Thank you.
It’d be boringly meta for Noah to constantly write solo songs about the songs he writes with other people. AC fandom seems to color literary analysis as a prophetic yet othorodox tool that untangles the threads of AC’s fate while ignoring the poetic and archetypal associations imbued in their writings. The way AC writes music is rich in image; read their lyrics the same.
That’s a good point.
I rarely think their songs are just about one thing or one autobiographical moment and I doubt many people do either. Literal analysis is just one way of looking at it and sometimes that leads to theorizing about their subjective experiences.
I find the way they annunciate words and the images the lyrics evoke just as important, but it’s much harder to discuss that stuff on a fan forum. Literal analysis is much easier

I posted this in the lyrics section, but since peeps be talking of the lyrics here I thought I'd copy it into here. Here is my take on the lyrics.
Panda Bears lyrics have all seemed like cryptic alchemical formulas to me. He is consistently taking something lowly like trash, then alluding to something more precious. I've seen it in numerous past songs, but it is also all over this EP. Part of the math for example:
You're an effigy
And a wrapper in a plastic bag
We're all dieties
Washed up in a sewage freebird
Where was I
A flowered shrine
A cussing bum
A crystal shine
In a pool of scum
A dream so real
That your vision's gone
An animal
A mineral
A vegetable
An abacus
Part of the Sophia myth of the gnostics, is that you have to look for her in the dung heap. That the divine is constantly right before your eyes in the unlikeliest places as the trash and waste. This was a huge theme in the ideas of the alchemist, turning shit into gold. Like the scene from holy mountain where the guy turns his own shit into gold. Also the animal, mineral vegetable part is on this old alchemical illustration I came across in a book I have,
Nod to the folks
Keeping us close
Up to the gods
Evens and odds
Refining ore
Anyone's joke
Wriggling to be
Free from the yoke
Here we have mention of parents (parental conditioning), mention of gods, refining ore (turning shit to gold), and then struggling to break from the the yoke (struggling to break outside of parental conditionings or just wordy conditionings all together or human condition).
Hid from the light
In a garbage can
Another reference to finding divinity within the trash. There are also more references in this song.
Take a chance
And try to
Break away
Another reference of trying to break free in sunset. Also the lyrics to lying in the grass really allude to these ideas. Here are some lyrics I pulled from lying in the grass:
There’s a way through fogs as long as there’s a light to discover (it)
It’s a gut that fears all things unknown
and a link within the brain you know
Not a shame to say the instincts there
but a virtue to deny the bait
Know the cause and move to gauze and deftly
tratar o sangue (clean up the blood)
In the law there’s room to move
as there’s a need to uncover it
As a choker sucks, let’s sift through the muck and lift this dingy veil
same old tale
Get mixed in this crippling fixture
Try and approach the hidden mixtures
Get mixed in this crippling fixture
Try and approach the hidden picture it
For a misplaced stash, let’s search through the trash and right this ignorant lurch
wicked urge
Like a twisted stick, let’s dig through the sick and find a level space
Lots of ideas about moving past the minds instincts or conditionings, also finding light through fog and illusion/ hidden picture/ hidden mixtures, digging through the trash/ sick. These are all blatant alchemical ideas. Also I remember Noah talking about PBMGR and the grim reaper as the concept of an agent of change, transmutation and not literal death. The whole concept of that album plays out like that, going through life struggles, going through a mental break down, and being reborn into clarity through tragedy. Also take pills can be seen through this same lens. It's a song about him realizing he doesn't need to be on anti-depressants anymore, that he is stronger without them, he's stronger if he faces his mind, and learns how to transmute the pain himself.
I guess what I'm trying to say with all of this, is that his lyrics are often very cryptic and can often seem random or nonsensical, or allude to so many different things. However, with some understanding of alchemical or mythological symbolism, the lyrics start to make sense and take on meaning. I remember also reading that Noah majored in religion, which leads me to believe that, though he may not be dogmatically religious, the symbolism of myth and religion mean something very personal to him. Anyway, would love to discuss this more!

I wrote some lengthy stuff about Taoism when he brought out Greaper. This new material seems on a very similar keel. The animal, vegetable, mineral point above is very Taoist, in fact. I remember having a great debate with some lad on here about Taoism, too. I wonder where he went to.

good stuff
I too usually think about Noah's relationship to religion. I'm guessing he's agnostic or even atheistic about religious teachings and dogma, but probably finds the archetypes useful. The fact that I know he follows Sam Harris on Twitter and is probably familiar with Richard Dawkins also influences how I interpret these lyrics. I've also dissected his songs by using Buddhist or, like Stan mentioned, Taoist principles as reference.
I remember reading a Greaper interview about him talking about Hesse's Siddhartha as well being influenced by The Matrix. All this stuff seems related to me.
I've never thought about his lyrics from an alchemical perspective though. But if alchemy talks about deliberately looking at reality in a completely different point of view or how changing certain ways of thinking can act as a catalyst for the way we understand our lives, then I'm completely on board. Selfish Gene does this well.

