echoing all sentiments on the GQ write-up, amazing insight and yeah kind of astonishingly personal. so glad to know a bit more about this guy who's art fascinates me so deeply. and feeling for him too, the suicide mention puts a new heaviness on a lot of the already heavy themes on the record. I'm so glad he has some network of support and is doing better... also, 50mg may refer to antidepressants, not getting high? and take pills too for that matter

i like the score but pitchfork reviews lately are so poorly worded. always superlatives every where you look. the most beautiful this, the most heartfelt that, the least experimental–

Seems like album is reviewing well which is cool for him. In terms of like getting word out and $$$ for him, don't care otherwise of course I'm not a WEIRDO. And I'm sorry but I do not think the p4k is very well written for what THATs worth.
Tiny desk soonish/next month also great, I wonder what he played and if he did an old song. That should be a very cool vibe for him rn esp with the current band
Maybe one faster SG song, one slower one and um... take pills or song for Ariel?

Yeah Take Pills is about prescription antidepressants
That was my first thought when seeing the title 50mg too, but I'm much more familiar with prescription drugs than recreational ones so I dunno

Just biking in to agree that this album is pretty much perfect. My only complaint is the placement of Anywhere but Here. I think it is just the spoken word just really throws me. I also don't see any other place for the song because after this, the flow is perfect.
Absolute victory for Noah and Josh and everyone involved in bringing this to life. It is brilliant stuff. Cheers.

im not super sure either but 50mg would be a pretty big dose of thc right? or at least like. big enough to not be a regular/daily dose. for what that's worth (nothing)
but yeah Praise is main one that springs to mind for Tiny Desk. Ferry keeps growing too tho... Praise, Ferry and Take Pills for TD, I'm calling it. Obviously want them all tho there's like at least 8 incredible songs on this album, 7 minimum. I haven't had that much ratio of songs I love on a panda LP since Tomboy almost certainly (reaper if you count all EP tracks maybe...)

Been having stronger emotional reactions with repeated listens. That closing trilogy is deeply cathartic.

Really would love it if the EP for this one had an official release of Song for Ariel but feels like guys eyes will always be the only studio version we get

that would be awesome, some of the additions he's put into the song over the years whenever he plays it live take it to a new level for me. Its been cool watching one song take all these different forms over the years. I could see it staying a live treat though.
The fact that they've worked on recording another version of Never Ending Game Remix is what's got me most excited, id love to hear the live version they have been playin as a studio recorded track. such a cool style and heavy groove.
This is all to say, if he does release an EP to accompany the record like he did with PBVSGR, ill be stoked for it. and then whatevers not on that hopefully gets included on the Live album, him and deak were talking about in the musician and filmmaker interview. Gettin greedy, but feelin lucky

I liked the Pitchfork review more than usual. Maybe just because it was positive and about one of my favourites. Particularly liked the comment about the album having 'an uneasy relationship with its own lightness'. Sums things up well.
Glad to see people getting around this album!
My favourite track keeps changing which is always a great sign.
Also, I put this on at home yesterday and said something about it being new and all three of my kids were saying stuff like 'No way this is a new album.' 'We feel like we've known these songs for ages.'

GQ piece is one of the best profiles I've read. Haver Currin is great. I think it emphasizes how much all of the guys seem to have a new lease on life at this later stage. They're more active and inspired than ever, and it seems like much of it stems from really strong friendships and relationships. Josh and Brian supporting their friend Doug Shaw with his music output is one example. It's been a really touching time following them all as of late.
Venom's In lyrics kind of evoke the feeling of sucking at Call of Duty to me upon close listen—but I still tear up quite a bit to it at this point. It's the kind of down-on-your-luck song that really cuts deep that's maybe the best since Street Flash.
Noah really is the best at this kind of thing. I remember listening to Sunset for the first time and feeling like I grew up with it in my childhood, screaming along to the lyrics.

Yeah I kinda hate when the closing track is a single. Kinda feels like it spoils the album, but defense works really well on its own. When it came out in October I felt like I could already feel how cathartic it was going to be when the album was taken in as a whole, but I would have loved to have experienced that without having known the song already. I could have held off but that’s impossible for me. I’ve never been able to do that. Mad respect to everyone that does.

aw thanks man it's all good. my post exposed some naivete on my part, I should've framed that as a personal revelation about those songs, not a general one.

I cannot get Just As Well, as a title, to stick to that song in my brain lol. religious bop 4eva
Also I find that song's lyrics the hardest to parse of the bunch, maybe just the least lyrics-forward song, instead dominated by the groove and melody which are fascinating. I think it's about making music, "gonna make it too good to fail".

