Haven't had a chance to listen to the new boot. Have they changed it at all since blast version?
some slightly different panda harmonies in the first section

It really feels like a singular experience in their catalog, perhaps in all of “pop music.” And, like you before last night, I’ve only heard cruddy boots. The Blast version + wine and I’m crying in my sleeping bag at the bottom of the world. I like the Penderecki comparison. His record with Beth Gibbons, conducting Górecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, has a similar energy and vibe. Just all out dark catharsis, hope, defeat. An adventure.
Never heard that one, will peep. Thanks!
This Jonny Greenwood piece also fucks me up in a faded photographs, artifacts and remnants of society way. And in a where did life go way.
Here's a good chaser.

tbh i think the new harmony is much better. i winced at panda's old delivery every time, it was definitely slightly out of his range. he could've nailed it in studio but live it was too much for sure

Maybe us both it's the way that you look at what's winning
Linked in one mind if we master the infinite volley
Going the distance and watching the ball while it's flying
Feeling the effortless pull while we're swinging the paddle
None of us wants it to fall so we're working together

i will echo that defeat was an incredibly powerful experience live. i was tripping balls, so take this with a grain of salt, but i was absolutey ensconced in another realm for that whole song. i genuinely couldn’t believe what i was hearing. it’ll definitely rank among their best ever tracks when it gets released. the word ain’t ready for this masterpiece.

Listening to the new Starland Ballroom version and the wordless melodies that Avey does between the first two verses are awesome. Really hope they're in the studio version.
Panda's stuff in the chorus of the first section super cool! So many more ideas in here from him. Sounds amazing and really adds to the ethereal/spiritual feel.
Build up to the middle section is glorious. Builds the energy and intensity but is still really spacey and magical. Some classic AC chanted syllable stuff. The moment the middle section kicks off fell slightly flat dynamically but obviously that wouldn't happen in the studio version so I'm not fussed. Still dig the way this section has retained the medieval vibe while also feeling more groove driven and funky.
Final section, again, love everything Panda is doing. He's kept all the best harmonies from earlier versions and added some wonderful little embellishments/variations. Avey also adding a few new variations, all of which sound great to me.
Looking forward to having a look at all Dave's lyrical changes.
This version (first I've heard post Skiffs 2 recording) definitely gives me confidence that studio Defeat is going to be absolutely brilliant.

I wish I had the right words for it, but I feel like the avey/panda relationship comes through in a really special way in Defeat.
From the quiet euphoria, to absolute triumph, to whimpering despair, they really back each other perfectly through it all. Perfect in harmony and perfect as opposites.

whats it called when ur so far past demoitis and its just ur favorite song that is constantly evolving and theres no way itll ever be as good as you want it to be because it might already be perfect?
that being said-- panda hitting the high note and falling off again with "the only thing you'll KNOH OH OH.." is taking a lot of getting used to.
anyways whatever comes out in the studio will not be the definitive version. it will jsut be another version

I really enjoyed Defeat last night. Although it felt like they were playing to the like 10 of us that knew it. I still wish the middle section shared more with the Music Box days. The rest was just melancholic and almost put me in a trance.

I really love the new Defeat, I still haven't heard the Music Box version but the middle section is an improvement over the '19 version imo. And I don't mind the new changes to Noah's harmonies at all. But yeah it's unfortunate seeing it lost on so many ppl, hopefully that changes when the studio version is released. I was in a total trance most of the time lol

Lmao, they are really going to fuck up the (once utterly beautiful) middle section, aren’t they? I just heard a snippet of the newest version and it (still) sucks.
why, why would they do this to us—and ultimately, themselves?

i think defeat might be my worst case of demoitis ever. i can't let go of the music box version and i never will. it was perfect.

The newest iterations still capture me in a way no other song has in a long time, but I agree. Bringing the music box crew into the studio + adding pandas parts would have been perfection.

I'll take the heat for this --- love Defeat but I think the first and last sections could stand to be half as long and they'd still create the same effect

I don't have a problem with the length of the first section, but I agree the last section could be cut down a little. Specifically I don't think they need to do the "frightened mother" section a third time. Once they hit the DEFEAT part the first time it feels like the song has reached it's climax, feels unnecessary to add anything else after that.
Overall I don't have an issue with the changes they've made to Defeat, there are things I miss from the music box version but it's still an amazing piece of music. The way you guys are talking about it is pretty much how I still feel about 2019 Passerby...

I really really really hope Avey's vocals have that down pitched auto tune in the last section ISN'T IT NOWWW!! That was a really powerful part, with his regular voice it doesn't hit the same. And pandas "oh no, not now" don't sound as defeated (sorry had to, its the word i needed to use).

No shot they can make the song shorter. I promise that would be 20x worse demoitis for people, so much worse then music box 2nd section to now which will prob sound good on record. Music box feels like its 5 min long song when its a goddamn NOT SUITE. The first part just is not substantial in the music box version, but it is pretty. all my opinion ofc
i could see hellomark's change though, but if they do anything to the first sections length im ragequitting music. it sounds like music box was just an incredibly unique and amazing performance, but not in a way they could feasibly capture putting out on record until they put out the live album or they just recorded an album with all of those aforementioned artists they played with. It is fucked up. Listening to the buildup of 2nd part music box is invokes towering awe to me still. All these instruments whirling around you. But that shit is 2018... that shit is from the before-times.

Middle section is literally 2 minutes long in a 20+ minute song, I really don't care what they do with it as long as it's fun and transitions well. Maybe I'd feel differently if I heard the MBV version, but I don't really want to ruin my fav song with demoitis so I've been avoiding it lol

Music Box: Just under 15 minutes long
1st section: 4:30 minutes
2nd section: 4 minutes
3rd section: 6 minutes
9:30 club version: 21 minutes long
1st section: 9 minutes
2nd section: 2 minutes
3rd section: 10 minutes
I simply do not understand what happened here. Love these boys but man, I don't get it.

i'm thankful both deak and avey have said on multiple occasions that they want to release the full music box show once LP2 is out, they've said it enough times that i'm confident we'll get it, so i'm not worried about demoitis for defeat and magicians

kinda surprised that i didn't like seeing this one live! the length really bothered me for the first time, and the middle section is the weakest it's sounded. the studio version might be better though if they end up adding more layers to it

Rohcti could start with the middle section, just so they understood our comparison. I wouldn’t pressure them to hear any other part but of course would not object if they wished to.
