Skiffs and Skiffs 2 though.

Extreme agreement. AC seems like a less personal endeavour. Maybe that's a stupid comment but since MPP, his contributions have all been of an ilk, slightly goofy/wonky, still catchy but nothing I really connect to emotionally.

this could be its own thread -- AC songs reimagined in a different era/album.... but Chores would've sounded really sick as a Sung Tong... can hear ST-version Chores in my head so clearly, and it would've been great
SJ Chores is obvs perfect, just a little thought experiment

The only Panda Animal Collective song I've truly loved is Leaf House. I get why people like Chores and while I've never been a fan, that's one of the only Panda songs that doesn't sound like it was something he was trying to write for his solo album (musically anyway - the lyrics are about par for the course).
It also sort of rubbed me the wrong way when he basically just admitted that his 2 contributions to ChZ were unfinished scraps from Tomboy, and that's not a knock at Tomboy, that's by far my favorite Panda solo album, it kind of just gave me the vibes of forgetting to do your homework in middle school and then turning in a project you did the year before you had laying around hoping no one notices lmao.
Thinking about the trajectory of Animal Collective post-Person Pitch, the more I am convinced that album may have been a bad thing for Animal Collective. Could probably write an entire fucking book about SJ and why an album that most everyone agrees is good is so polarizing, but I'm not sure anyone is ready for that yet - not even me.

Don’t know what you’re all talking about. I bloody love New Town Burnout, Bagels, Car Keys etc. Let alone obvious classics like I Think I Can.

I hate to say it but Car Keys is lame. Imagine if he had brought Buoys level songs to the table for Skiffs. Like, imagine Crescendo or Inner Monologue with the full band. I can even hear Deakin harmonizing on I Know I Don’t Know.
I did like some of his PW songs, though. Spilling Guts, Bagels, Goalkeeper. Gnip Gnop is probably my favorite song from that era but I’m not sure who gets credit for that one. Sounds like a Panda song.

Bagels is an Avey song.
I Think I Can is one of Panda's best Animal Collective songs though.

Neither Bagels or Goalkeeper are Panda songs. Spilling Guts is. Gnip Gnop is probably the only song in Animal Collective's discography that I wouldn't bet money on who wrote it, I actually don't know. Gun to my head I'd guess Panda but if I'm wrong it wouldn't shock me.

I think Bagels, Goalkeeper and Gnip Gnop are all Avey.
Don't agree about Car Keys being lame (it cooks live even if they bungled it in the studio) but I do think both of his tunes for Skiffs have surprisingly weak vocal melodies. Can't really speak for TS2 Panda as I've been putting off those songs for years, but have to say I've had the chorus to Broke Zodiac lodged in my head ever since the one time I listened to the Cain's Ballroom boot in 2019 lol.

Fuck yeah. Keep Gnippin'
And yeah, Car Keys is kinda boring, at least the studio version. I do have some bad demoitis for when it was only known as '24' but I may be the only one. hope Broke Zodiac doesn't get the same treatment

New Town Burnout and I Think I Can are sick yeah. Would like him to bring a 5+ minute song to an AC album again.
Gnip Gnop is definitely Avey. Sounds like an Avey song and is named after the chorus
I never really cared for Car Keys live and think it's one of the album's best tracks. Am I alone?

the band specifically confirmed that goalkeeper was avey, and yeah, bagels and gnip gnop are definitely his too. theyve said that both avey and panda each wrote 8 (?) songs originally for PW, so...
Avey:
Floridada, Vertical, Burglars, Bagels, On Delay, Golden Gal, Gnip Gnop, Goalkeeper
Panda:
Hocus Pocus, LiTG, Natural Selection, Spilling Guts, Summing, Recycling, Hounds, Peacemaker
And then Kinda Bonkers came later afaik

pretty easy rule for the PW stuff is that if it has the call-and-response vocal thing ("hocketing") it is a PB song and if it does not it's Avey. zero exceptions

This 100%. Many of his recent contributions have been short n sweet, but would love to see him write more of a centerpiece for an AC album again.

hmmmm yeah I see the argument but it feels to me more like a traditional vocal harmony rather than the bouncing each syllable back and forth
also I think I've been surprised by the ASMR outro to that song literally every single time I've heard it lol

I guess i was just thinking of that opening oh OH oh OH oh OH that isn’t repeated in the rest of the song. I think that’s why people assumed it was a panda track

if we’re talking noah’s best contributions, we have to talk about screens and tantrum barb
also gotta give credit for prester john! i always thought it was really cool that it’s a dave tune and a noah tune stitched together — each part is distinctly theirs, but they cohere so beautifully. i forget, were there any other songs from this era confirmed to be written the same way?

Genies was written the same way! They stitched Noah’s beginning part to the rest of Avey’s song. They’ve talked about it in some interviews after TS

Genies open is the same deal as prestor John, first part is Noah back half is Dave
As far as Noah’s contributions to the band being weak, I don’t think it’s really him holding back. I remember a interview a while back asking about his song writing process for solo vs band and he said he doesn’t differentiate anymore, he plays the boys all his demos and whatever speaks to them is what they’ll work on as far as his songs go. I can’t remember where I saw him talk about that but I know I did

I generally disagree with all of this, since I think i can is one of AC's best, but fuck Sunset should be a fucking Animnal collectice song.Thats one of the greatest songs he's ever written. I hope they play it live full band one day. But i feel like he has concepts for the groups of his songs and doesnt like them crossing over, sans tomboy/centipede hz ofc, but both of those projects are primarily driven by the electric guitar anyways.
