They also acted as the producers for every album before Merriweather when they started co-producing with the engineers, so yeah they're definitely capable. And yeah obviously they're capable of doing the recording/mixing all themselves. I guess it can be impractical doing absolutely everything themselves if they are also performing everything too though.

Sorry but there's just no way
Wait for its arrival
My mind's begun to find
Early peculiarities
How it spends its time
doesn't open the record

There'll be lots of empty mailboxes when paper disappears
And people on the subway look so far to be so near
Till people on the screens they touch smile from ear to ear
And me, I talk to spirits but they tell me that's not real
Really hits me

^same, love that part
in general i'm just really loving the idea of the album opening with a song that starts off a bit more mellow and then builds, after chz and pw both starting off with a bang. i'd love something like this:
Cherokee
24
Stride Right
Gem and I
Dragon Slayer
Kings
Defeat
Appreciate
Passerby
Strangers
Prester John
DownDownDownDown
Bolder

Am I crazy for thinking that "Just a frightened mother looking for her daughter" from Defeat is a direct callback to "Their moms are scared 'cause they haven't been home in two or three days" from Safer? Makes the line even more poignant.
I'm honestly obsessed with Defeat, it's shaping up to be one of the most "oof" songs of their career.

you could take it a step further and connect it to april and the phantom "her mother would say 'dad, i don't know where april went'

Oh shit you could! Defeat already feels like a song that ties up their whole discography to me, this takes it even further (even if it's proooobably not intentional)

Ok i like defeat now. Not so much the last 1/3 but theres so much room for studio activities in there! The song feels like part loch raven, part moonjock and part a 3rd song i cant think of the name
Also loving prestor john & shine. Shine reminds me a lil bit of starshine by gorillaz just the way (i think) deakin sings shiiiiiineeee

how the hell are they going to pull off that harpsichord part in Defeat? it sounds so weird and out of place....i really hope they cut it or i dunno--it's not jus the instrument choice, it doesn't feel like that part fits

In the OG defeat that part was my my favorite moment of the song/entire show. But yes now, just weird, like they had something incredibly beautiful and they were like "no, now were are part of the circus core musical movement
Dogma19 , we need to through so wacky sounds it this, it's part of the manifesto"

Listened to Prestor a second time (and many more). It's glorious.
The harmonies are so good on these songs. Panda's bit on Cherokee in particular is really understated. I feel like they're gonna use autotune on the record to really differentiate the vocals. It probably won't be super high in the mix. Not that I'd mind, I've really come around to it, and it really suits Dave's style of singing too.
So a jazzy, medieval psych lounge record. No wonder we can never guess what they're going to go next

But it's also a noir murder mystery taking place at the circus.

just hearing cherokee for the first time. it really does sound like the beginning of a loop that ends with bolder (please let it be the album closer). fucking beautiful music and yes to the medieval psych jazz shit. it makes me so happy that this is the sound they're making. it's like after a decade of fucking around they're finally making a stride forward in their vision and what they can be.

Panda's lyrics have been fucking wacko since homies and a little in PW lol. He's talked in interviews about how he changed his approach to make stuff more about external stuff than internal struggles, and it seems like his external world is really damn weird o_O
I think it's really interesting how he went from using a lot of sayings and cliches back in his old lyrics (to good effect of course). stuff like its so lame that you can take my feelings and make yourself feel better.... super literal and also a literal conversational tone that you might actually speak. Now it's rare if i can figure out what he's talking about in any more than brief glimpses.
There kind of used to be another Lennon/McCartney parallel because a lot of Paul's lyrics were like that too. I always thought the opening verse of Back in the USSR kind of just sounded like a guy telling his SO about his trip in plain language. It's awesome how relateable and friendly and home-y (no pun intended) it feels, along with Panda's conversational lyrics like the previous example. Whereas John would be way more abstract and using visual imagery, similar to Avey. They've both definitely changed over the years though. I get a little frustrated with Panda's lyrics now because I can't find a way for them to be meaningful to my life and feelings, but they are really colorful. I find myself singing Flight so much even though I don't get the words at all.
Damn really spot on, I agree
His new lyrics have interesting cryptic imagery like on token (lol jelly ass)
I think homies is one of my favs of his, both for the sparse production and lyrics meditating on death and existence etc on stuff like on part of the math:
Now we're blacking out
Right then
Turn around
Go on and give it back
You're dead meat
In a chilling freeze
You're an effigy
And a wrapper in a plastic bag
We're all dietys
Washed up in a sewage freebird

as long as this next album even moderately captures the vibe of most of the songs in this recent mini tour it willl .....be my favorite ac lp, already deciding. mpp and sj being perma-tied has gotten old and Cherokee, Prester, Bolder and Strangers are top tier avey and ya defeat is gonna be the most epic song of all time yada yada
here's mmmmmaybe what this lp should look like. I dont actually know tho but if I force myself to draft a tracklist it will GET me thinking about it. and thinking is knowing
1. hmmmmm maybe Cherokee? I almost get a final track from Cherokee, or like a 2nd, 3rd, but none of the tracks are rlly giving me 1st track energy.... Maybe just be bold af and start with Bolder
2. Gem and I, if it's that panda song that sounds like the Police
3. DownDownDown, get all the singer/songwriting ones leading their own during track 1-3
4. Dragon Slayer- Avey eases us into the heavier, darker vibes the lp will offer
5. 24. get some grimey panda action going
6. Stranger- shit's getting epic and darker at the same time
7. Prester John- "oh shit they just did that" kind of moment
8. King- "wtf was that" kind of moment
9. that one sad Deakin song that isn't downdown? (Stride Right)
10. Bolder- This is a freak out moment before the big epic blow out of Defeat, unless this needs to be track 2-5
11. Defeat!! and this album's long as hell! but all the other tracks seem 3-5ish kinda tidy so its cool
I guess its not the worst if they make Defeat like a whole ep or some shit, but I mean clearly it seems like it should be final.
Then make an EP with Magnolia, Tri-Kid, Spider Bit my Lady if you want and any other left overs and this is the sweetest, most Abbey Road meets King Crimson meets Steely Dan eras for them

oh just hearing the harpsichord part in this new Defeat everyone's mentioned. Im actually ok w/ it but that is pretty whacky. I mean its sick. its just probably not as sick as Avey playing that same part on his Roland with those other Music Box musicians playing sick cello parts and shit like in New Orleans.
alllll they gotta do is record the new version for the LP and then also release a DVD of music box + a strait up vinyl recording Music Box Night #2 as a deluxe dvd/lp package, and 2020 will vaguely by top 3 greatest years for this band oat
