while simultaneously returning to the Bear's precious roots. There is exactly enough Sung Tongs-era tuning strummed on a timid guitar in harmony with weird future computer shit to make Bouys what should be a classic, career defining middle-album: mana for new and old Panda Bear fans, and more to wit: a tease for the long and satisfying second half of a career to come.

Its honest, its tight, its well produced, and Panda's best instrument: his fucking angelic voice gets exquisite attention. I wish it was longer, but I wish that because I am a selfish piece of shit, not because it is too short.

9.3/10

This is excellent, captured the p4k essence well

why are they saying it's his 4th album. Young Prayer exist and the self titled too.

Hope someone has a boot from that show !

That's actually a very good review and sums up a number of my own thoughts. It's a very personal record that perhaps resonates more with me because I'm old. For some young bastard who thinks Greaper is his best album, I can understand the disappointment but I hope they regret their stupidity when they're in the damn grave.

im not young - not a old fat too - but i much prefer the greaper material, it goes to so much different places, the production is so detailed and crafted, i can still hear new sonds there to this day. he couldnt be better as a songwriter, making songs around classical music (cancer/lonely wanderer), minimal structures (selfish gene/sequencial), bangers (ctys/mr.noah), signing with himself (boys latin), experimental shit (principe) and im not even talking about faces, paradise, untying... so much stuff, i love that album! i guess ignorance is really a bless haha

it was also an incredible era full with amazing videos, websites, gifs.. it felt huge!

buoys is a fantastic album but i do feel is missing a key component: atmosphere. the only song that get some sense of background is inner monologue, and for a guy that once used skateboard noises to construct a song around, thats sad. I actually feel that buoys is very similar in terms of production style with painting with.. quick songs with no much reverb and very clean intrumentals.

I ageee lucas.. greaper was the shit.... but im glad hes trying new things even if its far from perfect.. its better to have something different than nothing at all.. plus who knows how he'll build on this sound.

Putting aside the number rating (which is a schtick if anything) I found the p4k review surprising. It highlights two important things for me 1) Why this album is quickly becoming one of my fav Panda Bear albums and 2) why I’ve felt awkward/hesitant trying to listen to this album with anyone else in the room.

I also think it’s the lack of atmosphere on these songs that I appreciate so much. The review described the guitar as disembodied—a concept that helps explain something for me: despite how isolated this project’s vibe is, there’s this (maybe only semi-plausible) hope that breaches the isolation to connect to the listener.

having been that young bastard circa 2014-2017 I deeply respect and know this take, despite not yet being dead.

I'm glad they gave the reviewing job to Mark--he has been an AC lover at Pitchfork since forever. Pretty much agree with the review, but wish Token got more lovin.

Damn greaper was a time--I got so lost in my own world when I first heard BL and CTYS. Those shows were epic and I was (why did i fly) sooooo high.

lucas i think your idea about this as a "foreground" album is kind of interesting! the lyrics, the vocals, the music, everything is much closer to the front on most of the tracks than ever before. it really distinguishes it from some the last 3 albums (hasn't he grouped them together as a trilogy?) but also means it's completely fine to prefer one or the other. just don't discount it for that reason imo

I agree about the pitchfork review.. I try to stay away from reviews in general these days but my curiosity got the best of me.. the notion of "better times that might not come" (paraphrase) articulated a certain quality of the album well

the lack of a physical atmosphere really doesn’t matter in this album to me. Really as long as the melody is good in a song is what actually makes it good music for me. If the melody isn’t good it has to be some amazing textures

man, I'm having major cognitive dissonance with the new song and the critiques

respect y'alls opinions and perspectives (and also shout out to moop for abstaining for a week damn!) but I'm really vibing it. I guess elements of the song sound kinda familiar, I am reminded of
Spoiler: show
that justin vernon/wisconsin super group Gayngs a little bit at first glance
but really find it as a cool familiar but also future facing Panda Bear song
jerry wonder wrote:

in light of this let's imagine what sick covers Panda Bear could do that would be awesome
