I have a feeling that this is like the 2013 ATP show. he was probably just test-driving the material here, if i had to guess he'll go on tour next year sometime with the songs a bit more fleshed out (and with different visuals than the greaper tour)

but didn't he say the album was already finished? wouldn't the songs already be as fleshed out as they are on the record?

^I was just thinking about that, wonder if this means that the songs on the album will the same or at least very similar to how they sounded at Desert Daze?
I had to look up that interview again where he said the record was done (
this one). It's still hard to tell exactly what he means but it sounds like he at least finished recording it, and maybe finished mixing too?
Also just realized that was way back in June, so we could be getting an album announcement anytime now?? If he really did finish recording 4 hours before that interview

IIRC he said he had two short albums' worth of material, ~5 songs each so 10 songs? some of these might be from another future record

based on this info from a fellow CAer who followed them on tour (there's a thread from a few months ago with more details). might just be hearsay but interviews have confirmed most of the details since this was posted

Noah was very open to talk about his small plans. He actually has two small collections of music ready to record (or possibly even recorded already). He said collections because its fuzzy on whether they are considered albums or just EPs, because they are both just under 30 minutes. Granted he said, its longer than a standard EP, but then again, it feels similar in length to Fall Be Kind. He said at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to him, and will let the record company decide how to best market it (Two EPs on one CD, two separate albums, etc). He does plan to tour with it sooner than later though. After the summer Painting With Shows wrap up, he will take the fall off, and then hit the road in the winter to promote the new stuff. He didn't say specifically, but it seems that at least part of the tour will take place before the new mini-albums come out. Apparently in terms of the two albums content, they both are going to be musically similar. He said directly that they were very electronic and kinda poppy, and seemed to imply it would be like a introverted, slightly calmer continuation of Painting With, but there will be variety to the sound.

Since Peacemaker is likely my favorite PW era track, I'm very pleased with the mellow synthy direction hahahha. There are some moments where he really sounds like Arthur Russel: his voice, even some electric cello sounding synths.

oh thx for the info, i missed that news
the new songs are cool.... but I also was expecting him to make something completely different after meeting with the reaper and this material sounds a lot like PBVSGR 2.0, but much more banger and noisy. tropic of cancer almost came as a relief at the end. subtlety goes a long way...
I feel bad typing this but I hope the other songs are more different and the production on the album goes to another direction from the last lp, but for the first time I think Im more excited for a new Avey album

It's decent, just a bit too explicitly dancey for me. Seems he and Dave are headed in very different directions, which is how PW sounded to me.

I'm really interested in this take Stan and I thank you for making it. Some Life Shit is dragging me down today, so as is often the case with Animal Collective, these boots are serving as a wonderful distraction from the horrors of Real Life and having people to talk about AnCo reality is an absolutely gift.
I disagree with your take, but you've given me the chance to reflect on what I love and value about this band. Most notably, their nature as a
Collective. Not to obsess with taxonomy, but I am a grad student in English, so I suppose it is my business.
To me, Noah & Dave taking such dramatic divergent paths, sonically speaking, gives me as a fan of their works and Their Work (that is: solo, and AnCo) a multilayered experience. I don't mean to chastise, you can take their work, leave it, love it, hate it, and anything in between. But specifically regarding their eventual return to Collective, I hope these disparate sounds create an amazing tension in the studio. I want a complex, challenging piece of music from this band. I see PW, which I loved, and now like, as Panda winning the tug-of-war; I think the next album will trend more towards MotW or Eucylapctus. I think that Deakin's long and winding road will see him home with the boys, and I think Geo is (as always) off on some insanely cool shit that'll tie it all together.
All of this is to say: I agree, they're sounding farther and farther apart. But I think this will lead to a diverse and astonishing sound for this band. That's all.
viva panda.

this version of You can count on me is so great, the drum loop reminds me of really early sweet trip, like late 90s minimalistic electronic.

I actually think the solo material from every member is now better than the output as a band, which wasn't the case 9 or ten years ago. It seems like these guys have individuated quite a bit from their former process of making music together. It took me awhile to realize and understand--because I haven't really liked the band's output since ODDSAC--but they're still making good music, just not with each other imo. Pretty cool that they can have so many different fans now that they are making such different music from each other. AV used to be my fave songwriter in the band, now he is my least fave, and I'm sure that will shift again in the coming decades.
This new Panda stuff is exhilarating for me--I love good weird pop, and this is good weird pop.

imagine if panda was the one playing effected guitar right now over kinda minmal samples/loops and avey was the one doing a beat-heavy dance-pop vibe rn instead of the otherway around... guess panda hasnt messed with guitar since tomboy, would be kinda cool to see him back on it (i guess im kind of describing their down there/tomboy era... its like theyve switched places almost)
this stuff is kind of interesting but i am surprised to see him working in the same spirit of greaper, tho i guess greaper songs arent that than tomboy save for the lack of guitar. but still guitar is only on half of tomboy... my original point is i almost cant imagine that many different set-ups that panda can do... but i guess u can change yr sound drastically while still using a similar set-up... what if he did a solo era where he sat at a drum kit with a sampler or something.. would b whacky/sweet

Yo I just had a flashback to the TB tour. Kid Panda with the guitar and the modular, or whatever that tech was. Shit was transcendent.
I hope that take was acerbic enough for the folks in the cheap seats.

think this would be decent:
yccom
[Falling Asleep at the Wheel]
crosswords
[Mystery Stage]
acid wash
[Animal, Mineral, Vegetable]
[Force Quit]*
tropic of cancer
another member suggested this, don't hear it in the song but the only lyric i can make out is 'Fingers Anyone' and i think that'd be confusing with 'Mr. Fingers' being an AC track
there might be an inclination to think that 'mystery stage' is two tracks but i hear melodies / lyrics from near the beginning repeated near the end, i think it's one long track
also, curiously, lyrics and melodies from 'falling asleep at the wheel' resurface in mystery stage and A / M / V...

This new stuff is amazing. I feel like we were due for a super dubby dance record from panda eventually... the sounds are familiar from PBVSGR / PW but the structure of the songs is WAYYY different. It honestly reminds me more of Person Pitch but without samples and straight up club beats to em. the longer songs and super loose feeling of them is so fresh and wonderful... cannot wait for more

An immense thank you for recording, splitting, etc!! I could distinguish two shorter tracks on either side of Falling Asleep at the Wheel that could just be considered transitional but they are also bangers! Here's what I've got.
1. You Can Count on Me
0:00 - 3:38
2. ("I've Got the Power" dub cut)
3:38 - 6:08
3. (Falling Asleep at the Wheel)
6:08 - 11:00
4. ("Push It" dub cut)
11:00 - 13:02
5. Crosswords
13:02 - 18:02
6. (Mystery Stage)
18:02 - 26:04
7. Acid Wash
26:04 - 31:58
8. (Open Your Eyes)
31:58 - 39:41
9. (Force Quit)
39:41 - 45:24
10. Tropic of Cancer
45:24 - End

my impression is that at the beginning they only had the band so they put all they have in it, but after they also establish their solo careers (after PP and DT) I think they prefer to keep more deeply and personal songs on their solo work and animal collective became a band where they come together as old friends and make fun music with more general themes
