Production and instrumentation of “The Musical” (bass guitar especially) makes me wonder if it’s an outtake of sorts from the Time Skiffs batch. “Hey Bog” would’ve fit perfectly alongside “Midnight Special” or “Uncle Donut.”
Good call on The Musical. It might've been a fun jam to hear live with the full band's writing. I don't dislike it but it's definitely a more muted joint here.

Love how different these songs feel while still having the same basic building blocks and being excellent. Might be that hey bog is just the one that stands out from the rest because it harks from the BC times.

Agreed x2, adding the fact the lyrics are so metatextual, similar vein to Disc One

Someone mentioned before that these songs have elements of all avey’s past solo work.
The electronic beats/synths of down there, the effected guitar like slasher flicks, the spaciousness of eucalyptus and songwriting style of cows/birds.
I feel like these songs fit within the down there world the most though. Mountain game too!
Would be cool if in photographs or slow words made it onto this album under a different name, I highly doubt it though but would be cool!

There's another new song from that Conference of Birds tour where Hey Bog was debuted that I haven't seen anyone mention. No official title but it's listed as "standing in line" on the boot, from the Deleware show. It sounds a little less developed than Bog did, pretty much just some lyrics and a sparse guitar melody over a super hazy drone, but it has this super cool and spooky atmosphere. I was at that show and it was definitely one of my favorite parts of the set. Hoping that one ends up on 7s.

Man I love both of these songs. They keep revealing themselves to me, yeah it does sound somewhat similar to stuff from years' past, but would be some of the strongest stuff he's done if they were on past albums. Hey Bog is one of my favorite Avey things in a bit, echoing that it definitely nails that Mothlight-esque sound

Great songs. But what does it mean to "get rusted" and how come Avey started at such a young age?

thought. Many different frames of mind could
have played in the musical. Alone in a field i
wonder how it is explained that a person
comes into the field of making sound and
putting it together.
Jumping in the void thats how it made me
feel. When the mouth would open up and
project the sound thats buzzing. Deep within
my chest is it my heart that makes the song?
When the breath wants to come up and the
note begins i start to feel much better.
And like the tumbling creek something makes
the song go on and they're people that
dissect and they're people who are
indifferent. We've sung out all the ages, our
sadness and our rage. i can hear the
mountains singing and i do believe they could
do that forever.
And some will be like The Tenors and put on
their suits and go on.
It was just wild wail but someone had to make
a map and it could have been a walk or I'm
remembering me dreaming. Whatever is the
case something put me on the trail or i saw it
on a wall, or maybe there's a page that talks
about The Tenors. Then you're in a group or
you're solo on the stage. Is your audience
the trees or do you crave to be a
professional? One thing I'd like to know is
does it always feel the same to be in the
grass and singing or to put on suits and be
just like The Tenors.
And some will be just like the tenors. And put
on their suits and go on.
Do you know how it feels and not what it
means? (this song)
Have you ever felt a thing and known thats
how you felt about it all along?
If someone told you that you would see an
image in a bog well you would think twice.
But why can't you just trust it?
People somewhere they pick their prices. Did
i pick mine? Its not much of a price its really
just a feeling. Sing.
Hey bog, whatcha showing?
just a little piece on thee you'll find it kind of
revealing
but i don't want to know.
I was 5 when i got rusty.
Hey bog, let me sink in
to the me i think i mean
little bits of everything are all that i know
I was 5 when i got rusty
14 when i first trusted (lost it)
been dreaming for a century
getting too far from gnomes.
Is it gonna be alright
when we get back home?
A drummer can fall apart
on any given night
there might even be a law
the clapping of the hands
Look at me once again
do i look different now?
escape into the moss
at the edge of town
everything had a frost
when the sun went down
a candle lit up the room
the shadow of your hands
beckoning i should stay
but i drifted off
slept with the big red moon
behind your curtain cloud
off to another day
i hope the earth gets rest
traveling after dawn
the changing of the land at light
How accurate are these?
I'm hearing "been dreaming for a century, I can't be far from dawn"

Yeah “Hey Bog” sounds like Cows sounded in my imagination before we got the first taste. We got something wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with Cows. Something oozed from a, ahem, pond. “Bog” is the mountain lake where you can still see the bottom a hundred yards out. Little fishies nibbling your toes.

Cows is a rare album that transports me to a beautiful and totally place every time I listen. The first time I heard Saturdays was magic. The fuzz works for me. I like these two new ones a lot (The Musical especially). But it’s gonna be tough for 7s to match the insta-nostalgia Cows gives me. That said, it’s also true that AC growers are sometimes the long term gems. So who knows.
Anyway, sounds like I’m in the distinct minority in the pro-Cows crowd

Man yeah these are growing reeeeeeeal good on me after initial good first listens...
I think this is my favorite solo production from him ever? his solo music often leans towards sparseness to me, so I love that these are so dense and kind of hallucinogenic. I mean Hey Bog sounds like Burials recent single Chemz almost... and I love when Avey gives Burial vibes (parts of DT basically and now this...)
Incredible guitar solo in Musical, incredible backing vocals... great synths, great bass and guitar, I mean he's got the whole kitchen sink out moreso than typical solo Avey and I love it. Mix sounds a lil crowded and dense, yet soft and psych. Very environmental. Like DT without nearly as much negative space and more slightly traditional instrumental parts a la Slasher/Cows. We'll have to see if the folksy Eucalyptus vibes make an appearance.Yum yum yum, I love it

only listened once to each and gonna hold off on more until the full album is out but I was struck by all the little sonic details in the mix, especially in the last minute or so of The Musical. production sounds way more interesting than studio Cows did to me

Yeah the kitchen sink-ness of it is so nice and lush after the pretty straightforward, un-embellished Cows approach.

the intro reminds me of one of the 2004 bbc recordings of kids on holiday that uses banshee beat as a intro? like the banshee beat part of it with the synth, and how hazey it feels.

The Musical is more catchy in general maybe but Hey Bog has been stuck in my head incessantly. It's sneakily very catchy. Also I must say the bass is exquisite

Wholeheartedly agree with this, Im very excited about these songs. Wouldn't mind some Euc vibes. I just noticed the guitar solo in The Musical. Idk how I overlooked it, it's so obvious...

That part in The Musical also didn't register as a guitar solo for me until a couple listens, just felt like a vague synth part. Now I love it, feels like the perfect way to have a guitar solo in an Avey song.

going way back i've always found that official lyrics provided the band, specifically avey-led songs, don't align with the final product perfectly, they're usually 99% accurate. avey lyrics always seem more fluid than panda's, he is far more likely to re-write them and there is more variation between each live show, even from night to night. idk the exact reason - whether there are a bunch of different takes, if he writes the liner notes lyrics from memory, transcribes them prior to the final product, etc. but it often doesn't reflect the final product exactly. but i feel like that doesn't make the official lyrics any less official i guess

Whoa I'm loving these. Sounds especially great on my big stereo speakers.
Kind of feel like they are a "mirror world" to the environment of Down There. Bright, airy, expansive, with a sort of upward movement to them.
Gonna wait for the album before listening again.... if i can O__O
