I love Painting With too! I love the production and sounds on that one so much and think it's super underrated. It still sounds really fresh to me. One thing I wish is if it had a few ambient longer tracks in there to make it a bit more dynamic but totally get what they were going for with it.

Sometimes I think about how Avey mentioned that Gandalf - Gandalf album on an AmA one time and it just warms my heart to know he knows that gem of an album.

Yeah I love Painting With too. Recycling or Bagels in Kiev are the only ones that I don't really care for, but Vertical, The Burglars, Golden Gal, Floridada, Spilling Guts- JAMS!

interesting note from that interview is also how Avey said they didn't know if they'd do a whole Sung Tongs tour, but when it felt so good playing it at the Pitchfork show they decided to do a 3 month tour

Not really, I wouldn't mention it at all and just say thank you all the other music he's done which I love.

I also love Painting With a lot. It hits a lot of my musical sensibilities. The negative/lukewarm reaction to it sort of surprises me still, but at the same time I understand that it's pretty different compared to other types of music that they make. If you got into the band for the ambient ethereal stuff I can see why that album doesn't land.
When Floridada came out I was hesitant about the song, but I also wasn't really a fan of Little Fang which was the single at the time (

) but liked Slasher Flicks on the whole so I was still excited about the AC album. Then after the album was out, Floridada clicked for me for whatever reason and I was like

I think it sounds f***ing amazing. Like seriously one of their best-produced albums. The songs are good but they were improved upon vastly on the tours.

Just had a realization
The style of piano playing from New Orleans that Deakin seems very influenced by is called stride piano. Duh. Stride Rite.

Painting With was the first non-MPP AC album that landed for me. Then everything fell into place over the next couple years.
But, yeah, I'm with you on the album needing a little slow down break somewhere in the back half - it's unrelenting.

Yeah, I think the album mostly needs some sort of spacy track after Burglars. I start checking out around when Natural Selection starts. And to me, a lot of the songs seem interchangeable, like Natural Selection/Spilling Guts/Summing, I don't really feel like they're unique enough to take up so much space on PW. And Golden Gal and Recycling has to be one of the hokiest and boring endings they've ever done. A lot feels like B-sides or throwaways. The run of the first 5 songs is pretty great, though

how about some other interesting creative outcomes originating in a mistake? i'm a sucker for the version of People at Lobot Gallery where they (Deakin?) just decide to go with a version of the riff with everything but the root up a fret and it's super menacing:

e: or maybe guitar is just badly mistuned? long tuning break right after

Yeah, those early boots man! Those pre-Feels shows were super jagged, raw, and intense. Daffy Duck in 2004 was a beast.

Avey just reposted a clip on instagram of a video of him+noah playing winters love at Smallfish in London, May 2003 - correct me if im wrong but i dont think this video has ever been publicly shared?? New sung tongs era footage dropped?

I messaged the IG page that posted the clip and they responded with this
“No. None of it is up anywhere yet.
They were sat on DV tape until recently and I just need to work out what to do with it all. It's a lot of stuff to go through. I was quite often drunk or stoned whilst filming so some of the footage is quite
'creative'
But some of it is pretty sweet.“
Lol

lol the timestamps on the files looks like they were digitized 2018 (related to 15th anniversary maybe?) so not super recent. but that's great that they know people are interested!!
my guesses at the files shown, new recordings in bold:
2003-05-01: Open Circuit, Hasselt, BE
2003-05-??: Rough Trade, Brighton, UK (they may have also played in october, but I think these Brighton shows are likely grouped together)
2003-05-??: Smallfish Records, Attenborough Centre, Brighton, UK
2003-05-10: Gardner Arts Centre, Brighton, UK
2003-05-25: Tonic, New York, NY, USA (this could be the 2002 tonic show but maybe unlikely)
2003-10-21: The Old Market, Brighton, UK
2004-08-26: LoBot Gallery, San Francisco, CA, USA
2004-08-27 The Echo, Los Angeles, CA, USA
there are two files named "Vashti Bunyan" visible but i'm not sure what those could be...surely they never played a concert together?
plus maybe a segment of a scandinavian MTV show "this is our music" aired in march 2004, "chicago" episode here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYzdyJrAhEA (AC's was "new york", see synopsis

They posted another video that shows panda playing the drums and vashti is sitting there listening. Looks to me like it’s some behind the scenes footage of the recording session or something

Behind the scenes of recording music is my favorite stuff. I hope they release some of it but I doubt they would in a coherent method (thinking about the strawberry jam footage)

oh cool! yeah i see the vid now, no IG account so having to use
https://instastories.net/story/130701music. what is that panda CD? is that second track "berserker" ?? is the last title "my own dive" (or "my own / dive") ????

wowww this is all really cool!
CD looks like a proto- homebase demo kinda thing. My guess is "my own"= bros?? "I'm not tryna forget you / just like to be on my own"
and dive presumably being I remember... we don't have any recordings of pb doing that one solo, right?
hope one day we get a demos collection or straight up archival live album from noah. AC has got to start dipping into that territory at some point surely. too much good stuff not to release.

timing is not so far off for IRLHtD but that is blowing my mind to think about a sung tongs / person pitch connective tissue. but i guess the ZDB show is only five or six weeks after Other Music... maybe there was a time where the relationship between AC and panda solo material wasn't as clear cut?
