Hunks got one too! i'm going to send him my raw file and as of now the plan is to try to come up with a sweet matrix of the two.

Thanks a lot for the boot, sounds great!

I'm psyched for most of the changes they introduced to the new songs. Stride right is beautiful from start to finish (maybe it also helps that there is no one mentioning that it's a waltz every 20 seconds on the recording). Car keys slaps, especially the drum beat, which seems a lot more intricate and groovy now, panda/deakin harmonies in the chorus are wonderful. Prester John and dragon slayer are perfect. As someone mentioned above, sea of light would be an awesome closer to the album. The added vocals in the gem and I verses are great, as is the extended intro.
However, some changes I either have to get used to or they'll continue to rub me the wrong way from now on. I got a huge case of demoitis for the mid section of defeat, it sounds plain wrong now with the different lyrics and instrumentation. It has much less of an impact for me now, I hope they have yet to record it and will change it up again for the studio version. Cherokee wasn't my favorite from 2019, except for the great Outro, but it's a bit of a snoozer now. I really enjoyed the autotuned vocals on all the 2019 versions and I'm especially bummed that they were removed from gem & I and bolder (mostly). Worst of all, panda doesn't play the cowbell in the gem & I chorus anymore. Biggest let down since removing the shakers from the digital version of nod to the folks.

Not sure about the bass licks in Cherokee. Reminds me of Saturdays. Think the breakdown is better though, love Deakin's vocals

Thank you! listened last night, sounds really good - even the audience chatter didn't really faze me (except for fickle)

For the most part I really like the new stuff. not sure if it's just me / just the kind of music ive been into lately, but i feel a little like all of these new songs are pretty lacking in energy or intensity. i like laid-back AC, but i guess i'm just not used to an animal collective show where a lot of it just ... breezes by? i'm thinking about the music box show in 2018, where a lot of the songs were also slower paced, but it was still a gripping performance, in both the general sound and parts like spider bit my lady or the original midsection of defeat. maybe they're just getting warmed up on this tour, but i have to echo what other people are saying about cherokee, and i also feel like it's missing a fair degree of the "weird around the edges" that even the 2019 shows had.

again its probably just because this is the still the beginning of this era. Being bored with an AC record is just my worst fear i guess lol

(New bolder is awesome imo, gives me strong bat you'll fly vibes)

i had a great time at the asheville show and it was so special to see their first show (and my first time seeing the four of them together). the new songs are good but i think the instrumentation can be hard to mix and exposes little slips or uncertainties in a way that other versions of the band (more samplers or more guitars or more hocketing) might have covered up. honestly i'd like to hear some of this with another guitarist the way PW needed live drums to be fleshed out. i assume these wouldn't be issues in the studio either of course and i'm interested to see if things just sound comfier on saturday in raleigh.

i was into the early versions of Defeat so i don't think i prefer the new 2nd mvt, but the rest of it is so good that it doesn't matter. seeing Feels songs with the full band is insane, hearing that fickle cycle riff come in blew me away and the crowd was nuts for BBB.

Need to hear those new versions of Downdown & Strangers.

Also, they played KINGS in Lexington last night so that leaves only Appreciate unplayed on this tour

They absolutely elevated each song except for cherokee. We go back is fuckin phenominal now, i think every change to that song made it insane, the chorus is so bouncy and fun and honestly it gives closer vibes. I'm glad that they cut back on the autotuned vocals. Gem and I is prob my second fav song this tour behind Defeat now. That vocal melody is just so weird and kinda downtrodden and sad. it gives beaten down. Lets do it againnnnnnn

Defeat is now on all fronts better than the music box version/2019. I love how they made the middle section breezy and kind've moody. The ooooooo vocals over the instrumentation between the big bursts of the second part. And then the first and third parts are in fact the best they've ever played it. Music box will always have the 2nd section's whirling energy and strings for sure, but I really like and prefer this direction. I truly think that the first and third parts are pinnacle animal collective. They upgraded it even from 2019 when i was shitting my pants over it. Are they even allowed to do this shit with their songs. All of these songs are pretty mellow for sure, but they are also imo some of the most intense emotionally in ac's whole catalog. And some of the only straightforward melancholic songs, which i think main catalog AC has often times not gone for in turn usually writing more bittersweet jams like banshee beat to tug at the heartstrings.

having the weirdest bout of demo demoitis rn.

the meow wolf boot version of once again (now stride right) has this really annoying drunk girl talking and singing during the show. she decides to add her own harmonies to the end of once again/stride right. thing is- she can actually sing and nails those harmonies that she decided to contribute to the song. i always hated it. but now listening to this asheville boot i miss her and i miss her sweet voice.
who are you mystery girl and how do we get you in the studio with the boys?

This recording is bringing out a lot of the nuance and texture—a lot of Brian's contributions, really—that had, up till now, somehow escaped me. (Or maybe I've just been a lazy listener.) I agree with the poster who argued that the mixing of the instrumentation this time around might be more crucial than in the past, and might be why some of these songs seem to be "less psychedelic" than what we've come to expect from Animal Collective—the weird stuff seems to be a bit buried. Still, really incredible to hear how the songs have evolved over the past couple of years—the small melodic alterations, the slight shifting of grooves, the finessing. (Glad most of the harpsichord is gone from the middle part of "Defeat." Ha. Was a tad too much The Cyrkle.) I haven't dug into the lyrics much yet, but I love how Dave's vocal stylings have gotten a bit more unhinged (the vibrato on parts of "Defeat," etc.).

If the new album info freebirded last week is true (9 tracks, 47 minutes or whatever), it seems "Defeat" is certainly bound for a different release, right? My money's on a follow-up EP with it as the A side and two or three other tracks on the flip side.

I'm loving all this a lot, I miss the central melody of the Cherokee climax a lil but surely that will be one of the harmonies not he recording....right?

whatever, im remembering how kinda jarring the autotune was the first time I heard it 2 years ago and then quickly got WAY into it, and so im totally okay with them kinda tempering/mellowing it down a bit on cherokee/car keys (bolder)

loving defeat. okay so is my math bad or....like how long is defeat usually? 12 or like...16 min? could it be 12? cuz if it could be 12ish, then it could totally still fit on a 9-track, nearly 50 min album if the other songs were pretty tight 3-5 min songs. and a lot of these seem like they will be.

now I know we always want a studio record with hella spaced out transitions but um.... they dont seem to be into that much... thats their live-show style or like... side-projects like Meeting of Waters/Tangerine Reef.

I've come around to it... Idk, couldn't it work?

wait wait wait, this Ashville Defeat is over 20 min lmao. fuck, never mind then. Well what if like every other song is like 2 min lol, and ones a tiny transition.

does almost seem like they might just not put a song bigger than 12 min on a record. hmmmmm. Just do a 12'' single then I guess hmmmmmm. weird. I still want it on the record tho..... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... will take a sec for me to think of Sea of Light as a post-Music Box era song and not a ST anniversary tour bonus oddity but, closer? hmmm

lmao i actually had the hope a few weeks ago that maybe they listened to their own boot and were inspired to get a singer in to do those harmonies with deakin

Mostly yeah I think, but now the melody is a bit different and some people like and some people don't.

I think I liked it last night listening to the Asheville boot. that OG middle melody was never as perfect as the 1st and 3rd part's. The riffing was always great tho and is still there
