Been sitting with this one all day now... It's ok! Gets real nice and lush on the back end after that noisy freak out. Melody rocks of course and I dig Rivkas vox.
Thing is though, it's a synth main course with a guitar amouse-bouche which is what's really throwing me off... was hoping it be the other way around. The refrain 'what else can I do?' is also really jarring and upfront. And it should be like 10% faster lol. Listen to me, fucking spoilt child picking out the mushrooms from a beautiful strog. I should be grateful I'm getting fed! There really is no place in this fan club for opinions beyond reasonable doubt so I'm gonna let love in and say this will grow on me.

I know this album is on track to be great from takes like this. I really believe the best and most rewarding music is something that doesnt reveal itself to you upon first listen. All of my favorite music i had to "unlock" for the most part - the dead, ac, panda bear, joanna newsom, ween, etc.

That being said, from MY perspective, this album has been some of the most immediate songs in his career. Maybe I'm used to him changing it up and now I am hungry for something new, so the change in sound/vibe is less of a shock than like Buoys was for me as a younger fan.

I like the sound of the record overall from the singles. It sounds like a more "spacious" version of the sound AC did for the last two albums.

Im really diggin this new track, also still listening to Ferry lady all the time. :metal Defense is making more and more sense as the closer. Can't wait to see the band tomorrow, hope the records for sale, i can post a spoiler rundown of the merch table if people are interested in that.

Crazy to think we have been hearing bits a pieces of this thing for around 5 years now. From the Madrid boots to the new live recordings we have, all the songs are getting better and better IMO. My only lingering regret about this prolonged song cycle is not getting a version of Danger (Love of my life) done more in this style, with PB guitar work. As much as i love the Reset version, id also love a version that's more in line with the stripped down Madrid boot. Supposed that's the definition of demoitis though. :pwn:

Stoked for this month!

Think everyone's gonna like religious bop. Tempos slower like ends meet. Lots of sounds added but the bones are the same I believe. Like I mentioned I never partook in the Madrid boot so maybe this is a grain of salt. I have a huge spoiler too if anyone wants to tempt themselves

Ends Meet, Religious bop, S of E... all existed before we even knew Reset was a thing

it looks like Panda has a 7in for venom's in coming out on RSD this year. took me a second to figure it out as it looks to be a typo on the RSD release sheet, the track appears as vemom's in

weirdly anemic direction to take Ends Meet in tbh but the vocal harmonies remind me of A Day with the Homies enough to make up for it, total earcandy. there's an alternate universe where this is at least 10 bpm faster and guitar focused and starts with the "what else can I do" bit and it's perfect pop rock

Thought I would be disappointed with this after reading some of the takes in here, but I actually kinda love it! Probably my favorite single so far. The slower tempo totally works, gives it a different feel but it's one I can appreciate. Works well with how pretty and almost ethereal the guitar fx and harmonies sound.

Ends Meet, college frat party

Love the song -- Rivka and Maria's backing vocals are such a lovely and unexpected addition to a Panda song (which is the most I'm reminded of Slasher Flicks by this track). The guitar is so warm and round that I almost don't miss how it used to sound.

This is a bit of a Broke Zodiac sitch for me, where they've slowed it down but made it a lot more lush and interesting. I like it better than the original! It'll definitely hit harder hearing it live with that half-step up and faster tempo, but the recording fits the lyrical content.

was bracing myself from the takes on here but first impression of ends meet is good. definitely things I miss from madrid, the sustained wail as others have mentioned but mainly the odd delay rhythm the guitar had in that performance which I adored. but the melody is still rock solid, probably my favourite of all the new stuff so far. and I'm glad it's slower than the full band live version. I was a bit worried from the London boot that the whole album would just charge through every song at the same pace. also as much as I stan Maria, I'm not sure on her and rivka's vocal parts, mainly because I so deeply love panda bear vocals I would prefer to hear him singing every part. but that is sure to grow on me.
Overall so glad to finally hear this song proper and none of these gripes are earth shattering or likely to last long at all.
SG is going to be amazing.