Lollll on drive back from work today just now I literally had same thought when Just As Well came on. I was like whats this one called again? Anywhere But Here? No lol.
So ya that and track 2 I guess I didn't know the names of til just now. Not really a bad thing but I wonder if Domino didn't pick JAW cuz it's name, surely not...
And ya still don't know the lyrics for that one well.
Also agreed thay Sunset (and most of these) sound like classics from listen #1. To be reductive and dumb af, that's a acid-trip-helping-you-pluck-a-melody-out-of-ether kind of thing, like a melody that always already existed. Pandas super good at that..

O ya ok, cuz he doesn't actually say "just as well" in the song, just "as well". Good for him for making that choice if the rhythm wasn't right and not forcing it. Def seems the vaguely lyrics, the Butcher Baker Candlestick maker of this LP lyrics wise

The majority of the song does seem a bit occluded but one of my favorite lyrics on the record is "I can tell I'm stuck on the inside / Gonna try my luck on the outside." Mostly just for personal reasons, the way it resonates with my life in the past year etc.

Nice catch Canopy404. Havn't been a gamer in many years, but looks like a valid reference. I def get the feeling of an adventure video game when the horns come in on that song. I like how he uses the word "bow" in two ways in the lyrics: 1) bowing after finishing an act, 2) standing at the front of a ship and looking forward to the next chapter in life.

all hail Joe biden's embracing of the LP after he sneak attacked the band with a mid score on either skiffs or IIN even tho they granted his ass an exclusive White House interview. Love his use of the word "indulgent" and his self consciousness re Ends Meet sounding like an uncle gone wild.
it's ok AND Joe biden approval??? best review since PP/MPP 1?!?!? We're back baby!!!!!
(brace yourselves for a LOT of 4chan-ers showing up in droves)

its so weird ... do ppl still fuck with youtube content section and joey B? i remember back in like 2018 there was an influx of kids that fucked with cal chuchesta bc of his rap reviews, and i think hes had memes and react content and his interviews that have kept him in the spotlight. for what its worth, its also reviewing well on rateyourmusic. i'm really surprised that people are so open to this, not that its bad, its awesome, and its def more accessible for people, but it is also a lot of the same shit theyve been doing for the past so many years that before people just rejected? maybe there is more of a "listener-perceived" dedication to song structure? sounds like ole panda bear to me. maybe its striking when the iron is hot,. bc people are fucking with indie shit again. theres a very very angry 14 year old that lurks in the back of my head that cries for several reasons thinking "wow, people are allowed to like this project now" but thats nonsense but i needed to verbalize it to let it free like a bird into a blackhole
i say all this to eventually say: i dont really give a shit, take a step and wade out to the ocean etc etc but its interesting to think about since ac has been so detracted for the last decade. i hope panda bear makes so much money and i hope that not all of it goes to gacha pulls and weed thats called some shit like "dookie blah blah opium runtz"

I get what yr saying but will say Idk if we need to dredge up that age old convo of: do people rlly care about Joe biden and the fork still?? Like ya none of us do but it's something to talk about I guess and the reality is that kind of shit sadly is a good thing for panda in terms of new exposure potentially. But yes they're all horrible it's all useless, insert Carotts lyrics
Anyway ya this album is great I honestly do get why this is their most accessible thing in a while. Reset was poppy but I listened back and some of the loops are probably hard for normies to chill with and his voice is not recorded so cleanly here probably so as to blend with the vintage loops better. This has a beautiful sheen to it, ty deakin

This album is incredible. Noah and Josh hit Elegy for Noah Lou out of the park. I never thought I'd hear an AC related song like that. I'm simply floored by how good this album is.
It's hard to pick my favorite tracks but here you go:
Praise
50mg
Just as Well
Venom's In
Elegy for Noah Lou

Yes, exactly. Totally agree with you, for me it's the core of the album. Infact it surprise me listen the super positive review of Joe Biden but at the same time he doesn't talk about this aspect and in general the theme, the story, the background of the album. I mean it's a huge part here, of the listening experience too... It doesn't work at the same time even with the shuffle. It's a story..a heartbreaking story .. Defence it's just a light of hope...it ends very bad.

Just wanted to appreciate that they made a special colored vinyl for independent record stores only. I've made some of my closest friendships at record stores and always feel at home there. Would be a sad day to see them close down like movie theaters have in California. Also, when you trade in old records for store credit to get new records it gives that utopia feeling of money not existing. :^))
