I really enjoy this album but I don't get the massive hype.
nevertheless I'm happy that people seem to dig deaks stuff so hard. must feel great to finally release this thing after such a long time and then get all this positive feedback.

one thing i love about this release is that all of the tracks have completely different vibes, very dynamic for such a short release...like take any given track and there is no other track on the album that is quite like it...all the songs could stand alone as singles very well (save for the two transitional tracks of course)

Massive hype? How? Also if you enjoy it why does it matter how many other people are enjoying it and/or if you are enjoying it less than them?

I wouldn't say my life has drastically changed from listening to the record but it has deeply moved me. I attended a funeral for a family member on Friday afternoon and listening to the record on the drive there was therapeutic and I felt connected to the sounds/themes throughout the record, especially in the context of what has been happening in my life as of late.
Overall this record feels transcendent to me, as does most of AC's work throughout the years. I can hear the emotion and energy channelled into the art and it makes me feel alive and connected to it as a listener.

I think part of the reason CA and many other AC fans are so turned on by Sleep Cycle is because it's a very honest and emotional record addressing topics of doubt, anxiety and confidence that I'm sure we all are familiar with. Fans aren't drawn to Animal Collective who are already 100% sure of themselves. It's the opposite actually. At their best moments, AC's music helps us understand the confusion and emotional doubts that we all deal with inside. And the beauty of the melodies combined with the other sonics can even further help elevate our moods. I believe that this album is jammed pack with these moments, something that I have not seen done to quite an effect since Person Pitch or Feels.
And what makes Sleep Cycle even better is that it's very refreshing for an AC fan. Where many long time fans may have started to doubt the band's projection or just felt that Dave's or Noah's writing styles have gotten a little stale, Josh sneaks in and offers a fresh take, one that is familiar, but also new. Old and young fans alike can hear that Deakin has a presence that is capable of guiding an album all the way through. This is both a surprise and a reassurance at the same time.
At least this is why I like this album so much

Golden Chords is unreal.
I do kind of wish it were an AC song though with Avey on lead vocals and panda and deak harmonizing the chorus and other random parts of the melody. That said, it's beautiful regardless

Deakin/JOSH- Congratulations on releasing the most brilliant album Listening to this album for the last few days has been legitimately uplifting and inspiring to me. It's been so long since music moved me or spoke to me like this. Good House in particular makes me feel genuine hope and happiness that I haven't thought possible for a very long time. "spit out all that rage/shame"... really struck a chord with me. I usually just lurk this forum but I made an account because i just wanted to say thank you so very much for giving us this wonderful gift. This music already means so much to me. Thank you

I think the most profoundly surprising thing about this album is the role Deakin's voice plays. Golden Chords and Good House are mostly great amazing brilliant because of the vocals. And the most exciting moments of Just Am and Footy (imo) are still moments where Josh hits some sort of awesome vocal or lyric.
Like I thought this would be an album where his voice would be a sort of droning, neutral, background thing that was modified by vocal effects. But on this album it really is the main delight.

Agree so much. It's so inspiring to me to see him talk about how self-conscious he was about his voice, drowning it in effects, etc...and then he releases this diamond of a record...And his voice is the center of it all.

it's just that I was kind of surprised of the overwhelming amount of positive feedback in this thread and how deeply people are being touched by the record. I'm not saying the album doesn't deserve the praise because I also really like this album. and of course it doesn't matter how many people enjoy it and that won't change my opinion on it.
simply put I was just surprised that it was this well received here.

this makes a lot of sense and also helps understanding why people are so into it.
and this fresh take you mentioned is maybe my only gripe with sleep cycle because I really can't hear the freshness (which I can totally forgive seeing how long this album was in the making). to me it sounds like a (very enjoyable) redo of places that all have been visited before by animal collective.
and maybe it's because I'm not one of those fans seeing avey's and panda's writing style getting stale because I think centipede Hz, slasher house, the grim reaper and painting with are all stellar records and each one provided a fresh and new feeling for me.
i still think sleep cycle is also very good and I don't want to sound too negative. and now people can trash me because I still haven't read the lyrics to sleep cycle

He took no real issue with it my man....
Also it's alright bullseye, I really liked Sleep Cycle but I haven't been listening to it much at all. Probably because I've been so busy trying to catch up on other music though
Just AM still grooves hard, feels like the follow-up to Rosie Oh and that was one of my top 3 on Centipede Hz.

I find myself wishing the album was longer but at the same time it does feel complete and I can't imagine it flowing this well if there were more tracks. Also, I don't understand why people are comparing this to painting with when both albums are obviosly striving for different things. People are saying sleep cycle is so much more emotional which is true but painting withs focus is obviosly not trying to be emotional. Painting with is supposed to be fun and to the point which I think it did that perfectly. Lots of people have lost faith in animal collective but I'm glad thier sound is changing. If you wanna listen to older stuff it will always be there. I guess thier last 2 albums arnt for everyone but I don't think they've lost thier talent at all. That being said I really look forward to the next anco album with deakin in it and I hope his style is more prominent on the next one.

I feel like this album shows how crucial of a role Deakin played in past releases. I can better hear now the influences he had on earlier albums, most notably HCTI, Feels, and SJ (campfire songs too). Even his contribution to their "ambient" material reveals itself

I totally agree with both of these posts... I also love centipede and painting with immensely.. personally centipede might be my favorite anco album because of how the sound textures of that album totally blew my mind and the emotions and lyrics behind it hit my heart so hard...
but with these two releases this year.. it makes me feel like their best work might still be ahead of them.. which is a ridiculous thought thinking about what theyve done already... but if you think about it.. with the command they have over sound textures after creating sonically mind blowing records in centipede and painting with and a whole new "confident" deakin also returns to help create their next record.. it could be their white album or what have you... its a really exciting thought.

PSA: everyone who isn't familiar with it already, listen to footy from the 2010-01-18 Le Point Ephémère, Paris, France boot ...it's like a completely different song. very little percussion and very soft vocals. if the sleep cycle version is 'slippi' then this version is 'screens'...it's like PBVSGR preakness vs tomboy preakness

Yes! The erratic percussion is so wonderfully reminiscent of cuckoo
I love this album because its not afraid to make you beg for emotional forgiveness and when it comes it payyyyyyyyys off (first piano chords in Just Am, the first happy melody on Footy, etc.)
I feel like this album, down there, and the keep cassette (maybe hcti too) have this same intensely personal, sanctuarious vibe. Theyre like the best nature-y brown, light brown red leaf kinda vibe. Pure halloween fun (true halloween spirit - slasher flicks was like a weird halloween party). Theyre for sure my four favorite ac related releases

Nicolas Vernhes mixed it and Lou Teti mastered it. Credits say "Additional recording by Animal Collective" and "Additional sound editing by Josh Dibb"
(recording was done by Kria and Nicolas Vernhes at different places/times, that was the only thing I knew off the top of my head lol, although I guessed that Nicolas mixed it)
still haven't found my DVD, I just looked at the credits on YouTube

i really love what that review says about how it feels "like a night where sleep is achievable, but not without overcoming a restless mind." i've been having trouble sleeping lately because of that and i think a lot of the fears and anxieties expressed on sleep cycle are related!
