Just to clarify, everyone talking about "old" Cherokee being better is referring to the Meow Wolf recording right? Still haven't listened to it

Yeah, I believe that or the Henry Miller one. It's great but I do love the new one, definitely 'hypnotic' and captures a different sort of feeling than the old one, which is great too but certainly is a bit more of a 'banger'.

Cherokee and We Go Back do have the newest kinda energy and vibe out of all the new ones. Very unique... def feel post-PWish in a way but also totally incorporating non-PW things... kinda taking the manic weird pop energy of PW but sprinkling in more Feels/SJ/Chz style instrumentation and also something else totally new/weird. love em.. who'm I kidding I love ALL of them. ('cept Walker. That one's just... there, as a cool-down track I guess)

I actually have not listened to the 2019 boots of Cherokee all that much, but the climax with Avey screaming "IF YOU CAN DO LOVE YOU HEAR ME" still gets stuck in my head when I think about the song just from the one performance I saw live at Desert Daze. and that part sounds totally different in the new version, way more subdued. regardless of the cool stuff developed in the other parts of the song, I'll definitely miss the intensity of that part of the 2019 versions

a little confused by this sudden new wave of hate for the new cherokee, we've known that this is how it sounds for two whole months now. why would the rehearsal for the tour sound any different from, yknow, the tour?

Cherokee is more a track like Visiting Friends now than the punchy single I once thought. It's a pretty jarring shift but I'll definitely grow to like it a lot more than the 2019 version.

not really getting the hate, but opinions are opinions. I just don't really get it because the core of what made the song so good in the first place is still entirely there; the infectious rhythm, the catchy jazzy melody, the interesting dynamic between the verses and the climax... it's all still there. It's a little vibier now I guess, but why does that have to ruin it? every time I go back and listen to 2019 cherokee now it just feels empty

I'd say the verse is definitely better than ever.
And yeah I mean... I'm committed to being okay with the new version honestly. We can work through this. For all we know it
is objectively better now, and some just can't hear it yet (peel slowly and see)

I definitely still understand the demoitis at least. when I heard the new cherokee in person in asheville it felt pretty wrong. but since then that feeling hasn't lasted. hoping other people will come around

The new Cherokee sounds a lot jammier
Just listened to the Meow Wolf recording and a lot of the songs have more... mystique? They almost sound more straightforward and boppy than weirdly atmospherically boppy
I'm just praying to god that studio Passerby keeps the crazy Autotune Nirvana outro

wait no ya I like it just the same/better now. With Avey doing the weird slightly different vocal melody/vocal effect it just puts more emphasis on how gorgeous Deak's keyboarding is during that part.

Cherokee is a xmas song. sorry not sorry
Deakin basically has the main melody in the climax now. and the melody that is played on what I assume to be his keyboard is one of the most comforting, pretty thang I ever heard. this album's gonna fuggin rip
and the transition b/w Cherokee and Genie's is kind of incredible. Love the Beatles 'Flying' energy in the beginning of Genie's damn. I'm the goddamn Walrus ykno
So are gonna like have an alternate version of Skiffs/Skiffs 2 where we just stitch together these 4 recordings? That will be an incredible live-in-studio album

Hadn't really connected at all with Cherokee until I put hunks' "Burl-o-ween" rip on my iPod Mini and walked out into the country. Still doesn't move me much, but it's growing on me. (There's hope for it—I couldn't stomach Bolder either until its reincarnation as We Go Back, which I freakin' adore now, its American Football-esque title included.)

Miss having the Deak narrations this week, Solid stuff though, have a feeling I’m going to be listening to these broadcasts for a long time. Kind of like the BBC radio broadcasts from 04 I’ve been going back to for years and years.
Love Genies more than ever. Something on the Road is interesting, sounds like something that could of been on Danse despite deakin not being on that record, also kind of reminds me of the more experimental stuff the lips were putting out back in 2011 when there were releasing monthly EPs.
Once again thanks for recording or I’d be missing these completely!

I know not to take this too literally but why can't it just be how you feel about it? I can look for reasons why it's better in comparison, more fleshed out keyboards or it leans more into a noir vibe, but that's just spot the difference. They don't make it better necessarily, they're observations.
It's quite like saying the explosion from In The Flowers is better without the drums because you can really hear the cricket noises or Taste is better on the album because the drums have a stop-start rhythm. That's not an emotional response, that's an observation. I don't have to like the new version more. It's not as enjoyable or moving or exciting or emotive as it was. That's not 'hate'.
The SB quote is actually quite appropriate because every song he worked on for those albums moved further away from the original emotion and energy and smothered them with addition.

totally get what you're saying stan. I think dio's point is that it's possible to make a conscious effort to let go of whatever grievances you might have over what's changed from an old version, in order to not sour the joy of the new record

That's a good way to look at it, well expressed. I will definitely take the recording on its own terms rather than playing the inverted version of spot the difference, ie. 'it's not the same therefore it's worse', which is close-minded and can only end one way. Despite whatever reservations I've felt about a few changes to individual songs, I'm really looking forward to the album as a whole and I've loved these rehearsal recordings.

The Desert Daze one is great also! Thats the one I originally saw live. I'm still trying to sift out what I think about the new one. Obviously the original has a special place in my heart because I saw it live (and pretty fucking high) as the last thing before the pandemic hit. So that period of time is special. Although, instrumentally, the new version exceeds so much more. But in terms of vocal delivery, I liked the high parts in the chorus a lot more. The chorus sounds a bit flat in the new versions. However, the ending build up part sounds better to me and I don't get why people think that part is lacking. I'm excited to see how the recorded version sounds. They all seem to be pretty excited by this record, so I trust it will amaze!

I do miss the "theres turkeys out the window, jesus on a plate" lyric. Just loved the way he said it. Also, I miss how sexy Avey sang We go Back when it was boulder.... He did that sexy vocal affectation in the original, just kinda felt sexy towards them in a way I never had...

Oh no, does he not sing this anymore? I think my mind still filled it in. I loved those lines
"Someone is tom hanks" is a fantastic line though. such a classic aveyism to turn "someone's giving thanks" into "someone is tom hanks"
I revisited the Tulsa boot from 2019 last night and the energy of that cherokee sounds so frantic now, in comparison with the new laid back tempo. its a totally different vibe - i prefer the manic climax but im also into the more vibey new one. i still cant get over his new robot voice though. just sounds fuckin weird

I'm hoping that they release more soundboard concerts from the tour like they did for Painting With. And perhaps they get some more out as well from the archives they have. And somebody does a Time Skwiffs (a la RePainting With).
Call me old fashioned but I'd rather have a good sound recording than YouTube videos.
And, of course, thank you, hunks.
