oh man, can you share more of what this concert was like? as bummed as you must've been that Dave was sick, i hope you can take some solace in knowing you got a really unique AC show

I think it was like 7 Panda songs and Wide Eyed. Very jammy set with super extended transitions. I didn’t appreciate it at the time because I was in high school and it was my first AC concert. Didn’t appreciate the uniqueness of it. Finally got to see the full band perform on the Skiffs tour so all is well!

looks like montreal was rescheduled to july 3rd on the official ac website. but nothing about toronto on there. so not sure if that makes it seem more or less likely that toronto will be rescheduled

I always wondered why they didn't just roll with it when Dave got sick and do more shows like that. Like why not. I'm sure a lot of fans would be disappointed, but it's way more disappointing to have to reschedule a show altogether imo

I think a lot of the Panda songs they did play weren't rehearsed for that tour, as they probably were never expecting to be playing them. I wasn't at the show thankfully but there are boots of those sick Avey shows and those songs do not sound great.

Probably better to let people down by an unplayed show than to let people down with no solace in a bad show that you do play. I could understand a rescheduled show - would have had a hard time getting over a Panda set when I came to see an Animal Collective show.

Sometimes I feel that everything went downhill after iphones came out (Jun 2007). But then I talk to an old coworker and they remind me that everything has and always will be fucked.
Guess all I can do is try to lessen the damage and have some good times before my turn is over.

Damn! Did not recognize all that happened in 07. Yes, best year of being an AC fan for sure, great memories of blasting those early MPP boots amazed at how beautiful and sweet all those songs were. Also reworked Leaf House, Doggy, and Hey Light were too good.

I feel this year I actually put on Pullhair and liked it. I think all the years of listening to left field beat music kinda made me get into the tone of the album instead of being jaded that all the "songs" were gone. Its no First Unitarian Church boot level, but its still a cool sounding record and has a ghostly charm.

does anyone else really appreciate the interviews they've done with faceculture? feels like when they had their first interviews with him they found it kind of awkward but it seems now he is their go-to for more in depth interviews, and i think he asks questions they don't just get asked everywhere

I think it might be because they are kind of out of the shadow of MPP now so they aren't just getting asked the same kind of questions in every interview, and the people interviewing them are genuinely more interested, also they are maybe being more selective in the interviews they are doing, avey being on that podcast (forget the name) and deakin's recent one

2007 was just a good year for music in general. Looking back, there was just a lot of energy and excitement around the music community that year and a lot of classic records came out between 2006 - 08.

I wasn't alive in the 60's but it feels like kind of similar vibe from what I can tell. Probably has something to do with the rise of the internet or something.

ya 2007 was my golden year for music too -- AC, PB, National, LCDSS, Jens Lekman, Deerhoof, of Montreal, Yeasayer, BMSR, Caribou, Radiohead's best album, Menomena, The Field, Spoon, Burial, etc etc.


I'm also completely addicted to 2007 AC boots right now -- best iterations of all the MPP songs. Gangly and primal AC, songs are cinematic yet on the verge of falling apart. Noah and Dave are as rambunctious as ever, hooting and hollering while in the process of tearing apart their own songs. The songs got a massive glow up in the studio and they turned them into sparkling raindrops of psychedelic electronic pop perfection, but the earliest/best versions of these songs are super ramshackle and spiky, crudely hand-drawn psychedelic stylings. It's a lot easier to draw a line from HCTI to 2007 versions of MPP than what we ended with.

It's perhaps partially the lo-fi nature of the recordings, but MPP could've been very gnarly and primitive and electrifyingly eclectic, the samples bolder and more of a color-clash between drums and synths and vocals... they decided to almost apply a singular filter across the whole album which of course created its own cohesive trip. Again, both add their own dimension, you can love them both for what they are, and I do, but the 07 versions of MPP have this incredible Genius Slapdash charm. though i suppose they were worried it'd be SJII if they did this texture heavy but very dynamic/diverse psych pop thing. to go in the opposite direction and make everything fluid synthetic goop, same set of instrumentation across most of the songs...ya, that's a psychedelic trip of its own. it just comes down to preference and i prefer AC at its more raw and primitive. MPP was always gonna be huge so it makes sense they made it very cinematic sparkle massive lights and booming bass/synths/crystal clear vocals, all enmeshed together seamlessly

I mean, to go from Doggy->Hey Light->WCWAR->In The Flowers to start a show... yowzers!

why didn't they put "From a Beach" on Fall Be Kind? I mean, FBK is already 30 minutes, it's wild they basically put out 2 albums in 2009

FBK is a top tier EP, but with From a Beach that's 100% gotta be called an album, it runs together well enough to hang as an LP...

i think they said they just felt that that track was subpar, they just werent very psyched about it and felt it wasn't as good as the rest of the songs. which i'd disagree with it, comparable in quality to bleed and on a highway imo

I've been listening to MPP a lot lately. I've always had a love/hate relationship with the record and I think I always will. Part of it is the sequencing. I just don't like Also Frightened as the 3rd track. I kind of want something more low key and chilled out after Flowers and My girls. Maybe Graze or WWIS? Or a different track completely. Idk but those thudding bass sounds and the dense AF vocals just isn't it. It's kind of impenetrable and I just want a couple seconds to chill out before getting hit in the face with more sounds after the My Girls peak.

I never really liked the production style either, but it does meet the expectation of MPP being this large, cinematic masterpiece. I guess I'm just not a fan of those kinds of generation-defining albums. I'll take Crooked Rain over Nevermind and Pinata over TPAB any day.

But yea. Imagine these songs with Strawberry Jam style production...

Agreed, studio Brother Sport can't hold a candle to any of the '07 versions, and honestly same with My Girls. The original Avey melody is just so much more powerful and raw. Summertime Clothes and In the Flowers are different enough that they get a pass, though Lux Fragil '08 Flowers kills the studio for me still. Even '09 Lion in a Coma is better than the studio one, lol. That whole era just totally shined when they were on the stage. But yeah '07 is when the magic of those songs was most palpable.

my holy grail AC release is actually a Ballet Slippers like compendium of AC's 2007 tours where we get some good soundboard versions of all those early MPP versions + Hey Light/Doggy/all the sick versions of older songs there were playing

hell yeah, i actually started sketching out a '07-'08 live mpp comp with the album tracklisting in notepad but didn't get far, maybe i'll pick it back up now that i'm in an anco phase again... the reworks could go in between songs or maybe all together as a postscript. but of course it's the soundboards that would bump the idea up to another level, didn't the band say they had them or were they only for '09? ballet slippers has some good shit but far from the best versions of most of the songs...

Merriweather era Chocolate Girl is one of my favorite things the band has ever done. Definitely my favorite version of that song. The 09 9:30 Club boot version just melts me every time.
