I think The Outlaw is a great song, one of my favorites from the album, even though I don't really care for the "the outlaw is the future" moment either. The rest is fantastic though.

What's wrong with 'the outlaw is the future' moment? I like that yelling. I like how the whole song is. It's like hopeless all the way before that moment and with this yelling it becomes life-affirming. Especially with that drum-break before the 2nd portion of 'the outlaw is the future'.

yeah what the heck, all these reviews are acting like its this terrible thing to yell. one of less enjoyable parts for me, but i can still understand how people would like it

I don't like that part either. Kind of ruins the song for me! LOVE THIS ALBUM THOUGH!!

Jeremy's drumming on pretty much all of these songs is one of my favorite aspects of this album. It all sounds super unique while just perfectly serving the momentum of each song. I wish it was mixed a little louder on some songs tho.

It's not so long ago that people were longing for the Avey scream, after the mellow MPP/FBK/Down There period. Thank God he's yelling and screaming again, gives some dynamism to his performance again. And now people are whingeing about the screams? Noob Saibot.

No matter what the thing is, there are always people who like the way it is and people who don't. Different things click with different people, it depends on the mood for the same person even. E. g. I couldn't stand Mercury Man, like CHz would be better without it, while for some it was the best track of the record. Now it's okay for me.

I love the screaming part of That It Won't Grow but that part of the Outlaw is easily my least favorite moment of the album and I haven't been able to get over it. Just rubs me the wrong way all around.

Can you guys imagine Slasher Flicks covering Thriller by MJ?

For some reason just thought of that, and I think it would be amazing.

My two cents on The Outlaw screamy part. I don't mind it. I can't not like it. Normally I'm not into screamo, but Avey has always been an exception. I love the shuffling, spastic drums, love how Deradoorian harmonizes "Future", and, of course, love that phaser.

I love Avey's screaming, I have no problem with that. My not being into the "outlaw is the future" moment has nothing to do with the fact that he's yelling during that part, it has more to do with the melody and the words themselves. I don't hate it, it just doesn't really do anything for me. I don't find it cathartic like those kinds of moments usually are. I'm glad others enjoy it though.

The fan commentary around this album is hilarious and has given me a lot of fun over the past month or so.
When people use the 'it's a grower' argument for Slasher House, they're probably trying to fool themselves into thinking the $15 they spent on this couldn't have been better spent elsewhere. So much great music gets released every other week from all sorts of bands and yet some people fixate themselves on an idealised Avey Tare who in their minds can do no wrong.
Getting used to a sound doesn't make the sound good. If I work in an office block with heavy drill work going on outside for days on end, yes, eventually it'll get less irritating to meand I will get used to it - but that doesn't make it good. Slasher House is an album people so desperately want to like that they'll defend it to the death; they'll argue that you need to listen to it a hundred times before it sinks in just to shy away from the fact that it simply isn't a good record.
All this bullshit about 'you have to appreciate Avey Tare/Animal Collective on a higher level', 'nobody seems to understand what Avey is trying to do' or 'you need to let these songs hit you at a subconscious level' are pretentious excuses people make in between sucking off Dave Portner's cock.

You need to prioritize your life a little. Some people just like the record. Don't sweat it.
Oh, and welcome to CA.
This record gets an 8/10 from me! I'm in agreement with those who say that The Outlaw overstays it's welcome, and I think Duplex Trip is completely forgettable (can't recall it at all).

yeah lol, if you've never had the experience of an album growing on you over time or needing time to make sense i don't know where ya been. that's an essential part of lots of great music and especially a lot of ac.
this album actually only took me 2-3 listens max though to really love, and new things are still revealing themselves to me and the parts i like most are shifting around to things i didn't like as much before
it makes sense though that a chaotic album like this could need some more time for the brain to make sense of

im actually really surprised this is getting panned by critics as much as it is. as a whole, most of the songs feel super catchy and hook-oriented, which i think is something a lot of people found missing from DT and CHZ. A lot of the songwriting this time around is almost reminiscent of SJ-era Dave, so it's really weird to me that so many people aren't liking it.
also, was Down There this divisive when it first came out? it seems that we're pretty evenly split on who's enjoying Slasher House and who isn't, and i can't quite remember if we were as evenly split on Down There.

I'm pretty sure it was fairly divisive when it came out? I think I remember some people saying it was pretty boring. And at least in my experience, it didn't sink in till about the 3rd or 4th listen.
I'm surprised about the reddit AMA, I never thought Avey would do that! I need to think up something to ask him...

regarding the album's critics, i was wondering what itd be like if somehow this was some artists' debut album, and not avey tare's. maybe if it was some random new artist they'd b able to see how its good.. I feel like since st/mppish there's always this inevitable standard for how poppy or hifi his stuff should be now or something, like they forgot that half their discography is noise

Sgt Joe is dead right, the best music is that which you like instantly, like jingles or music which sounds like something else you already like. It's the same with everything in life. If you don't like it straight away, don't waste your time pretending to develop your experience, that's why I only eat chicken nuggets. I remember going to the Villa Borghese and seeing Raphael's Deposition and seeing it for what it is, immediately: a load of shite. I stood round looking at all the fucking pseuds, putting on that gaze of rapturous wonder and I knew they just didn't have the balls to see it for what it is. I remember some c*** talking about leitmotifs in Bach's organ work and I just threw up on his face, the fucking disingenuous prick. There's too many notes, it's obviously shit. When will people just stop pretending to enjoy things which they obviously don't, just because they're one-eyed c****. They should see the world like I do. My mummy loved me.
