tho fortunately the best version of covered in frogs was also recorded in quite high quality on that bbc radio show (along with sleeping factory) so i feel pretty blessed abt it. to me that whole performance is like the second great ac ep of 2004. and you don't even have to pretend it sounds better than it actually does like we do with most boots hehe, you can play that one around your friends and they'll be like "oh this is really nice what is this"

lol i just wanted to drop a hot take about something old instead of reading arguments about 7S or Skiffs and the decline of AC or wh/e. covered in frogs isn't so bad but i don't think it would have added anything to Sung Tongs. i wonder if they had to consciously be aware of how many animal references they were making?
sleeper factory is good but especially works in that hybrid campfire songs / sung tongs style with doggy. happy singing band is a true stinker though

totally agree about covered in frogs and sleeper factory, both are great as live tunes tho. But i really disagree about happy singing band / the untitled song after it… that song makes me feel a certain way
I was reflecting just yesterday on how perfect sung tongs is though. I love the pacing, i love the song choices, just spectacular. As much as i love prospect hummer, I’ve always daydreamed about hearing a studio version of Its You with noah singing lead, like that one amazing recording from the UK in 2003

yeah i wonder if it's useful to consider those songs as "etudes" from that era, building a technique without worrying about the songwriting? same as those crack box acoustic duos

That's a great way to think about them. with the exception of sleeper factory, i think they were mostly noah's songs too, which makes sense with how he was writing songs for young prayer. they were definitely playing with form a lot in those days, im thinking too about stuff like Iko Ovo, lots of "meditations" rather than songs
Speaking of form, something that I've always enjoyed thinking about is how many of the noisier, stranger songs from the danse / hollinndagain days are so similar in form to campfire songs, just with different instrumentation. Jimmy raven / the living toys could have easily been on campfire songs if they were all playing acoustic guitars. It's fascinating to notice how noah's drumming mirrors the sonic role of the wind and other incidental noise on campfire songs, or how it bleeds into and through the static / frog sounds on danse. Blurring lots of lines between organic and "man made" sounds, and doing the same with song form, with sections changing with the breeze
Just rambling but ive always enjoyed thinking about this

I've always wished we could have heard an acoustic rendition of meet the light child too. the middle section that gets so quiet is very similar to parts of moo rah rah rain

Posting this here because he doesn't really talk about 7s at all, great interview with Avey:
https://last-donut-of-the-night.ghost.i ... newsletter
Lots of stuff covered including AC's legacy, playing live, and Avey's cats.

Great interview, there's a bit near the end where he's hinting that AC might be ditching the pop-ier song writing and get back to a more experimental style. I'm super excited for that!

I'm enjoying the hypothetical next setup of
avey - doing just weird vocal stuff/songs (gator pools style) and noisy things (jangling chimes, distorted kalimba a la neurons?). maybe even mpp style dual wielding drumstick and mic
deak - swirling mystical piano
panda - bringing his rootsy leaning guitar stylings with a twist.
geo - gurdy, modular electronic rhythms applied to stretched psych folk tunes, other
with a songwriting approach more like the stuff on Ark

I don't think he does but I'd recommend his newsletter. Larry is like one of the few active music writers I trust on AC stuff.

Wonder when sinister grift will come out, given the relation in time to current releases. Feels like that one has also been in a bit of limbo like TS2

I'd guess immediately after Skiffs 2 is mostly done. They've kept up a good pace since Skiffs on Domino releases, Reset announced and released quickly like a month after the US tour for skiffs wrapped

new avey interview with a ton of random info
https://spinitron.com/WOWD/pl/17144183/ ... d-schedule
The musical used to be super chaotic and rambunctious, a lot faster with tons of drum samples from his drummer friend
PJ from eucalyptus was a very emotional and hard song to sing and he was either crying or close to tears while recording it
He doesn’t see himself seeing untitled #1 live
They considered completely remixing spirit but Avey thought that it would change the record too much
Noah was the most disappointed with people’s reaction to PW
He's working on the new AC album artwork rn as we speak

Cool stuff! Can anyone rip that radio interview? The website player is terrible and I'd love to be able to scrub through.
Geologist is featured in this Reverb article about modular synths. Cool bit for those interested in gear and mentions of a new Geologist/Unnamed guitar friend record.

His drummer friend is Alex Farrar who also works at Drop of Sun. He also mixed and mastered my EP "The Man Behind The Clouds" during the pandemic.

I think there are three or four great tracks on there, but a lot of it feels underwritten and overproduced. The record definitely stings less now they’re back to making music I like a lot. An interesting experiment and worth it for the live versions. I’m not holding it against the boys, they are allowed one slip up.

burglars is top tier AC, some other decent stuff on there as well but yeah def amongst my least favorite albums of theirs just because of how much i like all of the rest of em. hounds of bairro is another great highlight of that era. when i do listen to painting with, the bridge of on delay with the piano always makes me think 'i wish the whole album was this good'

Yeah, that's the only moment on the album which touches great Animal Collective. There's some good bits elsewhere but most of it sounds like plastic.

Whole album for me has the Grateful Dead effect. The recorded versions don’t do the songs justice it was made for the stage cause live that era is top tier

i'm a bit more pilled on pw but i still only really go for 4 or 5 of the studio versions, something like LITG or summing i need a live version to get me into it
i just think they fired a whole entire cartridge into their foot with the modular synth + royalty free sample creative limitations. "limited" is just a good word to describe that record overall

reminder it’s not an AC album. And as a Painters release it’s much better than the EP at least