yea good show but only an hour with no encore. went by so quick

noah’s vox and guitar sounded great, as did the whole band. kinda funny to see him in a sort of conventional rock band mode. last time i caught him was greaper shows and this was quit different. really nice crunchy and repetitive (in a good way!) guitar and rivke and maria(?) had added nice backing vox

no grift LPs at the merch table

felt like the couple next to me was talking the whole time, idk why you go to a show for a convo. maybe they were there for toro y moi

only two listens deep but i must echo the complainers. its slooow and i miss the sound of guitar. this was definitely my favorite song from the boots, both madrid and full band versions. it had that rollicking 50s/60s rock energy. now the pace is slower and the dominant instrument is big wet swells of reverb, with occasional guitar peeking through. it sounds diluted.

i agree with the skiffs comparison too. both the production on this track and the demoitis i'm experiencing remind me of skiffs. the way those songs lost some of their juice on the way to the studio, weighed down with bells and whistles. it's not like this track is particularly jam packed, but it still manages to feel suffocating. the studio additions pulled it away from the core feeling i latched onto.

with buoys, i don't mind the fakey digital sound. it has a clear purpose with the spare arrangements on that album. with grift, i'm sensing limitations of that style. panda's voice feeling so disembodied is at odds with the la bamba riff he's doing and it feels strangely unsatisfying. i want less effects on this thing so i can bask in the effortless simplicity of the melody, not to mention hear the damn guitar. and to reiterate, it needs to be way faster. its too chilled out.

still ready to hear the album with an open mind. and if i dont like it, they can win me back with a live album of this tour.

Ends Meet has a real Strung with Everything feel to it. Similar rhythm, similar vocal harmonies, similar tropical-adjacent bounciness.

I specifically searched "Strung with Everything" to see who else was making the comparison because damn, the resemblance in the verses is uncanny

I really loved the slower tempo....he gives more the s.e. rogie vibes... not 100% into the arrangements especially in comparison with the marvellous work on Ferry Lady which remains my favourite.

Very glad he added Grim Reaper songs. That album got me into Panda Bear and I thought Mr. Noah would work very well with this setup.

Still, Sequential Circuits returning as an opener is a nice surprise. Also, I really hope to hear Virginia Tech live. He seems to have added a couple of songs he didn't play during the European Leg.

virginia tech really ripped last night ..... the band is so good it's almost mental ...... there were parts, with my eyes closed, where i kept thinking it was a solo noah & two octatracks set cos the drums (and the drummer's playing / groove), the 4-part harmonies (unbelievable), and how deep the arrangements sound with just 1 bass and 1 guitar really felt like ... recordings. i kept thinking, "o that must be a sample," then would open my eyes and remember, "damn this is a band."

i watched it from upstairs and could see danny in the video booth which was an awesome treat, too. all the times i've seen him do video for PB & BD i've never ~seen him~ do video ... and it brought a lot of joy watching him headbang and smile. i take it he wasn't on the EU dates and this was his first time seeing the band live cos he seemed as hyped as i felt, lol.

kind of a strange vibe with the co-headline, tho, which, last night, anyway, definitely did not feel like co-headlining. (idk maybe it isn't? i don't know toro y moi very well but it strikes me, after last night, as though he might be substantially "more popular." but maybe that's just here in MN?) people talking during PB (i know that's just like ... live music at this point) ... but, also, the energy of the crowd during TyM seemed way more engaged, like that was who people were there for. (as opposed to two or three heads yelling "whooooo!" when PB band dropped into, say, "The Preakness" or something.)

i easily could have watched another hour of PB band ... and maybe would've enjoyed it more in a smaller room ... so i wonder if this makes more financial sense for Noah & co. to do it this way .... hoping it works out for them : ) and grateful they brought the music to mpls.

SELFISH GENE TONIGHT IN CHICAGO HOLY SHIT. Caught me so off guard I was so happy. Song is rlly resonating with me personally rn so it was especially a treat. Fucking incredible set i only wish he had played longer.. no song for ariel or preakness tonight sadly but otherwise if you had described this set to me a year ago I would have thought u were pulling my leg. I’m a big fan of all of his life eras they’ve all got something special to offer in their own right but this might be peak.. also his guitar tone was so dirty!! Would not have expected that but it worked so well
