Ya I'm pretty sure the expectations for C Hz were sky high cuz of Merriweather, prob not nearly as much for Painting With. So in that sense PW was probably received a lot better
If you just look at metacritic score or whatever I wouldn't be surprised if Centipede Hz is rated higher but the fan reaction / perception is a different story. Ratings can't convey the full context of expectations and how they affect someone's evaluation of the music

I guess it depends on how you define reception. CHz had a much stronger, more intense and longer lasting backlash; but PW received reviews, from mainstream outlets I might add, that were much more acerbic than anything I ever saw for CHz:
Like the meanest thing said about CHz was the "burrito on a windshield" comparison, and that quickly became a joke.

In a negative review, Lee Arizuno of The Quietus called the album "absolute dogshit from start to finish", repeatedly describing each song as "a sing-song number with faux–naïf lyrics ... and EDM belches".[30] Adam Downer of Paste compared it to the "legion of small-time blog bands in the early 2010s ... who could do a decent facsimile of the Animal Collective sound but lacked the intangibles to garner their acclaim ... [the album is] not very noteworthy, the band nowhere close to fulfilling its potential. The scariest thing Painting With leaves behind is the feeling that Animal Collective think that’s perfectly fine."[31]

That first reviews come up before

the quietus can do good work but that review is a joke. like oh yeah now you have a problem with the silly aliases, but you still look at their past work with spielberg face? the people who write reviews like that think they're speaking truth to power, but it's always more about historical expectations than the actual content of the music. take away the history and they wouldn't have this anger. that review is just masturbation with begging for money at the end, it is disgusting.

I'd say CHz had and still has more backlsh than PW, by fans and casual listeners alike. People seemed to make a point to consider and then hate CHz. PW seemed to be all but ignored upon it's release by everyone outside of the core fanbase.
Within the fanbase, I still think CHz is their least loved record.

I think Painting With gets a better reception because - by design - it seems quite disposable, frivolous and frothy. There's almost nothing on the whole record which either moves me or attempts to move me. On those grounds, it succeeded as a bouncy, funtime, airhead kind of record. I think it's pretty weak relative to everything they've ever done, including Centipede Hz, but my preference/prejudice almost doesn't allow for this kind of record. It's an experimental left turn for Animal Collective in that it abandons much of what makes them so special to me and tries to do something different. I respect that, I just don't want to listen to it again.
CHz felt like the first time they genuinely missed the target and got muddled. I don't feel they were on the same page at all but they were trying very hard to make it work. There are moments of dazzling brilliance but holistically, it felt like the result of effort rather than inspiration.

i just really dont think this is true. i guess i can only speak anecdotally, but my friends who are AC fans think painting with just sucks. they don't seem to think of it as nothing or frivolous, they seem to think of it as actively in your face, aggressively electronics but without worthwhile songs. very offputting. i think i'm the only one of my 6 or 7 friends i know who like AC enough to know the discog that likes it, though i concede it's my least favorite of their records.
CHz seeemed to be a slightly disappointing following up to MPP's greatness to them, but i think understanding it was a different beast they didn't actively dislike it. they still found things to like and went to the tour at least.
fans of the band seemed to still be down with chz on release even if critics were more lukewarm on it. fans did not seem to like painting with much while critics also liked it less than chz.

Yeah, painting gets too much hate. The songs lack an organic feel to a degree, but they've got such good production and catchy melodies that it makes up for it. And watching them play most of it live helped me appreciate it too. So many cool modular interludes.

Burguhlers is the best song on the album.

Coral Demo 1 is so good. when put together those unused demos make a better ambient album than a lot of what has come out this year lol
cannot wait for Tangerine Reef to drop, especially after seeing how droney and meditative the Sung Tongs show was last night. so happy they're returning to that sound

ya that’s my thing. i hate this thing where we don’t trust artist intentions and have to constantly second guess —— BUT i really wish they toured those songs before recording them

THIS IS NOT THE THREAD
but yeah I sort of agree. I love the guys for always trying something new and experimenting, and PW was def something they had never done before. But I feel like the experimental work flow of both CHz and PW were to their detriment. Like please guys, just start sending each other demos again!

Well yeah, I mean ODDSAC was a super collaborative project where they sent the film back and forth between the band and Danny. The sounds and visuals were built around each other. And it took years! This doesn't seem to have the same kind of process involved. And the sound and visuals might stand alone a little better as a result. I have no doubt the film is beautiful and will sync with the music well but it's a different beast it seems.

I'm just getting an error message there
Yep, I've now tried various ways to open the link but it seems to be gone.
Anyone with the zip able to re-up, please?

Getting Glasslands vibes from some of this. That last song sounds incredible.
