Panda's lyrics have been fucking wacko since homies and a little in PW lol. He's talked in interviews about how he changed his approach to make stuff more about external stuff than internal struggles, and it seems like his external world is really damn weird o_O

I think it's really interesting how he went from using a lot of sayings and cliches back in his old lyrics (to good effect of course). stuff like its so lame that you can take my feelings and make yourself feel better.... super literal and also a literal conversational tone that you might actually speak. Now it's rare if i can figure out what he's talking about in any more than brief glimpses.

There kind of used to be another Lennon/McCartney parallel because a lot of Paul's lyrics were like that too. I always thought the opening verse of Back in the USSR kind of just sounded like a guy telling his SO about his trip in plain language. It's awesome how relateable and friendly and home-y (no pun intended) it feels, along with Panda's conversational lyrics like the previous example. Whereas John would be way more abstract and using visual imagery, similar to Avey. They've both definitely changed over the years though. I get a little frustrated with Panda's lyrics now because I can't find a way for them to be meaningful to my life and feelings, but they are really colorful. I find myself singing Flight so much even though I don't get the words at all.

all this pb hate makes me sad :-(
i always find his songs to be some of the strongest on the albums.
i feel like hes singing directly to us during "appreciate" (or Out There as some of y'all know it by). i think hes been subtly tipping his hat at us since homies, and wants us to know he sees and appreciates our support.
and y'all go on the board and talk cash shit about our boy.
sad :(

im not referring to most recent panda/paul comparison post, just saying y'all have been shitting on him in this thread, and i've seen it on reddit, spiritposting, etc.

cryptic or not panda just sings phrases constantly (eg there is nothing more natural then wanting to win...or why did i fly so high...)...and panda's songs are dope. out there is a sick song and i hope strangers is present on the album and gem and i cause the record will have a lot o variety - jumping from this ambient jazzy prog to pop is so sick. my 3 favs songs rn : DEFEAT, dragon slayer, strangers, with passerby as a close 4th.

Panda's songs should be on their own EP, I really don't see how they will fit with this record's vibe. I am usually a Panda shill but not this cycle. His stuff just doesn't seem to cohere with the other dudes' vibe, which I'm assuming came together as they were working on the prepping for the Music Box show.

i definitely disagree. i feel his presence is always welcome in this group dynamic. i feel like songs like 24 and appreciate (or out there as some know it) fit right in with songs like cherokee, prestor john, etc.

I think there's a case to be made that his stuff is much more upbeat than Avey and Deak's this time around. 24, Strangers, and Gem and I all have that same uptempo vibe. But then again so do Dragon Slayer and Bolder, and those are Avey songs, so I think there's a good deal of cohesion here. And I think the material would be pretty sluggish without Panda's vibe to balance things out.

Actually ya I think Playing the Long Game would land a little harder if the lyrics were simpler. I too have been pondering his songwriting this past decade lately. He's really carved out his own style I think

Yeah I definitely agree, I feel like he switched up his approach to lyrics quite a bit starting with Tomboy, and that style has just gotten more defined (if not refined) since then. It's an approach that is usually somewhat hit or miss for me, occasionally it feels like he's trying to shove too many clumsy metaphors into one song (looking at you FLIGHT) but other times it's really effective and feels genuinely unique. Also I can have kind of a delayed response to some of his songs, something that feels awkward and impenetrable on first listen might suddenly be v clear to me months later upon relistening. I like most of the lyrics on Buoys. Also Sunset.

im definitely cool w the boys exercising patience again. it's been a while since theyve slowed it down. that being said, variety is also key. infant dressing table fits perfect in hcti. i want these slow jams badly but they need some upbeat panda bangers to contrast.

PB is definitely one of the weirdest lyricists out there these days. And that's not even the only song where he has two lines that end with leg. Lol

after getting demoitis from the POTM/Buoys live video and before the album was released i always thought it was
Let this sickle land
Far from the other plane
the sickle being a grim reaper reference..

i hope they don't go with a glossy production style like they've been favoring for awhile for LP2020. these tracks feel too organic for that. i can imagine some dub-inspired goopiness on avey's bass guitar and lush delay on panda's drums... what if they got lee perry at the controls :guitar:

To comment on the noticeable change in Panda lyricism in the past decade: I love it!

Yes, it's metaphor after dense metaphor, but fuck yes! I honestly feel like there is a lot of cool wordplay and dense themes Noah is dipping into recently, and have been a bit surprised there hasn't been more reaction here to deciphering what he is saying.

To comment on how they don't belong on this album:

Well, I haven't heard them. I usually save the boots till after the album release, excluding hearing them personally live. BUT!!! What someone said about my girls and in the flowers being v different tempos/energies but syncing super well rings very true. These guys are so so so good at reading and respecting and reacting to each other's energies; what they create musically is always a collaborative effort, so to me, whose songs are whose, or whether they are fast or slow really doesn't matter.

Panda busts in with angelic harmonies you almost didn't realize a person could make, Avey hecking expressing his soul however he hecking chooses cause he is puur, Deakin noodlin and canoodlin around in his gentle ways ~reminding us we have space~, and Geo(who has been what you've actually been hearing the whole time who not only controls the mixer to the band but to your literal mind).

Whether they penned the song or not doesn't seem to limit their influence on what the song turns into in the end. I have faith in their process, and acknowledgement of each other's differences and how we all balance each other out, and also their understanding of what a cohesive album is. I'm like 'do exactly what you feel you need to do,' and am so hype for whatever they feel like expressing next!

I dont like defeat but i do think it has the best studio magic potential. I wanna know wtf inspired the harpsichord. It could just be music with harpsichord but i feel like they saw a shakespeare play on acid or something

Also i bet passerby & downdowndown get combined into 1 song like just glued together at the ends

Im waiting for better quality boots or studio stuff for this tbh. I like panda on the drumlit again and the autotune and marimbas but the recordings dont seen to do the compositions justice for me. Hope they do another tour before release.

This was too short of a tour. But a great week nonetheless. If this really is the last tour , thats alright right ? Hopefully theyll do a couple more shows if not this year then next year. They can only do so many i guess. Again what a time that was.

Since they said this was their last tour before album drop, I'm guessing they jump into the studio in January. Historically it has taken them roughly 8-9 months after recording to release the album. I think we will get a Late Summer, early Fall 2020 record. Oddly enough, every time Deakin is in the picture this is the exact schedule. Record in January, release in September.

I predict earlier than that, I bet they want to do summer festivals with the new album

The part in defeat after the middle circus jam and before when they start singing again reminds me of reworked chocolate girl like the intro. Again thank you to all who took the time and effort for all of us to enjoy the entire week of shows. Thought maybe a snippet or two , maybe some photos , even a setlist would be enough for me at least but no. The good people recorded each and every night and my entire soul pours out eternal gratitude for your love.

I’ve never been one for pre-album boots but I got so hooked on the new songs seeing them at Desert Daze that I just had to go through and listen to the other sets as well. Cherokee is one of the best songs they’ve ever written, really can’t wait for this album!
