Even if that's true, there's plenty of other people who will find out about Deakin's music through other means. Sure a it's ok does garner more attention for releases on that website, but it's just a blip compared to all other music media outlets/ streaming services/ word of mouth ways in which people find out about new music. I would show "unassuming music fans" a little more respect

I agree with you that ranking art misses the point, but I also don't think people are assholes for not loving an artist's work. I quote my man Deakin, who quotes his man, The Dude
Spoiler: show
I don't intend to be sanctimonious, but I guess it's coming off that way

id say that most unassuming music Guy's follow p4k and Joe Biden..but its mostly me being salty haha. and the quote is taken from a rap, so "assholes" probably sounded better than "people" or "dudes" lolol. i feel u tho. im still a little burned after the painting with review...that shit stung lol. i just have this paranoia ppl try to hate on AC for watever reason and these reviews and shet just add fuel to the fyre. ultimately that shouldnt matter to me lol, i love wat there doing along with a million other ppl haha :D

you guys are funny, 7.6 is a good score (for whatever it's worth) and the review was largely positive outside of all the stupid shit he said about deakin

As far as the Keep Cassingle goes, I believe Own Mind, Elastik, Island Chase, 2Friends, the TTG song, and that 2014 DJ set song are all possible. When I saw Deakin at the 2010 New Museum show, I only really remember what Wide Eyed and Good House sounded like, so I'm not really sure which leftover song I'm most excited for

I'm curious, someone mentioned there already being two versions of Wide Eyed? Was it on the radio program with Pulleys or does a second version appear somewhere else??

There's the 2010 Wide Eyed that Deakin played with Tim DeWitt (he played it once solo in 2011)
The one that's on CHz (as well as all the live versions)
And the acoustic one after CHz was released

I know what you mean - that's how I read it initially, too. On second reading, though, what he said - "...and his perceived expendability is further underscored by the fact the band’s most successful record to date—2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion..." [emphasis mine] - seems more directed at those who might view Deakin as a non-core member of the band, or someone not "essential" to the band's greatest success (the MPP line). With the Beatles line, perhaps he was intending to draw a comparison to the most underappreciated member of the respective bands, even if, in reality, Deakin seems to be more of a George analog. So that first paragraph may just be addressing perceptions, you know? And based off of the tone in how he talks about the music, I'd say he's arguing that it's a pretty good record.

"...none of Dibb’s out-of-pocket supporters should feel short-changed. Because whatever anxiety Dibb felt about not following through on his Kickstarter campaign has been channeled into a wonderful little album.... poignant portrait of an artist regaining their confidence one song at a time.... restoring some of the patience and mystique...."

Idk, not sure why I feel the need to defend the review, but maybe people are reading a tone that was unintended? I felt it was pretty positive overall.

How hard is it to count to 5 really? Why do people seem so set on undermining this guy's role in the band?

i emailed him about it and he edited it back - he had written a draft with "5" and someone changed it in editing to "4" (probably not counting campfire songs, stuart guessed), but yeah we and he thought 5 too, so now the review reflects that.

also, i agree deakin is like the George of the group, if we're going to make that comparison, but I guess maybe that's just Berman's opinion? Wasn't worth "correcting" him over, since it is a matter of opinion as opposed to the number of albums Deakin played on.

Overall I think it was a pretty decent review, probably a fair score and around what I expected from the site, though of course we have our own opinions :)

Also interesting that he compares Good House to Spiritualized, when Sonic Boom produced that track :P

Thanks heaps man

It's funny because it's like "oh he's playing an acoustic guitar so it's like Sung Tongs, ironically an album Josh doesn't appear on!" when it could have been compared to Campfire Songs fairly easily?

I think the sound reminds me most of Screens though, but less spooky and more warm

I think it largely falls on us to either not even notice p4k reviews or to not talk about them at all or act like they matter. Not trying to dog anyone cuz lord knows I'm guilty of it, but I think there's this illusion that their reviews will effect anything other than ppl like us on blogs. I kno it comes from a good place, but the way p4ks perceived clout has literally infected so many music forums is so weird. If we just stopped mentioning them or giving them any attention u will realize how much they aren't worth sweating over. Go there if u want but don't act like they're the npr of indie music, the only reason it feels that way is cuz so many music forumers/commenters (not just here obvs) act like they are. So sorry to keep posting anymore on them but this will b the last time I ever mention p4k reviews like its a thing to do. Let's wake up in world where no one gives a shit about their inconsistent writing and deeply fucked number ranks... Ok I'm done now 4evr srry tldr

There's always big factual errors and weird unnecessary ad hominem digs at people. Maybe they introduced u to Ac on the first place but other blogs/forums will gladly introduce u to the same sort of bands in the future. P4k isn't relevant.. It's not 2009 anymore.. Let's move on (sorry, preachy)

Ok back to deakin...

Lol ya that's prbly more common at this point than vice versa. Idk at the end of the day it's not a big deal at all but it's just strange to see so many forums treating their review "drops" like they're as important as the album itself, like how'd we get to that point? What if we just decided stereogum or Tmt was the new p4k? It's so arbitrary... Ok done for real

Yea, this is a bummer. When this track first came out, I remember thinking the vocals sounded really good. I think someone earlier said that this track (2Friends) was the same that is used on the Malian Routes fan-made compilation. I'm not sure who made that, but maybe if we can find that out, we can see if they have the original file saved somewhere. In the meantime, Dance Avey Dance has a recording up from that show

Malian Routes is still up and you can get a free download. I'm not sure if the version of 2Friends is the same as the one in the p4k article, but it's there as track 9:

12/10/10 at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in NYC. Glad there's good audio of it now. That show was in a sweet space with some cool backdrop visuals

Also just to clear things up, Prince Rama does not play in that recording. They were just the opening act

I went to the local record store today and when I walked through the door i sensed his presence...

yeah, that's right. THE PRESENCE OF DEAKIN.

everybody was freaking out and there was even this one guy on acid who was burning all the other records because they have been useless ever since sleep cycle was released.

nah, not really. it felt good to hear it there, tho.
