Yeah you really couldn't do the same treatment with SJ especially bc a third of the album was never performed before release. FRG is arguably the most they improved a song from conception to recording
it's interesting to think about this kind of thing, makes the SJ songs feel a lot more rigid and structured than the albums surrounding it which i hadn't thought much about before, kind of a precursor to the CHZ era tours but with better songs. i've come to see SJ as a big turning point for them so I think the more structured approach makes sense as they were experimenting with new instruments and essentially a new way of making music. i don't think anyone would ever call them a cautious band but to me that feels like a way to describe or account for the lack of really big changes from pre-album to album. just more focus on things being in the right place and keeping things in order than being a complete energy blow out kind of thing. pre MPP tour feels to me like they were able to bridge both of those things together.

speaking of feels shows i'm watching starlight ballroom right now, not sure when i've sat down and done that. can anyone pin down the "but it did [work out]" period of banshee beat? i am not completely not interested in prying into anyone's personal life but i assume this is when avey + kria were together? i also feel like i've heard this in versions from the last 5 years too but i'm not sure
e: damn this has got the BBC Good Lovin Outside too??

I feel like at least once a year I hit a week or several weeks where I suddenly "rediscover" how good What Would I Want? Sky is and it becomes the only thing I want to listen to. I'm in that zone hard rn. Like it leaves me speechless almost every time, how the fuck did they do that? Maybe my favorite studio recording of the entire MPP era.

Spectacular song, so unusual in many respects but a perfect encapsulation of where they were for a while, when it felt anything was possible.

I like that they sampled one of the only Dead songs that almost never got played live. Adds an air of mystery to it

the part after the sample loop is introduced where they just turn the volume on it down over a couple seconds to make room for Avey's vocal is truly one of the strangest "breaking the rules" moments in any pop music i've ever heard lol, such a great song

why aren’t there more songs like Daffy Duck? AC should make more songs that sound like Daffy Duck

love when they used to open with daffy duck. totally works on the latter half of the album but it works so well as a live opener. reminds me of what someone was saying ab defeat in the defeat thread. that song feels like the first time they've really slowed it down like that since feels. i mean solo projects aside after feels they kinda ran with the high energy stuff from sj onward which. been awhile since we've gotten an album with such a dragged out piece.

2007 AC Bootlegs are GOATed. And when I say GOAT I mean it. Nothing touches it.

i've just been getting into the 2004 boots lately, i don't know if i ever gave them a huge listen at the time since they seemed pretty similar to 2005 but i LOVE the fast people

I love that live era. So many of the songs sound like they are falling apart, in the most badass way possible.

Damn that latest Psycho Actives RULES. That and Bridge to Quiet and of course Live at music box village really are their most interesting releases of the last half decade for me. No one else quite does it like em. Would LOVE to see them commit to a more freeform sound like this on a proper LP again some time. Who knows...

I've been hammering the official Music Box release recently and I totally agree. That's primo AC for me, like if the Glasslands show had a more varied setlist.

Does anyone know if there's a reason the Jane Berserker art features the grateful dead steal your face logo?

Really great John Cale piece from this past weekend with some bits from Geo. Almost unbelievable to me that there is a 0-degree connection from AC to VU.

Following up my last post here with the John Cale/AC track now that the album is out. Pretty cool! Still listening through the album and am not sure if it's a favorite or not yet but I like it. Wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to hear Panda vocals first. Rest of the record is worth checking out too, gorgeous opening track with Laurel Halo.

that John Cale album is a beast, definitely a unique and cohesive sound despite all the different features. the song with AC is cool, neat to hear their vocals on it, but is definitely more in Cale's world than AC's
