PK,

I know I might be getting a little ahead of myself here, but IF the album itself ends up not coming with the lyrics in it, do you think you could ask Noah if it's okay if you post them on here when the time comes? I'm really into the lyrics from these songs and who knows if they will all be straightforward discernable on record...

yo sonic boom.. physically i find it extremely challenging to play a sampler as a live instrument without looking like a fool but panda bear seems to have made an exquisite art form out of it all. He doesn't seem to be doing much live pad work like araab muzik or people like that so it makes me wonder how much of his new material is sequenced and how much of it does he trigger himself? even your live stuff has a similar quality, utilizing knobs and faders to create a musical pool of sorts. I guess there isn't a rule book for playing samplers and synth modules like there are for guitar or piano etcc. and in general I should say they're responsible for some of the most progressive styles of music because of that ... so anyways what types of functions do you guys like to use to make things more physical in a live context? surely there is more going on up there then meets the eye

If Panda Bear's solo shows follow the same "rules" as AC's full band shows, then everything is triggered live with no sequencing or backing tracks.

I mean, it depends on what your definition of "trigger" is. If one of the band members is playing, say, a looped percussion track on an SP-404, then yes, all they have to do is press the pad once and the loop will continue to play without any necessary further input. So in that way some parts of the song are, in a sense, backing tracks.

This should be contrasted with artists who simply have a prerecorded backing track of all instruments and sing over it, e.g. some rappers (not to discount the benefits of a good DJ). In this case there's no control over the instrumentals - they simply play the same thing for every performance. (Once again, not true if you have a good DJ). Or maybe there are some live instruments and some that are prerecorded backing tracks, but either way the backing tracks are completely on autopilot.

To me, the difference is that at all times, AC have complete control over all of their sounds, and they can change up songs at will. It's sort of semantics anyway as to what counts as a "backing track." But anyway, I don't mean to start a discussion about this. I think what's most important is that the live performance is interesting and engaging, and I think we can all agree on that.

Yeah, it kind of just seems like he triggers a lot of long sequenced parts, like entire verse and chorus progressions, and basically controls all of the various parts through a mixer to do the transitions.

I agree. They allow a lot of looseness and experimentation especially Noah. I feel he changes little things up the most night to night.

It's kind of selfish of me, but I hope it's very close to the Pittsburgh show so I can buy a copy there and experience the show before I listen to the studio versions.

I think it's pretty possible that it can be released in november or later. sb's comments on the forum have basically implied they're still early in the process of making the record (correct me if im wrong because i could be wrong about that)

i mean, remember when tomboy was slated for a sept 2010 release? we might as well be looking out for april 2015 on this one.

sonic boom, would you/can you hint at how far along you guys are? sorry if this comes off as greedy

I'd be surprised if it didn't come out this year...the two bits of information common to every piece of press are 1.) It's tentatively called 'Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper' and 2.) It's coming out later this year.

Anything could happen, sure, but it's probably too early to rule out a 2014 release...there's still half the year left!

In general , i'd say if you're using constant loops or long unlooped
samples , effects are a good way to inject human bandwidth .
But in general ( least w/out thinking too hard ) many people still
play live elements - with Mr Noah it'd be vox & guitar & synth . I similarly usually
Play keys & sing , but also the triggering of short 'attendants' can add a
nice live performance angle . (Attendants , carriages & trails are the names
i give to the families of sounds that seem like sweet nothings , but corral the vibe )
If u do 'on the fly' looping within loops , spinning loops intp backwards mode etc
theres a world of ways to go . Everyone i know does it a little differant.....
...and Noah...... He does it a little differant every tour , that i've noticed....
A change is as good as a rest , as they say ....
Morning ! Px

for panda bear
person pitch was triggered small loops
tomboy was sequenced with his m3 for instrumentation n additional loops were triggered i think
n i think this time around it is sequenced on his octatracks. theyre less for triggering n more for sequencing and additional live effects n mixing n stuff
but mpp they triggered all their loops, even a lot of the time not looping at all and just triggering samples.
