I am really surprised how fresh it still sounds. When it came out It kind of blind-sided me and it wasn't what I was expecting at all, I was expecting down there pt2 (happy version), then little fang came out and I was like: :pwn:

But it grew on me fast and I had it in the car a bunch during that summer. Saw and recorded them in Ohio (first time I got to talk to them, and they were so nice and humble, Me and my gf mainly talked to Angel and Jeremy since all the guys were bum rushing Avey)

I should know by now that I am not going to be able to predict their next "sound" but little fang and floridada are probably the two singles that completely threw me the most upon first listen, but eventually clicked and I was able to get into their "vibe" (GF still thinks PW stuff sounds like frog farts/burps but likes the songs live)

I like the Slasher Flicks songs a lot, but mostly think they work much better live than in studio. I really like the style of songwriting Avey was working in at the time, seems like he was still in the Centipede style of making sort of complicated pop songs that would quickly dart from one section to the next. You can really hear it in songs like The Outlaw and Roses on the Window, songs like that are so exciting the first time you hear them cause it really is impossible to tell where they'll go next. Also That, It Won't Grow is one of my fav songs Avey has ever written.

The Blind Babe to Strange Colors run is so tight. Maybe Catchy let's it down a bit. But That It Won't Grow > The Outlaw > Roses is insane. It's up there.

agree that the songs are better live, That it won't grow in particular
the mix on the album is pretty poor imo, the vocals and guitar are way too low and the drums are too exposed. I like the synths and synth bass but they could've used some grit

favourites are That it won't grow, strange colores, catchy, roses on the window

I hated roses on the window at first because it's so long and I felt like it didn't go anywhere, but then I noticed how beautiful the "I don't want to be bashful" part is, then I was able to appreciate the rest of the track

I once turned this song up so loud in my car, a dog started barking at me when I drove past. :metal

I agree, watching Slasher Flicks live was very interesting. It obviously helped relieve the bit of monotony some of the songs had on the album, but I also remember how Avey kept doing these spicy little jazzy solos in between every song which I thought was very unlike him, but it was honestly really cool. Jeremy's drumming was off the hook too.

Got the CD of this recently and it’s glued into my car. An easy top 5 AC release for me. I wasn’t there to hear it live though I can listen to the boots and watch the pitchfork set and recognize how much it shines live/how dirty the drums are done in the mix. Doesn’t really matter to me though, the songs are SO strong some mixing issues don’t really do much to damper my enjoyment. Overall this album gives off such a strong sense of desperation of wanting to feel good despite the pains and trials we’re going through. Sometimes it feels like Avey’s straining to get to that point but other times it’s a little more effortless (see Little Fang, the lyrics obviously are about this theme, though it’s easier to give that advice out than to follow it)

Maybe it’s just really resonating with me and where I am in my life but I’ll be damned if it isn’t one of their best. (Little Fang is the best pop song of all time)

I went a little hard on slasher house in the leading up to time skiffs listening thread, but I'm definitely much, much more fond of it now. you're totally right that the songs are awesome. though tbh little fang isn't much of a standout for me personally

Little Fang might be my least favorite. It's still great, but the rest of the album is marked by crazy melodies and super dynamic and fervent drumming, which isn't really there on LF. Every other song is some high energy balls to the walls amazing stuff. Your Card, Strange Colores, The Outlaw, Duplex Trip, and Catchy have been on rotation for me a lot recently.

I went hard on this as well, but I think it helped to re challenge my approach to it and made me absolutely love it. I find it funny that it almost is one of the hardest to approach AC projects despite how fun and catchy all the songs are.

I don’t think LF is the best song on the album (that’s Modern Days E) but it’s very nostalgic for me and a special song for me and my partner. It’s the catchiest one I think and just an incredible sing along, will forever be one of my favorite songs It’s also the most overtly Halloweeny as basically Dave’s own crack at a novelty song a-la the Monster Mash but it’s so sincere

Agreed on Modern Days E. Revisited this album again last week and something suddenly clicked for me on Modern Days E all of a sudden. Haven’t been able to stop listening to it since.

My favorite before was Catchy. Apt title.

I will sing the praises of Roses On the Window for probably the rest of my days, something about it's structure and the way the energy of it sort of expands and contracts throughout the song just leaves me hypnotized.

The Outlaw is very good (and the future) -- CHziest track of the set

i attended the very first slasher flix show with 3 friends and so without knowing what to expect i remember we all thought the outlaw was the clear highlight of the show, it went so hard blasting loudly in that tiny venue, the outlaw is the future part felt like it lasted forever

I was at that same show, to this day it remains one of my favorite AC related gigs I've been to. Hearing all those songs for the first time was truly wild, I remember Blind Babe and Your Card in particular absolutely blowing me away.

blind babe was quite the opener, wish they opened with that on the album. i remember being on line and they sound checked blind babe and i was like 'oh my god what the fuck is that??' then they sound checked oliver twist and i was like no fucking waaaay. off topic now but i think my favorite ac shows were deakin w band playing sleep cycle and union transfer post-chz show with a really good setlist and crowd. biggest ac regret was missing panda bear doing tomboy era shows w/ sonic boom in 2010 or 2011 because they were 21+ and i wasn't old enough yet :negative:

Started listening to Lay Lay Off, Faselam (de-reversed) and instantly got choked up and turned it off. It's been years since I've listened and a lot more difficult than I thought to revisit. Not much music has that effect on me, maybe it's a good thing.

man i got to see slasher flix a few times when they were touring and they were, without a doubt, one of the best most exciting live bands i've ever seen bar none. "outlaw" for SURE a live highlight, and i gotta show love for little fang, which is indeed the best pop song ever written period. not as wild live, but man, what a cool moment.

really happy that we're getting new avey, but hoping this doesn't push back time skiffs 2, like i hope domino isn't thinking of this as a solo era, with reset and now this, then time skiffs 2 comes late 23 :( historically I don't think a solo record and an AC record have been released close to each other
