completely agree, sj's tracklist is immaculate. Water Curses is great but I wouldn't swap any of those tracks into sj.
Only thing I have with safer is that it could've been its own single, rather than the B-side to peacebone. but hey, it's not like nobody knows about safer.

alright can we talk ab on a beach/maya now? idk if t counts as an sj song or an mpp song, does anyone know? i know they started playing it with the mpp lineup but it sounds more like an sj song to me and they didn't play a lot of sj songs till around the time they were playing that one and even a bit after. such a great song i wish we had better recordings of it.

To me, it sounds like a song they probably finished after recording SJ -- and I think it would've worked well on Water Curses.
The BBC version is good enough quality for me... I'm satisfied with this being our best(?) version. Definitely has some Spirit vibes on the track too...
They've definitely got to release a second Animal Crack Box one day.

Woooow I forgot about From a Beach. That song is on their top shelf/among their deepest childhood woodland vibes- along with their early records, in the flowers, winters love, etc. I’m satisfied with the bbc recording for sure

From the Beach is one my favorite unreleased tracks. I'm pretty sure its MPP era tho. It has that watery, heavy kick drum/dance beat, psych feel to it.
I'll concede that Safer wouldn't work on SJ. Its too sprawling and loose and SJ songs are pretty concise. Agree with roopn that Safer does seem marginalized as a b-side on a single. Maybe they should've added it to Water Curses EP.
I've never really liked Derek. I think the drums are really corny/cheesy/tacky and not a fan of PB's close out vocals. Winter Wonderland seems too "live" of a song to fit on SJ, but its a cool song. Sick album tho, and glad it gets its praise from fans. After MPP, I feel its the most accessible to the non-initiated.
My suspicion is that the first album that really connects with a new AC fan ends up being their favorite. For me it was Sung Tongs and Feels pretty close together. Then I eagerly awaited and salivated for anything they put out. The pre-SJ bootlegs were amazing, and Fireworks had a sweet guitar part from Deakin in the intro that got cut out (first case of demoitis for me!) I read that a big goal was to not make Feels 2 and they definitely succeeded in that sonically.

Getting antsy for news on what's next. A single or even info, anything. Was thinking about this era as a whole. I've found myself a little bored with the boots which is strange because I'm yet to see them live this go around (but will soon, at last). Hard to believe some of these songs have been knocking around since 2018, with the era beginning in earnest 2019. Whereas before you could neatly define each era by its album and accompanying EP/single, this one's been different. The pandemic era. From Bridge to Quiet through to Skiffs--with the logistics of COVID shaping how the music was assembled--to Reset and Panda's slew of features, a joyous reaction to these uncertain times (with Noah embracing his poppier tendencies)--ending with whatever's next, hopefully, surely culminating with Defeat. It's been quite a ride. Live from Music Box, the tiny desk concert too. If you're willing to lump all these releases and whatever's next together ~spiritually~ then it's hard not to see it as their best ever era.

8-minute track! I was expecting an acoustic guitar + field recordings instrumental. This is that plus cool electronic flourishes, vocals buried in effects and much more -- good track.

Bloody hell this is sublime. Eucalyptus/Meeting of the Waters with a bit of a Skiffs transition vibe.
Sorry if I missed this but does anybody have any more info on this? i.e. who plays on it, when/where it was recorded etc?

I think the guy from Reddit who posted about this before it was announced (and was widely disbelieved) said it's an Avey/Geo track.

And I believe it was recorded at drop of sun while they were practicing for tour there last year? The track is so good, love the auto tune parts! Can't wait to listen again with headphones.

I’d like to know more about how they wrangled together this massive lineup of people AND produced a collection with such a unity of sound and approach. Brown Thrasher fits in really well with all the other musical numbers in the collection - bird sampling, atmospheric vocals, quietness alongside textured soundscapes. Really good stuff.

really outstanding track, relaxing and intriguing. Opening sound could be directly sampled from melody unfair.
anyone know of anywhere to buy a digital copy of the song?
maybe one day I'll have $400 for the 20lp box :0

it really is astonishing when listening to all of it - so much quality music by so many of my favorite artists. there's just so much on it that it's gonna take awhile to digest

I was hoping it would show up on bandcamp but so far I've only found it on iTunes and Amazon, both of which I believe are below 320kbps
