Here's a snap of the cassette, it doesn't seem like many other backers have come in this thread awaiting their package but I'll spoiler the image just in case.
Spoiler: show

wow, what is there left to be said....

what a masterpiece.

the only word i can think of is "generosity"

josh is so vulnerable and sincere with literally every single word and line and the vibe matches perfectly.

good house is probably my favorite track that has come out in a long time. I listen to that song and i feel like my ego just melts away.

all good things take time. this is a very very good thing.

I love painting with, and i am NOT comparing, but i will say, this is 2016's person pitch for me.

AKA its a game changer.

30 minutes of spring air

spiritual balm

I've listened to it non-stop since. I want to take this album with me on a journey.

Making two very weird connections with the vocals: Julian Casablancas and Paul Banks.

Having never heard any of Deak's live tracks I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. This is really good, Footy is fantastic. I can totally see his influence in stuff like Feels and especially HCTI after listening to this.

Good stuff, deek. Release it on vinyl!

edit: I kinda wish I had this on cassette! I feel like the warmth would compliment this really well

Deakin if you're reading this, hope you know how wonderful your music is and how much it means t your fans. These songs are what I hoped they would be but also surprising and more than what I imagined in all of the good ways. It's also really neat to hear your solo music and understand the sounds that you dig and be able to better guess at what parts were yours in the past animal collective work.
More than anything though, this release stands on its own as an extremely solid record and one that I can't imagine most AC fans not just loving like crazy!
Thanks for the amazing jams and vibes and times! My wife and I saw you at fun fun fun fest in Austin 6 years ago and have been hoping and anticipating a release from you before then, but especially since then! This delivers

I might get shit on for this opinion, but whatevs.

I love that the vibe of this album harkens back to the days of earlier animal collective: the organic guitar and nature sounds, the delayed vocals, the longer song forms. Just Am and Golden Chords are all wonderful sounding songs with precise, honest lyrics, and some of the bedroom production charm that is familiar to Young Prayer or Song Tongs. Footy is also one of the most intense AC related songs I've heard since HCtI so I heavily approve of that track as well. Definitely a lot to love on that end...

But this EP(?) also cries "hastily done." Shadow Mine, Seed Song and Good House are all littered with audible MP3 artifacts (I bought and downloaded FLACs and checked the spectrals to be sure, they are mastered from MP3 sources with multiple levels of unnecessary dithering on top), which makes it seem like some kind of fan bootleg that just took live sessions and dolled them up. Seed Song in particular sounding like something I'd record in my bedroom through a $5 amp and a $3 mic on $20 worth of acid. And what is with the cover? I assume it's a photo from a live show, but could the composition of the shot be any worse? Also, ALL CAPS for the tagging information, then all the lyrics are in lowercase. MADMAN!

I appreciate the lyrics, appreciate the return to form, appreciate the 4 real songs on here, but I honestly thought I purchased a fake release when I initially listened to it. Would love to see someone combine this album with the fake, fan-made Deakin album from 2014 and I think a better experience could be constructed from that.

re: Angelic Chaos

All of your notes are fine and unassailable I guess, like as a critique of professionalism (?), and I am def not gon attack you for not freaking out about this like the rest of us. Tho it's moments like these I'm glad my hearing has been eroded by concerts to the point that audiophilia is beyond me.

And like, the tagging discrepancies fuck with you like that? It's just an aesthetic typography thing! Even yr confusion about EP v LP seems mad displaced, like: It's songs that belong together as arranged how it's here now. I think it flows rl sweetly. It's so sweet!!! Mm and I can't tell if you're trolling about this being "hastily done" when it's been like literally 6 years in the making lmao. Also if you think this sounds "bad" or "cheap," I'd love to hear some of yr bedroom recordings (srsly), because this *sounds* great to me and I wanna hear more.

Maybe this is attack-y. Your opinion just seems rooted in such different criteria from anything that has ever mattered to me on a musical/critical level that I'm like: How are you getting caught up on that? Like it really sounded like a FAKE release to you?? But then again: We've all got different ears on so many levels, material/historical construction and all.

Hope that your criticisms are with you and not distracting from the joys you take away from this. I'm adoring how big this lil thing is. Dusting off parts of my AC imagination I had long forgotten

Yea I'm going to agree with Freak here. Criticism is fine but your post seems kind of troll-y. Are you really not able to enjoy the music because of "audible MP3 artifacts", tagging info, the artwork, and the distinction between a EP/LP?! That just seems excessive in my opinion. Do you really sit and think about those things when you're listening to music? I just can't imagine caring about any of that for any reason. Maybe relax and just enjoy it? Or don't?

I can honestly say I've never listened to ANY music and thought "if these spectrals are out of control then I'm turning this off!" Like... who does that lol

I mean, I'm an audio engineer so my hearing is a gift and a curse. It doesn't really affect my average listening experience to it, it's just so weird that he chose old versions of his songs that are covered in MP3-ifacts, when it could have been re-recorded in the span of 7 years.

My confusion over EP vs LP: I'm just chronologically confused. I thought he was putting out an album, but this is like an EP amount of tracks, and a near LP length, so what am I really supposed to call this? How do I refer to this piece of art when I say: "Deakin just put out a(n)..."

And no the tags didn't mess with me that bad. It just seemed like every little thing that was out of place in such a specific way, I felt like I was being messed with. Like out of everyone to release their music in all caps, Deakin's on that train? So next to LIL UGLY MANE, MF DOOM, I got DEAKIN? It just looks funny and tickles my OCD a bit.

Also, Seed Song really just reminds me of a track I did a few years back, recorded in the manner I jokingly referred to in the previous paragraph. It's not my best work, but literally it was just 3 tapes played through a $5 amp, recorded with 2 PlaySkool microphones. All I need to do is make it clip and it'd sound pretty close I think: https://clyp.it/2blolwi3

And yes, with a Bandcamp page called deakinjams, I feel like I had every right to assume it was fake. I mean, come on.

Angelic's post seemed extraordinarily nitpicky. The only thing I'd agree with is that it's a shame there's only four actual songs on there. I wanted more! But those four songs are insanely good, so it's not a big deal.

I don't know how many of you check out RYM, but the album is doing very well over there thus far. Good House had a bolded average score of 4.9 earlier today. It's dropped since but that's still pretty crazy.

I dig yr track! Hear some of the similarity, or motivation behind it

And as for question of nomenclature: Tape? Cassette? Release? Album! Idk? Some of my favorite LPs are 2 tracks. And I think DEAKIN fits alongside UGLY MANE! They're world-builders/explorers/self-namers. And AC has been using "jams" forever, Deadhead nerds they are

Also I wanna say: It IS totally suspect how unanimous our response is. I thought I grew out of AC standom a while ago (CHz & PW were both great listens but seemed to be missing *something* & I didn't dig PBVSGR), so I was def weirded out by the hyperlove reception of those releases. But here we are with new Deaks and I'm in this same stan-boat as everyone else.

There should be more nitpicking/"negative" reads! It's only different approaches/readings of same goldmine -- doesn't hurt to listen through other filters! I don't wanna shut down "dissenters," I was just confounded by some of yr focuses. But criticism is useful/creative in its own right! Get REAL!

For instance: I do think "Footy" should be mixed louder than any song I've ever heard and yet it is not
