I got into an argument the other day with one of my professors over whether samplers and synths are real instruments. His overall point was "it needs to have been played 100 years ago to be a real instrument"
http://120years.net/the-musical-telegra ... eyusa1876/
First electronic musical instrument was accidentally made 140 years ago by Elisha Gray.
So your professor's broken logic doesn't even work properly.

i almost got sucked into saying the same thing because it's tempting to argue online but the professor isn't actually here so nobody's making his argument and there's no point to refute

hilarious when anyone brings up "real instruments". anything you use to make music is an instrument.

Like saying a singer or rapper isn't a musician somehow

This is interesting discussion about real instruments and real musicians. I've always appreciated the honesty they have about their lack of formal training and varying knowledge (Noah seems to have the most, Brian the least) and I like this because it's inspiring to me and others who don't have a total understanding of formal music that we can still make good tunes
Anyways, for a contrarian opinion
Summertime Clothes is the most overrated AC song and the worst on MPP

contrarian opinion:
geologists contributions on painting with seem to be rather negligible. for the first time in ac history, i cant put my finger on why he's important on the album. there never seems to be enough happening in the songs to warrant having 3 people

"feels" is the least interesting animal collective record to me -- NOT THAT IT ISN'T REALLY GOOD but it's by far the one I return to the least.
it's a little goofy, because i became a rabid ac fan because of that album when it came out. I have a lot of really great memories associated with it, at least (esp w/ "the purple bottle").

I don't think you're hearing everything, or you're crediting too much instrumentation to the other two

Yeah, like we have literally no idea who does what on each record bar the vocals and what they've explicitly stated in interviews. So it's pretty sweeping to outright state that one of the members contributed little to an entire record.
However, I sort of know what you mean about the record's sound as a whole. I'm not going to feign knowledge of how all their equipment works but it does seem like a whole lot. Especially considering what Noah was doing on his own for a similar-sounding LP.

obviously we dont know for sure what he did. just saying, when you listen to the album, it sounds easily made by just avey and panda. it doesnt feel like geologist's watermark shows up much imo. plus, when i saw them live, it seemed like he was hardly doing anything. Twas weird

Side by side no, but in terms of AC records sounding drastically different to one another I'd say they're close enough to warrant the comparison. But I guess what the guy meant was that Painting With barely sounds like it needs two more people, you know? That it sorta comes off as a Panda-Avey album or something. The songs are, instrumentally, fairly straightforward. In the same vein as PBVSGR.
But anyways I think this conception mostly has to do with their static stage presence. I'm sure just as much, if not more, is going on on Geo's side of things here.

Aye, the stripped-down sound is probably a result of the album's more simplistic, 'Ramones' aesthetic innit.
I figured a lot of the sample stuff is Geo's work... The sounds during the bridge of FloriDada, the little rising and falling synths in Burglars... The funny breathing and sax noises on LITG...

yea I just watched the BBC floridada performance againseems to me it's like this:
Avey - Vox, main synth
Panda - Vox, Bass synth
Jeremy - drums
Geo - every single little whizz, zip, whoosh, whirr sample, presumably in control of the backing vocal clips too
without him I think the album would sound very different

the mr. noah EP is leagues better and more memorable than PBVSGR
down there and oddsac are on equal ground with feels, far better than other releases

oddsac and down there have a lot of dissenters or, in the case of oddsac, people who flat out ignore its existence
while feels is seen as by the majority of this forum to be the band's best album
and people put mr noah to the side after pbsvgr came out
so yeah those are pretty unpopular opinions

Hahaha, sorry if that message came across as impolite. Wasn't my intention at all. It's just that, in my experience I've seen quite a few Animal Collective fans sharing the same opinions as yours, me included.

I've only ever seen mainstream music reviewers rag on Down There. On the other hand I've seen very few AnCo fans rag on that album. I don't think people ignore ODDSAC. I think ODDSAC is just easily forgotten/separated from everything else because it is so different from everything they've ever done.

True, but I remember Mr. Noah being much more well received than PBVSGR.

You son of a bitch. Animal collective fanbase is the only one to EVER have these guys use a JOKE NICKNAME given by HIPSTER RUNOFF before the NICKNAMe the BAND ACTUALLY CALLS THEMSELV. (Panda bear vs the TURTLE, THE TURTLE BOTTLE, ON THEIR FKING SOUNDCLOUD) It' amazing me

Yeah, imo Hollinndagain is one of the better albums ever released. I'd have Feels and STGSTV as close second and third, respectively
