I'm musing here on the movement of
soul as it might be understood and articulated by Jungian analyst Wolfgang Giegerich (who is himself inspired by Hegelian thought) within, across, and existing as Animal Collective's discography. Suffice to say I won't be able to deeply exfoliate my thoughts here in this format. Briefly put, however, for someone like Giegerich the notion of soul is an objective structure of consciousness that expresses aspects of itself through the interiority of the psychological image, or the felt-sense of the way in which an something is afforded by perception in the medium of imagination. Giegerich, and by some extension, C.G. Jung, use the general process of alchemy (e.g., calcination, dissolution, separation, etc.) to describe the
historical movements of the soul's interior logic, and in this way the soul
thinks itself as the life of history with definable moments of its truth provided by its analysis. This discipline of performing the interiority of soul may be undertaken in the analysis of any such phenomena of history, whether a personal symptom or a dream or a body of work (i.e., art). In keeping in line with this method of thought, I'm proposing that Animal Collective's discography allegorizes in rich detail the soul's logical life wherein the
unus mundus of the soul––which imagines a preobjective unity of Nature and Man (terms in themselves warrant much discussion)––is in the alchemical process of leaving its home (sublating is likely the better term) by separating from itself and dialectically rejoining. The 'animal' (or Nature, or the Spirit which has "gone, [...] vanished") sublates in the progression of their body of work into Man. Whereas the soul of Animal Collective's sound was once played by the darkness of Nature, the logic of the soul now seems to have interiorized the alterity of Nature into the light of itself, yielding Man who 'plays' this Nature as the status of its consciousness. We could think this through by analyzing the aesthetic of albums over times, in addition to the imaginal aspects of the titles and lyrics of their works.
I'm really rushing big ideas here. Perhaps I'll attempt to think them through more deeply at another time. In short, Animal Collective's music can be appreciated and made sense of through the soul's logical life performing as their discography, which in itself describes an alchemical movement. The animating elements of their music that used to situate their sound have now seemingly been integrated into the performers who in turn perform that animation, and as such are no longer animated by it.

Thank you lhtd, really thoughtful + thorough response. I'm not well-read in the philosophical realm (and as such cannot contribute much) but I follow everything you're saying. Wonderful analysis.
Having spent so much time immersed in the band's music, it's so good to consider their body of work and see it as a reflection of their lives over time.

Oh no oh no oh god no this will not do at all….. you want to see a Hegels spirit in this discography? I can’t think of anything further from the mark!
Oh heavens above save us from this cold cruelty
As we all know the cool objective of Hegel and his strict German idealism lead directly to authoritarianism, to singular thought and the fascism of 20C:…. I see nothing at all in this emotionally bankrupt systemisation of thought here at all!!! To what end point do you really think AC are heading?? Some purity of being?? Some ideal humanity of their own forceful design??
Retire a little and consider the vast oceans, cities, jungles and lie in the grassy fields of the endlessly creative, evolving, wandering, blossoming, blooming, expanding, erupting, conjoining, becoming, nomadic minstrelisms of this merry collective! The endless, beginningless, always middleness of the organic rhizome of natural intensity. Let’s get a bit schizo to the Deleuze & Guattari beat!!
Indeed a multiplicity even by their own name, the animal collective, of one or several wolves they roam the plateaus my fiendish friend!
The discography has been the ever evolving, disruptive and seeking journey of real new territories, from style to style to style, ceaseless and without end, branching and reaching and finding
Now stop listening to to the authoritarian tone of these so called new-Hegelians and realise that you are already sucking at the bosom of the sweet collective organless body, of the wonderful collective of animals

While I'm appreciative of the playfulness of your post, I stopped seriously considering what you have to say at this paragraph. You've projected the fantasy of "the -
isms" onto Hegel (poor Hegel) and chose to comment on Jung and Giegerich, of whom you demonstrate to know nothing about, by not actually commenting (thinking!) on their thought––their psychologies, as they are––and instead attributing the sin of "Neo-Hegelians" upon them. As if Delueze has understood and settled Hegel once and for all...

lolol jfw7. I understand being unmoved by a conversation that doesn't fit one's interests but "boring" is the antithesis of what this recent discussion is. This forum can incessantly chat about tiny subjective experiences to music, band speculation, and news sharing; why can't there be room for psychological and philosophical discussions of Animal Collective's music? If it bores you then write about something of interest to you.

I'll talk some Kant but I draw the line at Hegel. Too many words going on... 19th century transcendentals are more my speed from then...
I think it all peaked with Des Cartes anyway
On the topic of AC though, I know we aren't supposed to care about pitchfork, but fuck yeah. Three from the 'verse in the top 100 tracks and Royal and Desire is a real nice surprise....

also i should follow up that sincerity with an apology to LHTD, i shouldn't have dismissed your posts that way. but i think intense philosophical discourse is kinda the opposite of "general discussion" and parts of it felt weirdly combative (although that might be part of the debate style or whatever). you should absolutely make a thread to get better attention to those ideas and i will read every post anyway because i can't handle any threads going unread

Hey, no harm done. Some of the combativeness you're sensing might be on par with some kind of classic philosophical shit-alogue, the other aspect is just me perturbed by unjustified accusations. Same thing as when I witness non-fans of Animal Collective blatantly belabor bad faith opinions on their music. I think you're right about the 'general discussion' aspect. Too often do threads bulk up with crosstalk that can diminish engaged conversation. I also share the 'left unread' anxiety... CA is fertile ground for my neuroses.

magicians kinda reminds me of the more "free-form" (lol) anco stuff. not just cause its got that slow build but that hook melody just feels so much like classic anco to me. i think the fact that their songs are currently a bit more structured doesntr necesarily mean that its gonna be like that forever. as someone who makes music myself i find myself going back and forth between more free flowing less structured stuff and more like trad structure. in due time i'll sure we'll get some stuff thats at least somewhat reminiscent of that woman vocalizing man speaking backwards shit. i think the structure of this current era just works for the atmosphere that it has. also guys... defeat? thats song is like the epitome of anco lacking structure and whatnot. the lush bittersweetness is so feels.

Defeat is slow and loose but it does not lack structure at all, it's 3 distinct sections each of which are a set of repeating verses

Since Sarah Louise is the first name listed, I would imagine the band is her songs and not Avey's. I believe she has opened for him before and he posted about her
2021 album when it was released. "gator pools" does sound like a very Avey name though so hopefully I'm wrong.
The show is a listening party for a local music compilation and "gator pools" have a song on it. So at the very least we should get to hear the song on the comp eventually
edit - looks like Ryan Oslance is really into gators (instagram is @alligayytor). also show is on the 16th, not 18th.
edit 2 - compilation song title is "Let's Get Swampy (Drop of Sun Jam)" - from
discogs
