Wow, these new songs have stomp and bite that I've been missing from recent Panda material. I'm surprised to hear the light use of vocal modulation and wonder if that'll feature on the studio releases. Cool to hear how much Noah is getting out of the OP-1 synthesizer. You can hear him fucking with the CWO filter on his voice during "Falling Asleep At The Wheel" and "Open Your Eyes", then there's the DNA synth that's featured at the beginning of "Open Your Eyes" and the way it drives that track sounds utterly raw and badass. And the Breath of the Wild vocal sample – holy shit! Perfect usage of that clip. I'm more stoked for this release than I've been since pre-Tomboy. Looking like January for release but I hope it comes sooner!

my impression is that at the beginning they only had the band so they put all they have in it, but after they also establish their solo careers (after PP and DT) I think they prefer to keep more deeply and personal songs on their solo work and animal collective became a band where they come together as old friends and make fun music with more general themes
agreed! i also think AC has become a place they can bring solo songs they are stuck on to get input from the others.

agree with whoever said the songs are very structurally different from greaper even though some of the samples/electronics sound similar. the melodies have this sort of country/folk ramble to them that makes the songs a lot looser and more laid back than the tighter structures of reaper. that's probably why they remind me so much of arthur russell too
also the boot sounds a lot better than I expected when I found it was an iphone recording! good work, and thanks!

Yeah haha I've been searching youtube like every day for a better quality boot. The sound quality is actually pretty great and it's the whole show. Also nice to have all of the visuals with it

So happy someone recorded this! If you see this, can you tell me what your setup is? I'm very curious what the camera is, or if there are default models of cameras that have seamless recording for 20+ minute files.
Again, thanks! Great to have!

I vote yes, even if just for navigational ease.

new splits! just named the instros "bonus beats" for now because there's not really enough context to get new names for. i nearly split the weird guitar loop before tropic of cancer too but

Am I the only one who's way more excited for new Avey than new Panda? I know we just got Eucalyptus and it's been almost 3 years since Grim Reaper, but I'm significantly more interested in the new stuff Avey's been playing live. I caught his set at Desert Daze and it blew me away. Don't get me wrong, I'll be super stoked to hear new Panda whenever it drops, but I think Avey's hitting a new peak lately and I'm surprised it seems like everyone here is way more hyped on Panda.

i just dont have time for the panda boots rn honestly, and dont wanna get obsessed with them like i did the Greaper tour boots... ya way more stoked for avey but that has nothing to do with Panda and everything to do with how much I love Avey's set rn... im #team avey but its not a race/competition of course (tho considering some of panda's lyrics, that dudes competitive af...)

Oh yeah, definitely not a competition - I love Panda and will always be stoked to hear anything any members of this band release, together or solo. I only brought it up cause it seemed like this thread was becoming all about the new Panda.

I've been more interested in Dave's songs since I realised it was his band (as sarfraz used to say, great poster, where did he go?). The Mothlight songs sound even better than much of Eucalyptus, to me, and I bloody love that.
Fun new PB set but I've lost a fair bit of confidence, not in his songwriting or abilities, but his judgement, after the last couple of albums. I think he needs to trust his instincts more, rather than allowing people around him to influence his output. The demos of both sets of songs are top tier, for the most part, the albums are very hit and miss.

i'm with you on that stan. which is actually why i'm excited about this new material. since he's already said that he's basically done with it, it doesn't seem like it's had the time to "marinate" in the same way tomboy and greaper did. hopefully it'll end up sounding a lot closer to the raw awesomeness of the live recordings. for someone who often sings about trusting ones' instincts, i do think noah would benefit a lot from just trusting his instincts more with his own music

Totally agree with this, well-said. As someone who saw one of the first Grim Reaper live shows, almost a year before the album released, I ended up being pretty disappointed with the final product. Still a really good album, way better than 99% of music out there, but felt like it lost a lot of energy/emotion from the live shows which were fantastic. In general, I feel like he can do better than the last 2 albums, which sounds unfair but I can't help but have those expectations of him. Avey, on the other hand, is currently blowing my already sky-high expectations out of the water. I've still loved Panda's recent work with the band though, and I have faith that he still has another Person Pitch level solo work in him.

i agree strongly with this. i still love tomboy and grim reaper but i feel that my favorite live song from each album (surfers hymn and come to your senses) both ended up being my least favorite on their respective albums. the CTYS on the 2015 union park bootleg and the studio version are like night and day and to me they have completely different vibes. but i'm confident these new recordings will be tyte since i think this new batch of songs is better suited for the polished mixing style that he has been moving towards lately.
edit: i kind of reiterated what mrfingers said but yea
