The only reason for an underwhelming reaction from a pre-established fan base is a lack of beautiful melody. Especially for a fan base like us that loves anything- weird, slow, ugly- as long as it’s beautiful, it’s obvious that TR just doesn’t contain good song-writing

hm idk... I think a lot of people like plenty of the melodies, but ya doesn't seem to be the focus... in fact rhythm and melody seem to be things the band went out of there way to NOT focus much on, with some exceptions

I remember my initial reaction feeling a lil confused as to why it seems like the lyrics on Hair Cutter are so much more written then almost anywhere else.

eh, idk. Album's great but Meeting of the Waters and Music Box surrounding it seem way more easy to appreciate it. Cool weird lil era for the band tho... the Bridge b/w PW and the Bridge to Quiet/Skiffs era

In terms of both audio and video Tangerine Reef seems so much less varied than ODDSAC, although I haven't listened more than once so my memory is pretty fuzzy

It is less varied but I think quite intentionally so.

Oddsac is all about the disorienting and alarming contrasts.

TR is all about this mournful, meditative state. Suspending this moment of marveling at the reef’s strange beauty whilst grieving its loss.

if you bring in an innate fascination and awe about the deep ocean floor, even just in the abstract, the album is generous. you get to immerse yourself, safe but still feeling sensations of a place inhospitable to humans. dave guides you with some barebones melodies, and i like how this scarily wide open, inhuman place is used to illustrate the human feeling of melancholy. the human side of it is one-note (for example hair cutter and buxom are not super distinct from each other in terms of melody; a conventional record would not include both of these songs) but i find it resonant in the context of the oceanic setting as a place where early life figured itself out and split off in subtle iterations, and drifted semi aimlessly like dave's vocals do in a lot of spots. the simplicity of the songs keeps you immersed in primordial nature.

i don't think it's for everyone. many fans may never appreciate it. and it's not necessarily one to revisit over and over. but for the record i think it's perfect in all its boring, suffocating glory.

It kind of ironic that TR is the visual album that got released separately though, as it clearly needs it’s original context

Jake and Me is one of the saddest songs they've ever done. It gives me this totally hopeless feeling

Awesome piano cover!

I don’t see Peanut Butter Hearts fitting on Skiffs 2. Too dancey/loop/beat driven. Considering it wasn’t in the official Music Box (where it also wouldn’t have fit) will we ever see it again?

Really wishing they would do more physical live releases
Avey's mothlight show is such a good recording and would fit so perfectly on three sides like:

A
-Midnight Special
-Sew Happy
-Taken Boy
B
-Eyes On Eyes
-Disc One
-Betty Was a Doctor
-Uncle Donut
C
-What's The Goodside
-Red Light Water Show
-Cemeteries

There's so many great shows I'd love to just chill out with and spin in my living room

Jealous of King Gizzard's bootlegger series... so many participants making cool releases, except I've barely bought any because their live recordings mostly sound the same. Too bad AC's fanbase is probably too small (and less into vinyl in that way) for that to be viable

Listening to Meet the Light Child for the first time in years. I forgot how much I absolutely loved this song. I love the part around 2:50-3:00 in where it sounds like cheering, applause and someone writhing around in the background. The first time I heard this when I was in my late teens it was probably the most absurd and unfathomable music experience I could have ever imagined. And yet, it retained some sort of amazing charm and ability to build as a song and tell a story. It's entirely unlike anything I've heard to this day, even among the band themselves.

Oh yeah Meet the Light Child is one of their best songs for sure. It's easily my favorite track on Danse. There's almost something oddly jazzy about it at certain moments? Like not actually jazz music but it evokes it in some way, similar to some of the Skiffs songs.

No, but I remember the first time I heard Good House was on TTG because everyone was freaking tf out.

Also is it me or did Avey bring back the instrumental/rhythm/melody from Crumbling Land on side 2 of TTG? I always hear it but no one I have pointed it out to agrees.

....listening for it I will timestamp when I find it. I know it's in here. Ah! 7:54. Sing Crumbling Land over this, it works too fucking well.

Also forgot I sampled something from.their stems for a beat I did forever ago

I'm so bored of pseudo-journalistic narrativizing replacing actual music criticism. It's like everyone is writing a Rolling Stone cover feature. The attempt to tie in the band's biographies with these specious HCTI observations I particularly did not like.
wrote:
Structurally, though, these two modes of the record never fully mesh, with the album’s spacious middle span jarringly contrasted by frantic passages on either side. But individual songs on this release still stand out,

Sounds good as a soundbite on a YouTube music reviewing channel, doesn't actually engage with the material or explain what it's saying!

agree, found the writing on Ark and Danse to be particularly atrocious. though it was shared on a FB group and from what it appears this seems like something a fan wrote on their own time and pitched to Paste, so I'm honestly just more confused why they decided to publish it
