huh... never thought of it as opener. But if Defeat needs to be closer, than it could be a hugely epic opener.

Seems like the opener of the like best album ever. Maybe they're gonna try to do their masterwork for this next one. Will have Defeat on it after all.

Yeah if you don't like that robot voice vocal effect from the recent shows then you might still be disappointed in this Cherokee, but imo the climax had a lot more energy than the Asheville version, plus you could hear a lot more details that didn't really show up on the boots. It's so good.

"What's On The Road, It's Shining" is such a classic Animal Collective song title and I love it

I am currently in the process, with 15 min left but I don't want steal hunkswithgun's thunder. It doesn't seem he's on though.

I love it but its also so crowded out with harmonies and layers that I literally can't tell if the melody I really want in it is there. But most of the vibraphoney part is I think. They be trying to do every single melody BUT the one I want lol

love the "I've been down to Cherokee" part now, with just harmonies and no autotune..

I really feel like these 2021 versions of Cherokee have had a lot of the energy sucked out of them :(

yeah I too have major demoitis from Cherokee. the big climax of the song has been totally improved, and that might've been the moment I was most excited for out of all the new songs I heard in 2019

at first I thought so too but now I really don't get that, sure the tempo is a bit slower but the groove is just as strong and the instrumentation is much fuller

never realized until this recording that the beginning of "Genie's Open" reminds me of the first minute of "Recycling"

Was a little lukewarm on Prester/Cherokee here but damn Sea of Light is the huge banger for this era, incredibly excited at the idea of hearing that one live next year. The end was great too, exciting to hear it's a music box track.

Appreciate the love but there's no thunder to be stolen whatsoever!!! We are a collective, after all. :)

This week's was thankfully in full stereo so no back-alley dental work needed. Splitting/upping my raw rip now.

BTW....
I've abstained from any and all Music Box stuff until an official release and what in the BLOODY HELL was that last song. OMG. There are so many surprises hidden within this maze of an era. FUCK YES!!!

Damn I reaaaaally love that hurdy gurdy outro on Cherokee. Was a really touching moment listening to it. I guess I get the new vibe, leaning into the whole noir sound and making it generally more of a somber critique of Americana… but I do miss the jamminess of the original too. That had more of a road trip vibe.

The first thing I thought of when I heard Cherokee in 2019 was noir! For some weird and hilarious reason I always picture a typical detective story (following clues, femme fatale, shady club owners, political corruption, rain and dark and shadows, etc. etc.....but my dog is always the protagonist. Complete with trench coat and magnifying glass. I can and have seen the movie in my head when I listened to it nonstop through quarantine. The new version is still sneaky enough to snap along to but it really doesn't crescendo like it used to. Ol' well.

Anywho, here's week 2.

OK AWESOME! Was so let down they aren't doing a ChZ thing where each member hosts a week. But EVEN more let down that we couldn't even get that sweet, sweet Deak commentary!

love the end jam on genie's but honestly not too sold on the rest of the song. the sung tongs tour version worked much better for me

Maybe recency bias but genies might be my favorite song out of all them. Didn’t realize it wasn’t so popular around these parts but glad to see a warm reception now

I was sus about Genies, maybe just cuz I was like, huh I thought that was a ST-anniversary tour one-off that was good enough for what it is but how does it fit with new stuff, but it has grown a lot. It's great in Cincinnati (I think) last month too.

the end part or so is kinda bonkers.

will also say in the beginning it sounds like In the Flowers and the new Unsolved Mysteries to me. They loooove arpeggios mayne