sounds corny but the lyrics really leap off the page hearing them sung, so its kinda cool going from just reading them to hearing the songs... i respect that he did that, and it seems like that could be a sonic boom influence... i remember sonic saying he'd get panda to write everything out, and i feel like this lyrical style has developed alot from tomboy to pw/now... it's pretty damn distinct now, and considerably different than person pitch, or any of his first 3 albums really..
i dig it... wasnt sure how i felt about the lyrics just reading them, but now theyre kind of fascinating... good balance of making sense but never like too much sense, which i think is a good vibe... he finds just the right word.... when he says "go vagabond, lay it on the lawn" he could have totally say 'lay it on the line' but goes with a more specific image that isn't just a saying...
also... its cool to compare this to mr noah and crosswords EPs... i love both of those and like 3 tracks across them are probably more preferable than pbvsgr tracks save for selfish and ctys (face, jabber, no mans), and yet this EP seems more unified and deeper in a way... the transitions help, but i feel like there's even this lyrical or thematic cohesion between them which makes it feel like more than just dope but still cobbled-together b-sides which is kind of the other 2...
i dig it... and dig deep lyrical critiques...

You're gonna be sorely disappointed when you discover that this record wasn't meant to be an audiophile record or anything. All the distortion, bass and overall muddiness is intentional. I have decent equipment and this is how it sounds. I highly suggest listening to it on any speakers and avoiding headphones. When he said it sounds better out in the air he means it. The bass breathes more and the vocals are more present.
It doesn't seem like the medium of vinyl was chosen for its superior audio quality here, as much as the experience of having the physical thing (rather than streaming), and playing it on speakers.

Current rip has a low volume cap, artifacts, and skips. The production aesthetic is dynamite and doesn’t need fixing; this average quality rip does though.
I also have the record and think it sounds great on my Sony MDR-1A headphones and Sonos Play system, apart from the issues mentioned above. I just want a portable version with better quality than what’s circulating.

yes, the lyrics are great.
I just wished the music was great as well.
don't get me wrong
the music is good, but it's not nearly as good as he/they can craft it.
nonetheless, I'm enjoying this way more than expected. a very solid EP.
(im not talking about melody here btw, because I do think alot of melodies are actually great)

A Day With the Homies sounds to me like the record closest - sonically and structurally - to his triangle idea of guitar / vox / drums that he talked about during the making of Tomboy. Although here its almost more of a single point.

^ totally, except it's more like bass / vox / drums. I'm obsessed with the way that most of the time it's just 3 elements going on at once
It blows my mind how Nod to the Folks is basically just drums, bass, vocals, and sirens. At first I thought there was a synth in there, but now I think it's just that he's making chords out of siren samples
Nod is becoming my fav now. I love the way the melody phrases are all kind of broken up with instrumental segments in between. And also the moments where everything drops out and it's just sirens

Interesting take on it! I really liked the Tomboy-era sound myself, especially how it turned out on the singles, and I pretty much immediately liked these songs.

yeah there's like those lone flute-like single-voice synths that bolster the sirens on Nod (unless they are just part of the sirens) and then theres that super minimal synth part that comes in at the end of Sunset after the vocals are done, but thats like 3 notes... feel like thats one of the few synths on the whole album...
there might be something on potm that drones.... but ya its mostly just the sickest bass ive ever heard on ac, beats that i mostly like even more than pbvsgr ones, and gorgeous harmonies...

I caved and picked up the record at a local store Friday instead of waiting for my slow domino preorder. Got home, the first track skipped the whole way through on my gf's soundesign table. Bummed out, got drunk big time. Saturday I pulled out my vintage fisher price player, played track one wonderfully with a shitty little speaker built in, ordered a new needle for hers.

I am obsessed with the way "Flight" and "Sunset" both have deceptive intros that sound like they're following AC's live transition style of slowly adding/altering layers until the song reveals itself. Instead both tracks have a focused build up to a certain moment and the additional layers literally EXPLODE onto the sonic landscape and charge onwards with sustained intensity. I really, really love this unique approach – refreshing and unexpected.

Noticed today that "Flight" was number 14 on SiriusXMU's download 15 list this week. Interesting choice, seeing as it can't be downloaded, but...
Would ya'll say Flight is the natural first pick as a single? It seems like Folks & Sunset are the most mentioned as far as favorites go. Interesting that Flight is the one that got out there first.

Right? I have to confess, I only listened to the Desert Daze recordings 2 or 3 times and then made myself shelve the music so I could hear it on vinyl. I still haven't received my EP from Domino, so I'm not in a great position to judge, but POTM would have been my pick for a "single" based on what I have heard so far. I was curious to see what others who have given it a chance to grow and air out thought about that being the pick.

Flight was my favorite on first listen and still is holding strong. It's so catchy and the beat is bubblegum
On a side-note, 'You dance, get yer cocktail on' might be my favorite line on the album. Recently, it's made me envision this gem of a scene
