finished my first listen, this is just great — songs, production, sequencing. I don’t get three out of five reviews at all.

defense feels so refreshing and optimistic in the end.

the album is even better than I thought, and I liked all the singles.

Great write up

50mg instrumentation probably the only real tinge of disappointment. Fantasy/fallacy was always destined to be an album highlight though and boy it is

Gonna wait until tomorrow to listen. Got a whole evening planned of playing the new Monster Hunter and listening to PB.

Happy to hear everyone is liking it. I really loved Buoys and the last two AC records, so I think this will really hit me in a wonderful sweet spot. Sounds like it'll've been worth the wait.

Think this will go down as one of the all-time great divorce records.

Oh my God. I was so worried going into this. Thought it wouldn't be up to scratch. Thought it wouldn't be as immediate as I wanted it to be. I was wrong! It's incredible. An all timer. More thoughts tomorrow as I'm 8 beers deep but goddamn, should never have doubted the process. Hell yeah

Okay - I haven't listened yet. I'm waiting till it drops. But I've read enough reviews about the first half / second half tonal shift that I thought I'd ask those who HAVE listened: this all sounds like the arc of 7s too. Bright/poppy to somber/atmospheric. Anything to that?

Yeaaaa, the shift in tone is probably more dramatic on here than on 7s though. 7s kinda eases into it whereas on sg when venom's in ur like '"oh shit it's sad now" but it still flows really nice. 7s also kinda stays in that more somber zone where defense picks it up at the end, albeit with cement feet and a head to the ground. It kinda flows like tomboy as well in that way you were saying. Ferry Lady kinda functions the same way jetty does

I thought it’d be like Bowie’s Heroes with Defense kind of waking you up (as did The Secret Life of Arabia), but it’s not that much atmospheric/ambient as I expected really — more heart touching and deep than sleepy. Thus, the contrast between Elegy and Defense is definitely there.

Also, listening to the singles I had some regrets that Noah’s guitar from live performances isn’t really there. Now it feels present enough.

My first thought of Venom’s In was — oh, it could be on Pet Sounds 😁

I love how he rotates through many of his different singing styles on this record. Theres the signature pb harmonies, his crooning, some live inflections sprinkled in there. It's like all of his modes.

Some initial thoughts:

- Praise is a lot of fun, though I do wish it had the long intro from the live shows
- That's his daughter on Anywhere but Here, right? Sounds like same voice from "open your eyes" sample for sure
- 50mg especially sounds like a solo elaboration on his IIN songs
- Just as Well has so much ear candy, love the off-kilter vibe, perhaps an early favorite
- LitC and Elegy make for a beautiful slow dark section, love this side of panda that we don't hear enough IMO. He really nailed these in the studio
- I wasn't too hot on Defense as the first single, but it makes for a stunning closer in context

Overall, think this is another instant classic. Venom's In still needs time to grow, but every song is a winner and the production is lush and gorgeous. It's sorta like an evolution of Buoys meets Broke Zodiac/Gem & I, a fully fleshed out solo panda band. Imagine this one will be on repeat for quite a while 8-)

Did an interview with Josh and Noah, will be out today or tomorrow. Found out some really cool stuff, including but not limited to:
- Other songs from the SG sessions that might be coming out
- SG is Panda's last contractual album with Domino
- What the S and E stand for in "S of E" (now Elegy for Noah Lou)
- Upcoming releases from AC/Solo projects
- Noah's thoughts on the Luca Doncic trade

Might not be able to post the link here when it releases, doing some travellings to Spain/Portugal... but will post when I do get the chance, but until then check the "A Musician and A Filmmaker" youtube channel (it's very likely it'll be released today).

And remember to like and subscribe so we can keep doing stuff like this!

Thanks in advance y'all!

First impression - side B is the work. Elegy is the highlight for me, and the vibe of Defense is so different / effective in context.

This gives me those stoned dad in the basement vibes. Zoned in on those weird liminal emotions and feeling out the corners. I can see why this isn't getting rave reviews, but this is the kind of shit I'm here for.
