bottom line, you guys let a lot of people down lol, keep it in another thread

in other news, sounds like there's no officially dead songs from this era YET, didn't care much for til i die (seemed too linear, even for Noah) but wazzup was a fun one

Polite Debate ? I'm terrified !!! haha
it's interesting for me to read .......
it's easy to feel 'challenged' , but everyones being nice.....i'm impressed...
I was surprised by the bit below tho......

''besides, lyrics are the least important part in music, unless you are a 12 year old girl who likes to sing along to the songs. panda bear largely get's by because his melodies are that good, not that he's a great lyricist.''

I confess , I must be a 12 yr old girl .........haha ......
I would disagree on a couple of points , ventured here & close by.....
I think Noah IS a great lyricist .....r u saying 'tropic of cancer '/ 'no joke' or however u call it isnt genius?? . the lyrics are lethal.....direct heart hit....
.....those are'nt harps u can hear . it's the fragile oscillations of heart strings 'singing' in sympathy...

music , for me , is organised sound . or sometimes disorganised sound ....
I think he has a knack of pooling chaos , then parting the waves to reveal something uniquely brilliant .
....and its usually his voice & those words that do the lions share of that.
but thats just my opinion , and really , whatever turns you on about it is fine by me .. pkx

Tropic of Cancer....that's really cool. but also pretty sad considering the subject matter.

I knew SB would have the right idea re lyrics/noah's lyrics... You should collabo on some lyrics with Noah, SB. Yr posts are like song lyrics lol

um yr on. Kind of feel like that, Principe and Tropic are sort of centerpieces maybe, and as a rule, you shouldn't put those heavy-hitters as track 1...closer tho, maybe. Like i'd actually put money on Spaces w/THX being the closer

I would expect the album to go a bit like:

Fill Those Spaces
Make Believe
Day After Day
Faces in the Crowd/Jabawaqy (which ever makes it. If both make it, I bet they're one after the other)
Dark Cloud
Vacuum
Tropic of Cancer/No Joke
Other Guy
Principe Real

the only thing I know is that Principe Real probably won't be the closer, that's just wishful thinking. It seems like Noah likes putting the softer, more gentle tracks at the end of his albums. Maybe a new one? All I know is that it would be really cool if Fill Those Spaces was the opener.

Hey SB, do you know what's Other Guys' real name? It's the one with the really dreamy synth and catchy melody that kinda sounds like Atiba Song/Boneless.

Guess I need to check out Miller's 'Tropic..'..

Also, streetflash how r you going to leave off Down Below? That one has been particular fascinating lately.. "there is a song, you're on it for so long..," love the way that song builds, and the swirling harps, a bit of continuity with Tropic (gonna say the name of the song a lot now).

And Other Guy reminds me of Father Time more than Atiba/Boneless...

Ok my best bet for opener is Make Believe. Side A closer is Vacuum. Side B opener is Tropic into Down Below and Other Guy like recent shows. And closer is Principe-->Spaces->THX

"other guy" definitely has a more carrots/father time-ish feel than atiba/boneless.

tropic of cancer, though, that's an interesting title. from the ones we've gotten so far they're nothing like i expected them to be called!

to weigh in on the panda bear lyric debate: panda bear's lyrics are some of my favorite lyrics out there. his lyrics are so honest and straightforward and that makes it really easy for me to connect with what he's saying. he doesn't shroud his messages in euphemisms/metaphors etc as often as other lyricists do IMO, everything is more out in the open. which isn't to say he doesn't do that sometimes. but compare a track like 'bros' to something like 'safer.' it's easier for me to have a cathartic response to something like 'i don't ever want to smoke another joint cause without it i'll be okay' than to something like 'lately I've been seeing beings, they look like they float at the back of my headroom…the lion in your dreams, the lion is good for your dreams, accept the lion' etc because you don't have to interpret the lyrics as much first, he's saying what he wants to say right out in the open. i really just don't understand why some people find his lyrics "cringeworthy" as someone here put it (and cited one of my favorite lyrics!). idk just my 2 cents! :)

he said on an interview that tomboy (the album) was suppose to be called afterburner. after being burned with person pitch's success.

he also didn't like to put two songs with the first letter B together (bullseye / benfica) so he changed to afterburner

Favorite Panda Lyrics Time, go

as if these are anything but poetry:
Spoiler: show
Tantrum Barb

There on the threshold below to the garden
In front of the rest of the city that ends at the
Banks of the river and stretches back to me and
Holds a square patch of backyard where I’m looking at
Bunches of children, some fixed at their parents,
Take colorful strings draped cross branches of lemon and
Orange emit from the ends of it seem like
A galaxy cupped in a leafy red canopy

And I feel the breezes blow, pushing storms on my arms,
I'm out on the tips of spires, you can stare into the sea

Daily Routine

Just a sec more in my bed
Hope my machine's working right
When it's just precisely tuned
That's how it comes out so nice

Make sure my kid's got a jacket
Keys and coat and shoes and hat
Strap a stroller to my back
Bouncing along every crack

What can I do to make it fast?
Sing a song to pass the playground
What can I do as traffic pass?
Guard my girl from muffler's black gas
What can I do to make it fast?
Pop a jump but not too hard
Take a little left up at the rest
Stop and look at the traffic signal

Up uneven steps and talking's hard

Just a sec more in my bed
Hope my machine's working right

Rosie Oh

As I walked across the bridge
With a backpack cross my shoulder blades
The Everglades below the wooden cracks

You had offered up a ride
So I might not get accosted by
The watery slide

But I said no I’d rather not
Said no I’d rather not step in

As I left my home I cried
And a substituted figure tried
To reconcile the things I'd left behind

You had opened up the doors
And made a place where I could sit inside
And fortify

But I said no I’d rather not
Said no I’d rather not step in

I'm on my own
Now no ones been invested in
How no one knows what's best for him

I'm on my own
When no ones left to light the load
Then so one goes to lift alone

I'd like to embrace it all

Have I made this or is it
That I've been made?

