i'm trying to remember did we have a good reason to believe the album was coming sooner, rather than later, in the first place?

I still think we're getting the announcement sooner-- I'm guessing single end of this month.

I wanna say, no publications don't have it. Feel pretty sure about that. If there was a press release or something and links to the album were out for journos, I just think we'd know for sure.
I believe there's just an inside group of pals of the band who've heard the album. You know, like, if Deakin invites you over for dinner maybe he throws it on at the end of the night
Sometimes stuff will go out with an embargo, where it's like "here's all the info and a link to listen, but do not talk about it for three weeks, when we plan to announce it. But this way, when we announce it, you'll be all ready."
So that might be what's going on here... but I'd say the insider theory is probably correct. But it still is entirely possible that journos would have links while being explicitly forbidden from talking about it yet.

talking about it yet.
Yeah, I see this a lot from music journalists I follow online. I saw some posts this morning from a few who have already heard the new Laurel Halo album, which was only announced this morning

If those few freebirders were telling the truth then wouldn't there have to be journalist copies out there?

It could go either way. I think it's worth remembering that we first learned about Time Skiffs because of an anonymous post from someone who had access to the album months before it was announced and definitely was not a journalist

Was Transverse Temporal Gyrus a scam because it came out on vinyl the same time they did the web installation? C'mon dude

I think we should all just prepare for a 2024 release. And there is no way they are going to release another single before the Defeat vinyl drops.
I'm pretty sure that whoever was posting about the album got that info from somebody who was close to the band and not a journalist. As far as I know there has been no indication that this album is going to drop any time soon and it seems like most of the evidence is pointing towards a longer wait.

yes i know for a fact that there are some journalists who have had a copy of TS2 for two months already
that's why i asked how long in advance journalists get copies of an album before it releases.

This is exactly what I was hoping for, thanks. The band said this thing is coming out this year so I still think it's definitely this year. My latest guess is November.

jesus my only point here is that a whole lot of people probably would not buy the defeat single if they knew it was going to be on the album, and so it feels a little questionable for domino to be going about it this way. the TTG thing isn't even a remotely analogous situation c'mon

They were talking about leaving Defeat off the album so fans wouldn't be paying for the same song twice, but George Martin's ghost stepped in and was like "oh no you don't, if you think this is spooky try to imagine how long Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane has been haunting ME"

-- on "Stride Rite" there will be a recording played backwards that loops throughout the song of Deakin saying "l e a k it Deak"
-- to promote the album, AC will appear on a new late night with Conan show and they'll play "Broke Zodiac" and while Panda sings the chorus the closed captions will read "woman vocalizing"

Let’s talk about transitions.
I think Stride will transition into Soul Capturer with a 2 minute ambient interlude featuring Deakin repeatedly elbowing a Romanian grey mountain goat in the ribs in order to make it bleat and the sound of Geo licking his hurdy gurdy.

the natural development of the classic "wet" AC sample...MPP was all about squishing sounds, TS2 will be about licking sounds

Gem & I will have a new coda at the end of it which samples a merry-go-round tune

I hear so much of MPP ambience in studio Defeat. I don’t know how to describe it, though. Light swirling metallic soundscapes? The songs are very different. But I’m optimistic about the ambient sound palette.

My guess is that Domino likes the record and knows it will get good press and reviews and they will want to release it before end-of-year best-of lists so this thing can get as much positive press as possible. Seems like this will be the best AC release in over a decade...

i actually bet you that either "broke zodiac" or "gem and I" will be the next single, now that the dub remixes of Reset are coming out. they feel like Noah's most tropical-sounding songs to date, and i can see them playing those songs as part of their set for the upcoming Panda Bear and Sonic Boom tour.

Almost certainly, there's also a rumor that the next single is short and poppy which I believe only those two would be. My money's on Gem and I

I think the part they are referring starts at 23:40. It is pretty vague though so like they said, might be a bit of a reach.

Yeah this is the part sorry for not doing the time stamp homework originally, I listened in the car and was so excited to post I forgot to take better notes lol
It’s, like I said, a huge reach but that host Steven Hyden is in camp anco and based on his review of time skiffs would, I think, be eager to talk about TS2. It’s crumbs for sure but man I’m fuckin hungry haha

Has Ian Cohen reviewed anything of theirs? Figured Mark and Stuart did all of the heavy lifting at p4k but could be wrong. That being said it doesn’t seem like a huge flight of fancy. A high profile indie act with a release slated for Sep-Nov which hasn’t been announced yet does narrow it down a chunk based on what we know.
Just checked out Stevens TS review, holy mother of dogshit lol. However I didn’t really make out from the word salad that he expressly disliked it, just that he thought it was by the numbers. If Willie is to be believed that TS2 is a big improvement over its predecessor then I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s garnering a bit of hype among the folks who’ve heard it.

i think it's pretty clear that he liked it but just thought it sounded kind of tired and that an animal collective comeback record can't help feeling like a pretty insular event in the boring grand cultural scheme of the 2020s. which i think is like, by far the prevailing assessment of the record right
choosing to believe that they are in fact talking about the AC record in that podcast ep, don't think it's really a bad guess at all

They talk concretely about Big Thief a few minutes later. So prob not them. I know MGMT is sitting on something . . . but are they in a different scene? AC seems like it could fit here.
