RIP to Lee "Scratch" Perry, who we lost today. Posting here because all the boys have been pretty vocal about his influence, gotta sting for them today.

The recent live material indicates that they are slowly turning into the grateful dead and they will probably merge at some point. Either into grateful collective or even better, into animal dead.

If I heard AC cover "Ripple" i'd prolly cry tears of joy. And I don't even have emotions like that.

Chucked on ballet slippers today. Really glad it exists, even though it's weird that the mix basically sucks for more than half of the tracks. Hopefully they release more straightforward live albums in the future. Maybe they could go the king gizzard "official bootlegger" route for physical releases

if AC rlly know what they're doing they'll do something similar to the other one > water curses from the PW but instead of the other one it'll be what's become of the baby > #1 or something :shock:

Yeah I know they're better known for their live shows but this is like one of the few albums by the Dead that I can get into. Classic after classic.

Side D of animal crack box:

D1 Oh Sweet
D2 Young Prayer #2
D3 Do The Nurse

This is the only part of animal crack box that doesn't fit neatly into any established era of the band
A = Danse manatee
B = Hollinndagain
C = Campfire songs
D =
E = Ark
F= Sung tongs

so D feels like, proto-Ark I guess because of the intense anxious energy in Oh Sweet and Do the Nurse, but there's also the avey/panda young prayer track in there which is strange too. The notes in crack box tell us these were actually recorded in mid-late 2002, after all of the ark tracks on side E, which were recorded in early 02.

So is it reasonable to say this is the strange middle ground between Ark and Sung Tongs where they sort of hung in the balance between pushing further into noise territory and stripping back to the totally acoustic zone? If this is the case, Noah had a much larger impact on the direction of the band at this early stage than I had previously appreciated.
Am I overthinking this? Is there more information about this period that I'm missing?

On top of all that, listening again to Oh sweet now it's hitting me that of course, it's the seed of the feels sound. (Presumably) Deakin's guitar has that constantly vibrating feeling that's both warm and dark that defines the Feels sound. This is probably pretty obvious to some but I've never really gotten into feels-era boots.

excuse the rambling post, just having a small epiphany piecing together all the different areas of the band's early output that I haven't thought about much in a long time. Viewed it all as so separate and isolated before.

yeah their stuff does flow like a continuum, its just the albums end up being so different and singular that it's an illusion of isolated projects. but the early boots capture those transitional phases. the earliest Feels boots sound like a reasonable step from Ark. and I know what you mean about panda's influence. his performance in madrid made me think soul capturer was more influenced by him than i originally thought.

YES!!! Warm and dark is a good way to describe it.

This era is golden, please give the Cat's Cradle show another chance. Its sooo good. You will see white antelopes!

sorry I'm postin a lot rn...

someone in the "worst decisions" thread mentioned Sleeper Factory, a song I had totally forgotten about.
The BBC Breezeblock session and the Other Music boot present an interesting alternate path that they didn't end up taking in which ST could've been followed up with a mellower, Deakin DLC Sung Tongs II, maybe harking even further back to Campfire Songs.
In reality they probably just needed some material that was a bit easier to perform (hence two nirvana covers) compared to the feels stuff they were already touring with at the same time Sung Tongs was coming out and being promoted

You are in for a treat! I remember there was an interview Madlib did where he had pairings for his various albums. A pretzel and a beer with Madvillainy, psychedelic mushrms for Quasimoto (think Unseen in particular or it could just be all of it). Yessir Whatever is really good too!