O Please Bring Her Back

Go to sleep sweet child
Push aside your cares
Calm your beating heart
Ease your furrowed brow

O God, please stay here
The night is windy and dark
God, sit by my side
God, stay through the night

Bring her please
Please bring her black

I can't but shut my eyes
Can't but quicken my pulse
Sweat beads on my neck
Tears well in my eyes

Bring her please
Please bring her back

She began my heart a-beatin'
She began my mind a-lovin'
She starts my hands a-feelin'
She's as much of me as I am

Bring her back
O please bring her back

On The Farm

Chores are done
The tractors parked inside the barn
The cows are grazin' in the fields
Horses in their stalls
Ma is cookin' up a meal
That freebirds from the dirt on my hands
It's on my hands

The sores and bumps on my body speak the work that I've done
Such a long day
(On the hard bench there will be long days in our eyes)
It'll be a long day tommorrow
The day is warm in my blue jeans
(Bring the axe down, bring the axe down)
Sittin' up on the crooked fence
(Cool the whole across (?))
Tip my hat to nothin' in particular
Just glad to be so simple

Inside A Great Stadium and Running Race

Gun fires and each and every man digs in
They make a shuffle as each runner gets going on his way
Cheers rise in the stands like water in a glass

Some say "go this guy" and others "go that guy"
Packets going men are jockeying for position
Looking more like a herd of angry horses

Round the first two bends and men are left behind
Arms up and down legs back and forth lane 4 now lane 5 takes the lead

Man down; someones been tripped up
It's clear this man must recieve medical attention
Man down, Man down, Man down

Race goes on lane 2 pushes front
Sweat on the edges each side
Step step step step find a way to get more speed
It's gonna be close

Carrots

That old good boy Mitch just wanted
To tell some jokes
Well now I'm just trying
To play some notes
Do you know what I say
Do you know what I mean?
Have you heard through these words
Just how I'm seen
There's a reason that I work
So hard at this stuff
When all I want to do
Is take it easy

It's not a ticket
For you to pick at
Other people
Who don't know whats up
Like you're so sure you do

You kind of make me want to
Shut your mouth just to keep out
All of those unfriendly feelings
Just because you've got
A lot of wax
And all those first editions
I want you to know
Sticks and stones may
Break my bones
But words will never hurt me
All I need to know
I knew so early

It's so lame that
You could take my feelings
And make yourself feel
Like youre better than
Anyone else who hasn't heard

Listen in between your notes
There's something been going on
While you were busy taking notes
And look in between your moments
Theres something good happening
It's good to sometimes
Slow it down

What's the point in pouring it all out
When you guys just wear it on your coat?
I believe that for this piece of time
We can really crank us up a lot
Get your head out from those mags
And websites who try to
Shape your style
Take a risk just for yourself
And wade into the deep end of the ocean

Surfer's Hymn

When there are hard times I'll step it up
When there are dangerous times I'll spot them up
I'll take my time to make up my own mind
To set it up when the times are calling for a steady decree
How do I know it's time?
Even if I've got mine?
Is it wise to know what wisdom is?
If I could err on every good side every time

Out on the water a rider can ready
Though waves come crashing a good board can steady
I wouldn't ever want to bet upon
The balance on
What's going on
Would I? Would I? Would I? Would I?

Stay what's in my way
What's in my way?
Got to have it to get over it

To have an empty fortune when I fear
To have a deadly weapon as it's called
Which is an answer to a challenge made by anything
Then
To always know just what things violence needs
How do I know its time?
Even if I've got mine?
Is it wise to know what wisdom is?
If I could err on every good side every time

Out on the water a rider can ready
Though waves come crashing a good board can steady
I wouldn't ever want to bet upon
The balance on
What's going on?
Would I? Would I? Would I? Would I?
Why wouldn't I?
to be honest i cringed hard the first time i heard "coolness is having courage," but it's grown on me enough, and for the rest i think he has a really poetic, restrained and magical ability with words in general

omg that last page wtf I thought a single dropped or something.

Alsatian darn's lyrics always get to me. The coupling of the build up to the big part before the last little verse and the lyrics "got to do what you've got to do"(I think that's it anyway) is one of the best parts of tomboy.

speaking of the beatles, I always thought it was interesting how Dave is like Paul lyrically and John musically, and vice versa: Noah's music is usually poppier like Paul's but his lyrics are a lot more like John's. Dave writes with really vivid imagery and creates little worlds, with recurring tropes (cf. "Penny Lane" and "Little Fang"), while Noah's lyrics are more personal, direct and straightforward (cf. "My Girls" and "Julia").

"Bros" is a great example - super catchy and poppy musically, very Paul, but the lyrics are pretty nasty and direct, very John. reminds me of "How Do You Sleep?" from Imagine, but not AS nasty haha. but it took me a while to realize that "Bros" is a pretty bitter indictment of his friends and family for shaming him about moving to portugal

even the title - apparently Deakin told PB "Bros before hoes" when he was moving - fits the timeline since it was written in 2004 - this is all corroborated on the old CA

^Normally I hate these sort of comparisons as they are somewhat reductionist but I actually really, really like this comparison. It's very apt and it's kind of blowing my mind right now.

Not to say that Avey and Panda are not great songwriters in their own right, but the sort of criss-crossing of two classic songwriter archetypes is very interesting to me.
