Can't link cause I'm on mobile but Keep's Instagram posted a pic of a geologist shark with an implication that they were workin on somethin with ac. Maybe new shoe designs? They did just restock some of panda's shoes so it's not impossible they're still collabin

today I listened to animal crack box and for the first time it clicked. made me go "wooah"

I always appreciated that old songs that never made it to a studio were available, but today for the first time I was really into it, loving the freakier moments like the punkin songs and Oh Sweet, and also enjoying the quieter guitar tracks like Jungle heart. In the past I never gave it the time or the attention.
What a great release.

Presumably you've listened to their boots too? The Sung Tongs era stuff features a good six or seven songs which never made it to the studio, and in much better quality than Crack Box. Check out Other Music and the Brighton show, as well as the BBC Sleeper Factory with Doggy.

i feel like the my longest phase as an AC fan was the bootleg love phase, they have so many unique performances and versions of tracks; 2009 Chocolate Girl, early Tikwid, Happy Singing Band, Noah's Ark/Together, fast Reverend Green, the insane version of Feels that you can hear on those 2004 boots, of course the trio of 2007 has at least 3 or 4 recordings that are as good as MPP in my opinion

so yeah they've made a lot of songs I love, but a lot, more then I originally thought, are the live versions. I don't know if they have a reputation as a 'great' live band, but they should at least get recognition for the amount of original material they dedicated solely to their live shows

Totally on board. I also agree that they don't really have a great reputation live because, until the post-CHz tour, they never really 'played the hits'. I think this last tour was the most professional and refined they've done, but it also wasn't particularly interesting to me, even though I thought they put on an awesome show.

There's something about developing the songs and playing them fresh which seems to inspire more emotional performances. I suppose it's obvious but that's the real joy of Animal Collective for me, their ability to express something live. I was listening to the BBC Taste today and it just blew me away, as it does most often, yet I could easily never hear the album version again. Anyway, I'm going to start waffling but yeah, I agree.

You're seriously out of your mind. Not a great reputation live? They sold out shows for years, headlined festivals, and went on world tours. Sounds like your standard for having a good reputation is the same as being a legacy act. How about impressing your peers and heroes?

Of course! I think ACB took longer to click for me because it spans so many eras. When sifting through boots you can spend hours in sung tongs era then move on as you please but with ACB you go through danse, hollinn, campfire, hcti, sung tongs all at once and it's a bit disorienting. I guess I was just in the right headspace this time around

I don't know if this was addressed to me but I've already said that their best music is performed live. It depends how you interpret reputation. With people who are massively into them? No doubt. Otherwise, I've heard and read extremely variable opinions over the last eight or nine years.

All new material and reluctance to dip into the back catalogue, as well as differing set up and sound from one tour to the next is not conducive to a snowball of new fans. That said, I couldn't give two hoots about those people!

Very mixed reputation among the scum, for the reasons noted. Look at comments on House on YT, when it blows My Girls out of the water on every level. Beyond debate. Subhuman scum.

Esoterically appreciated reputation among superfans, who are nevertheless aware of their relative live impenetrability - no hits, WIP, changing dynamic.

"House" live ≈ "My Girls" studio > "My Girls" live

like the piano arpeggio just works better for me with the minimal live sound, the synth sounds thin without all the studio production

Wait, Victor, we actually did think that sorta at first here. Though not after the official announcement, if that's what you were confused about.

At first the mysterious website was posted with that weird video that had the Billy Bass. It said Merriweather Post Pavilion and January. And that's it. I think we dismissed the idea of a show pretty early on since it wouldn't make sense to have a show in the dead of winter outdoors. But boy was it an exciting album roll out.

i still think "reputation" is different than "response" ? idk if ac has the "great live band" reputation among like phish fans, perennial festivalgoers, or any other group of people who would necessarily have a sense of what a great live band is.

love how there are like three or four sides to this debate but we're all saying the same thing, "love the boots man"

I don't know. I feel like CHz, Slasher Flicks, and Grim Reaper belong to a different era from ODDSAC, Down There, Tomboy, and TTG. It's more like riding a Ferris wheel at a dark carnival with a hangover from eating 7.4 burritos.
