The Keep email said "new music" (though I guess technically Sleep Cycle is still pretty new also). Really hoping it's new new jams!

pretty sure it's music we've yet to hear
also keep in mind that sleep cycle was supposed to come out around late January/early February, with the shoes coming out in April. the songs on the bonus cassette were meant to be heard after the release of sleep cycle, which would be a weird time to release just am as a single imo. here's hoping it's island chase

doubtful. & im ok with that because the two versions that exist are already good enough for me. I'm thinking it may be something like an interlude track (like seed song) + 2 friends

Honestly, a 7.6 isnt bad for pitchfork. The album was genuinely praised in the review. Compared to like campfire songs, which got a 7.2, a 7.6 is pretty reasonable. Mind you, I personally would have rated this release at least a 9, but I'm not part of the team over at pitchfork

I honestly don't even know which album they decided to ignore this time because they said "10 official albums".
Campfire Songs
Here Comes the Indian
Feels
Strawberry Jam
Centipede Hz
How hard is it to count to 5 really? Why do people seem so set on undermining this guy's role in the band?

Okay okay I like the "Footy" drum imagery though. The review definitely got less bad when they started talking about the actual release.

Josh “Deakin” Dibb is the Ringo of Animal Collective—the member of a revered psychedelic-pop quartet that gets the least amount of love.

as usual, anything they have written unrelated to the music is utter shite, but the review itself isn't terrible. agree with hashman that it's super annoying that they cannot even get which records he has been on correct, even though they've reviewed them all but oddsac!

C'mon now. Let's not make these next couple of pages devoted to bashing p4k. The Painting With thread already had enough of that. Nothing good comes out of continually giving one website's opinion so much attention/criticism

alright so the beatles members comparisons may be silly, but if we're playing along I feel like Deakin is pretty obviously the George of the group. The guitarist whose impressive songwriting abilities became apparent later into the bands career. And if Deakin keeps releasing music like Sleep Cycle, his solo output will be many people's favorites (just like Harrison's is mine, despite great albums from Lennon and McCartney). and I don't know how accurate this is, but he even appears to be the more spiritual of the group, like George.

Even if that's true, there's plenty of other people who will find out about Deakin's music through other means. Sure a it's ok does garner more attention for releases on that website, but it's just a blip compared to all other music media outlets/ streaming services/ word of mouth ways in which people find out about new music. I would show "unassuming music fans" a little more respect

I agree with you that ranking art misses the point, but I also don't think people are assholes for not loving an artist's work. I quote my man Deakin, who quotes his man, The Dude
I don't intend to be sanctimonious, but I guess it's coming off that way

People already shitting on Pitchfork when the review could've been a lot worse tbh
though I'd agree that Beatles/AC comparisons are super dumb and reductionist, makes zero sense. they're way too different to compare the band members one-to-one

I totally agree. Like, really? The oft overlooked guitarist who quietly wrote his own songs in the shadows of two prolific band mates before releasing a late career triumph inspired by his spiritual travels abroad isn't George Harrison? He's
Ringo?
It's probably best to avoid Beatles comparisons altogether, but if you're going to go down that road at least don't miss the mark by 100 miles.
Otherwise the review was fine and 7.00064 or whatever is a totally respectable score.

the review wasn't that bad, beatles bs aside. 7.6 is a fair score I'd say, I would have probably given it an "8"

i emailed him about it and he edited it back - he had written a draft with "5" and someone changed it in editing to "4" (probably not counting campfire songs, stuart guessed), but yeah we and he thought 5 too, so now the review reflects that.
also, i agree deakin is like the George of the group, if we're going to make that comparison, but I guess maybe that's just Berman's opinion? Wasn't worth "correcting" him over, since it is a matter of opinion as opposed to the number of albums Deakin played on.
Overall I think it was a pretty decent review, probably a fair score and around what I expected from the site, though of course we have our own opinions
Also interesting that he compares Good House to Spiritualized, when Sonic Boom produced that track
