I feel like it’s going to be their most emotional release.

What does "no plugins" mean exactly? Like a midi operating thing or something? I thought they recorded Strawberry Jam completely in analog too

Elevado uses only physical/analog effects in all his work. that means no reverb, chorus, echo plugins etc... it's all physical boxes and effects.

^yup plug-ins typically just means digital effects or instruments. that’s usually how AC records anyways, it’s all hardware rather than software, actual fx pedals or boxes or rack units or whatever rather than plugins inside the computer

do people itt think this means they have scrapped/are scrapping the already-recorded versions of these jams?

Do you guys think Tim Koh and Lizzi Bougatsos contributed anything? They were there per some IG photos no? TS was the first AC album since SJ they didn't have guest musicians on and I'd imagine that was bc of the logistical nightmare of bringing more people in the fold

MPP didn’t have any but I will gladly argue that without Ben Allen that album turns out completely different.
For these new tracks we at least know the guy from L’Rain plays sax on defeat. They were probably just hanging out with the GGD crew cuz they’re New York based.

Er, Heather McIntosh played cello on Graze and Bleed; MPP era at least

Did not know this! Incredibly cool to have that Elephant 6 connection. Still down to argue about benny "5th beatle" allen and his influence on the band though any time

No digital plug-ins means that story Avey posted a while back was probably for something else, right? Looked like they were playing around in a DAW in that.

Time Skiffs could have analog elements or mixed to tape. Recording to tape and mixing "out of the box" / without a computer or DAW are different things. Unsure if they've ever excluded computers entirely... they may also record to tape here but then record to Pro Tools to sequence and edit.

The master could always be done in DAW too-- I think that thing Avey was working on could've been Skiffs 2 related if that's the case then. Seems to me like Elevado and PB were mostly recording and touching up in that vid so.
Hell the mastering might not even be done considering they still don't know the release format (or, so they say).

I feel like it’s only special as an analog piece if the sounds themselves are recorded to tape, right?

Mini-disc is digital, yes.
My understanding of the Russ ig post was that he was fiddling with mic placement and getting levels.

Yeah avey used an 8-track to record that I'm pretty sure.

skiffs was recorded digitally and then I believe mixed analogue by marta salogni. digital/analogue hybrid processes can add a lot a mix, though I couldn't explain any specifics haha. Marta was in a podcast a few months ago talking about her process of using tape at length, though ac wasn't discussed specifically

Side note and should probably be in the live section but for any London heads, AC have just been announced for Pitchfork London. Playing a show on November 11th at Hackney Church with support from Jenny Hval and Marina Herlop. Tickets on sale tomorrow (Fri 1st) at 10am local time. If anybody has a presale code for Dice please lemme know!

This red bull interview with Russel is long but interesting.
https://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/lec ... -your-mind
Seems like he really tries to avoid digital at all if possible and tries to only use pro-tools to edit if he really needs to so I think there's a good chance TS 2 will be mixed analog. Not sure what will have to happen with mastering for different formats.

A lot of studios will record to tape, then digitize it and throw the tracks in Pro Tools for easy editing/punching in (like opposite field said above). I know some engineers (I can't speak on Russell Elevado's workflow) will send whatever audio to an outboard piece of gear (reverb, delay, compressor etc), and then record the effects signal back onto tape (and then into pro tools)
Here's a video of him in studio going over how he adds delay to D'Angelo's drums -

If a digital format doesn’t go beyond the window of perceptible quality difference then I’d consider it analog. Like 360p YouTube videos are analog lol

That's like the exact opposite of what I'd say lol.
Like at the highest qualities analogue and digital become indistinguishable, but low quality analogue and digital are quite distinct from each other.

Analog just means wet I think. that's why digital is Electric and Analog is wooden. Because if wooden gets wet it smells bad and that's good

I would love them to re-record Skiffs with this setup, kind of like NERD did with their debut album. Just a kind of 'hey Russell while we're here...' Would be great.
