I talked to Noah about it when I saw him in Houston. He said at the end of October they where all meeting up but didn't say if it was to record or write... probably to write though

Gotta say I agree.

If there was one thing I had to nitpick about AC of late it's that there hasn't been time between the set up and the punch line, if you know what I mean.

This clicked with me the other day and prompted the other thread.

Things like the Banshee Beat chord change wouldn't happen these days because the first half of the song would just be chopped out. Maybe four bars before the chord change. In fact, you'd get a 20-second 'mad' noise and then four bars, then the chord change, then straight into swimming pool.

Someone on here I think mentioned that he would like the next ac album to be their "west coast album", with lots oh hip-hop influences, sort of like Taste. Upon hearing the new "sometimes" I instantly thought that song fitted that description in a very cool way. I'm not speculating whether they are releasing that song or not but I would be thrilled if they pursued that sound in their next album

Yea working with ben allen pretty much set MPP toward a very hip hop bassy sounding mix. But if i had to speculate i think they might be going toward a more housy sort of electronic feel.

i think this is definitely a good thing. the way they wrote chz by just jamming together rather then throwing around ideas beforehand made the album feel so crammed compared to the rest of their discg. I definitely don't dislike chz as much as a lot of people on here, hell i actually enjoyed it, it was one of my top albums of 2012, but it definitely was not god-level to me (which is pretty much every other ac/solo release they have done).

Brother Sport, minus vocals, does sound like the kind of thing Derrick May plays in his DJ sets, colourful 'tribal' techno, especially those chirping synth lines. Aside from that, few superficial comparisons apply, though that is something I love about them and PB specifically: the ability to deconstruct their influences into something only vaguely reminiscent of source.

I just want them to take their time, really. I know they wrote the MPP songs in an hour or something but they were touring them for ages, tweaking and developing them. I also suspect that having to adapt to a new working method - without Deakin - they were challenged and therefore excited. No surprise that I find Sung Tongs era equally refreshing. Certainly, it's nothing against Deakin - my favourite AC records are probably Feels and SJ - but the limitations allowed them to thoroughly explore other sounds.

One thing I thought about the other day was that their steady march towards trad pop/rock/dance songwriting has left behind the more atmospheric pieces which used to form part of their albums. Loch Raven, #1, Visiting Friends, Two Sails, etc. I could list any number of songs from pre-Feels, really. I appreciate that they're not really exploring sound in the same way any more, as songwriting has come to the forefront, but it is an element of their music that I really miss and love.

I was thinking, imagine if Pulleys took the circuitous route on CHz that it did live...That was one of the highlights of that tour, just to see that they still have it in them, that lightness of touch that creeps up on you and fills your world. I was driving my girlfriend to hospital the other day and listening to Loch Raven and I realised that the 'song' is barely even there, just delicate fragments arranged to allow you to appreciate the parts and the sum, Zen in the true sense.

Now, I also appreciate that, from Satie to Basic Channel, that sense of saying more with less is as old as the days but it is one of my favourite things about AC's music. I do think it requires clarity of vision, though, and complete confidence in what you're doing. Do they have either any more? I hope so.

Great post. I love what you said about the way that the band deconstructs their influences—you can pick up on influences here and there, but you would never mistake Animal Collective for another band.

Also v true about Loch Raven, especially the parts where everything drops out except the two voices and that piano sample (?) that runs throughout the song. One of my favorite moments in any AC song.

No matter what the next AC tour/album cycle brings, I'm totally excited for it, especially since if I know this band, it'll sound like nothing else they've done before.

And me too, completely. No matter whether I've been a little disappointed by a few of their recent twists and turns, they're still the most invigorating and inspiring musicians I've ever had the pleasure of following and I also rate them very highly as people, based on everything I've heard from them.

I talked to noah in sept - he said they were writing new material but not recording this year (2014).

My general feeling on the next animal collective is that I'm alright if it's their last, I just want it to be as great as the other 9 plus the solo work, which I think will be the case. Also, I want their last album to have all 4 members, it would just seem wrong if for some reason the full band didn't go out on the same note.
