I don't thik they sound bad, but if you put on your cynical hat it's easy to sort of hear it as a by gone production style

I got to interview Panda earlier this month and he said he'd rather not have to travel so much in order to get his and Animal Collective's projects done. My contribution to this thread:
- MPP isn't a perfect record. Daily Routine and Taste prevent it from being so.
- I'd rather listen to/watch ODDSAC than to listen to CHz`
- Painting With has 3 amazing songs: FloriDada, Vertical, Golden Gal. The rest of the album sounds average and uninspired (for Animal Collective standards)

Two of the best songs on the album prevent it from being perfect? I don't understand.

I don't think painting with sounds good, production-wise, and i can't understand why people do. for lack of a better term, it sounds lame

I think person pitch and mpp aged perfectly fine, not sure what people are saying. if anything they sound better than ever in the face of person pitch

I really enjoy the production of PW, particularly Hocus Pocus and litg

in the verses of Lying in the Grass there's this quiet, textural kinda synth going on in the background that's sweet, sorta reminds me of Basic Channel or Actress. you can hear it best in the intro

Water Curses, the EP, is pretty timeless, just like all of SJ. It doesn't really sound like anything, despite being rooted in a certain indie rock era. Water Curses the track is probably the most distinctive song in their discography.

Person Pitch is very reminiscent of a particular era but there's a looseness and spontaneity and innocence and inspiration and atmosphere to it which is evergreen. Everything else he's done reeks of effort and exertion, in comparison. Great songs, great music, some of which is deliriously good, but nothing as enduring or ecstatic, to my ears.

I know I'm not being contrarian or anything here, just refuting some of the utter fucking shit I've had to read in this thread from entry level wankers.

Haha yes Stan.

Water Curses is a flawless EP, and their best. I will also add that Seal Eyeing is hugely underrated, if only because the other three are widely held in high regard

It really is the icing on the cake that cobwebs and seal eyeing both happen to be great songs, cause even if they were complete shit the strength of the first two tracks alone would still make it their best EP.

also Recycling is my least favorite song on PW, and i totally dont get all the hype for it, and it somehow being a "perfect song" as so many have said...

the instrumentation was really boring, and should have been played by guitars or something.. i get having a concept album.. but you know, do the right thing for the music.... but whatever.. what do i know.

as a hardcore radiohead fan.. even kid a has a some guitar tracks

I'm not a contrarian, but I don't see anything wrong with using the AnCo acronym. Sorry if that makes me a pretentious hipster bandwagoner buzzword.

to be fair, he has by far the best stage presence.

also avey is a really terrible dancer, but it kind of fits his vocal style so whatever (i mean that endearingly)

synthesizers are real instruments btw and anyone who thinks otherwise knows less about music than they think they do
also there are pianos on the album

I'm guessing the distinction is between synthetic guitar sounds made by a synthesizer vs "real guitar" sounds made by a guitar, rather than "fake" synthesisers vs "real" guitars
spoogn wrote:

first is better, second is maybe equal and last is worse imo

i know they are man.. ive seen the moog documentary
i called them virtual because its synthesized sounds, not that they aren't real instruments.
even a kiddie pool is an instrument.
and I never talked about the album.. im just talking about the song recycling.
its a good song... but I cant seem to love it like so many others do

preach

I got into an argument the other day with one of my professors over whether samplers and synths are real instruments. His overall point was "it needs to have been played 100 years ago to be a real instrument"
