The fan commentary around this album is hilarious and has given me a lot of fun over the past month or so.

When people use the 'it's a grower' argument for Slasher House, they're probably trying to fool themselves into thinking the $15 they spent on this couldn't have been better spent elsewhere. So much great music gets released every other week from all sorts of bands and yet some people fixate themselves on an idealised Avey Tare who in their minds can do no wrong.

Getting used to a sound doesn't make the sound good. If I work in an office block with heavy drill work going on outside for days on end, yes, eventually it'll get less irritating to meand I will get used to it - but that doesn't make it good. Slasher House is an album people so desperately want to like that they'll defend it to the death; they'll argue that you need to listen to it a hundred times before it sinks in just to shy away from the fact that it simply isn't a good record.

All this bullshit about 'you have to appreciate Avey Tare/Animal Collective on a higher level', 'nobody seems to understand what Avey is trying to do' or 'you need to let these songs hit you at a subconscious level' are pretentious excuses people make in between sucking off Dave Portner's cock.

FRIENDS ^____^?

The fact you think people actually try and force themselves to like something is hilarious to me. Is your life really so bleak you think others live this way? Trudging on day by day; just forcing themselves to "tolerate" life?

I think it's more likely that people actually just like the music, my man.

Art shouldn't be able to be instantly processed should it? Isn't that sort of the point of it? Critics didn't like Kid A at first did they? Nobody would understand a Shakespeare play upon first reading would they?

I was just watching Real Estate perform on David Letterman, and boy was it hilarious..

Reason why I'm here is cause their keyboard player looked like a cross between Davey Avey McTare and Danial Tosh.Oski

Sgt Joe is dead right, the best music is that which you like instantly, like jingles or music which sounds like something else you already like. It's the same with everything in life. If you don't like it straight away, don't waste your time pretending to develop your experience, that's why I only eat chicken nuggets. I remember going to the Villa Borghese and seeing Raphael's Deposition and seeing it for what it is, immediately: a load of shite. I stood round looking at all the fucking pseuds, putting on that gaze of rapturous wonder and I knew they just didn't have the balls to see it for what it is. I remember some c*** talking about leitmotifs in Bach's organ work and I just threw up on his face, the fucking disingenuous prick. There's too many notes, it's obviously shit. When will people just stop pretending to enjoy things which they obviously don't, just because they're one-eyed c****. They should see the world like I do. My mummy loved me.

There's a difference between taking the time to deconstruct/absorb something that's complex or subtle to appreciate it and simply cultivating a fetish for somehing that's mediocre by repeatidly beating it in to your head until it sticks. Sgt. Joe is suggesting that people here are doing the latter with slasher house, and yeah that's definitely way off base.

Whether you like the album or not the point remains that the thing is dense, and it's going to take a little bit of time for people to make heads or tails of it. This results in a "grower" for a lot of people and, while I personally didn't love the album even after it all sank in, I can still see why a lot of people would. If Sgt. Joe were talking about something that was way more immediate and accessible then he might have a point, but as it stands the dick levels of his post are pretty unwarranted.

In regards to the "either you like it immediately or don't waste your time on it" type of mindset, I disagree.

I was such a noob in highschool and said stupid things like "radiohead are just trying hard to be different and that's why I don't like it". Like I checked out Kid A and just assumed that, because I didn't really get it yet, that it was bad and pretentious or something. Everything in its right place just sounded generally bad and unappealing to me because at that time in my life, I had no connection to that type of music. I had no worries or real problems back then(still barely do) and so intense but maybe somewhat depressing music like that just seemed lame to me and trying too hard or something.

I guess I just think that depending on different parts of your life, even changes that occur over the span of less than a month, can totally effect how you view music and why you like it.

All of the early dirty projectors ballad type stuff used to be my favorite music ever, but then for some reason when I wasn't feeling as down and things were changing in my life I didn't really want to listen to it that often anymore. I still think those songs are genius and do listen from time to time, but people change and I don't see why that wouldn't effect your taste and listening habits.

Don't know why I found this amusing. Any who ...

I don't know if that Sargent guy is right because let me give an example we can all relate to. Many of ACs earlier tracks I couldn't connect to at first for some reason. But over time , as I listened more , I found the connection and their early work is some of my favorite to date. So it's were not tricking ourselves into liking this music but more understanding their ideas and philosophies. I haw a feeling we won't see too much of that guy ... How sad : /

Wow I really enjoyed reading that article. I'm quite a film buff so I think my favorite interviews with AC are when they talk about films. I was geeking out the whole time reading that. I totally watched a ton of horror movies on the USA network when I was a kid too. Especially 'Up All Night' and 'MonsterVision' with Joe Bob Briggs.

I thought Avey still smoked and all but had no idea the scope of marijuana and lsd use in his youth. Very interesting to see him speaking so openly about it for once. Must be that LA weed scene.

YESSS, The Saragossa Manuscript. One of my favorites ever, and the music in it is also this weird combination of folk and electronic by Penderecki, it's amazing all the way through. It blows my mind that Avey sampled it, I'll have to watch it again.

feel like somewhere, maybe ca1 or something, he made it sound like he used to trip a lot in middle school, which seems pretty crazy to me. (maybe if we feed middle schoolers acid they'll all start making perfect music as adults?). wish i was childhood friends with avey so i could trip, and watch horror movies, and make noise music

yea I remember him saying that when he was 14 he smoked a nutmeg joint dipped in embalming fluid or something, which I think is pretty funny. He also mentioned sucking the nitrous out of reddi-whip cans in his fridge a bunch when he was a kid.

^o man that's just the endorsement i needed. might try reddi whip now

decided that roses is the best longer song, and daisy is the best short one. and i get what Avey said abt how this is more a collection of songs than down there. DT is definitely an album's album, but this is so strong just by each individual track, and almost seems like a singles comp

when lonnie holley opened for deerhunter in brooklyn, bradford jammed on a track with him.

this was likely not "written" at all as lonnie mostly just jams on something, and whoever he's playing with just goes along with it. that video is great though.

via clayton's chordage and playing it now I see that ascender has this cool chord progression that literally ascends the scale kind of, and comes down and then goes higher and it might be why that part is so exciting, its during the "where would we speak with... wanna get out and ride, take us on a whole new ride" part. so its cool that the word play in the title kinda refers to that

and then the 2nd parts' chorus "spirit of all the world," the vocal melody totally descends
