Now that the album has been out for one week I’m going to ask the obvious next question…
When is the next Panda Sonic album coming out????!!!

I’m kidding of course.

But for real, what’s next on the horizon? Any live Panda Sonic shows? Is Panda just in AC world right now? Are there new ideas brewing? When can we hear the Panda Avey Sonic album?

I’m having a laugh. Peace n’ love.

Just a few thoughts on the songs on the album...
Spoiler: show
GttP This song has grown on me so much. First few listens I didn't really care for it. Now it's one of my favorites, I play it over and over. I love the little birdy sound in the background and "back up"

Go On I really liked this song when it released as a single, the music vid is still one of my favorites ever. The synth freakout is great, I just feel like this song is a little bit long after GttP. Perhaps my least favorite but still a great song, it feels very bleak to me in the midst of mostly optimistic songs

Everyday Very cool, very chill, I feel like I find more appreciation for this song every time I listen. The whistling is insane and I love the lyrics. Feels like a song I could play Everyday

Edge of the Edge I mean, it's a classic. Great lyricism from Panda, the do do do do part by Mr Boom feels like it's from another time. This is probably the most "60s pop" sounding song, very bouncy and sunny. Makes me wanna put down my phone (after I finish this post, of course)

In My Body Total mind melter. I'm not completely sold on the "stuck up on a branch" part yet, although it is fun to sing along to. The bass on this song is excellent and I love how sparse everything is. Someone else said that it sorta felt like a culmination of everything PB has been doing, I think I agree with that

Whirlpool One of the coolest songs ever and probably my favorite on the album. It's completely transportative. So many sounds evolve and sound like they're meticulously placed. Honestly reminds me a lot of MGMT's self titled album (Astro-Mancy?) lol, makes me wish SB produced that one too. Secretly very techno

Danger This one is in a dead heat with Whirlpool. I played the Madrid version so many times, which is more melancholy. I wasn't expecting the studio version to live up to that version, but it does. It's more jubilant but there's still that longing feeling. This song is exquisite and I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't been said already. Sometimes I replay the whole song just to hear the instrumental break after the first "Dangdangdang" part. I need a 10 hour version of that. The guiros are luscious

LitA It took me a while to come around on this one as well. Now it's been one I play frequently much like GttP. The lyrics are some of my favorite on the album. This doesn't give me as many chills as the last few tracks, but I think it will grow on me more with time

EBLTT It's the theme song for the PB x SB anime, a very bright and happy song. Might be the most accessible on the album? Idk. Love the use of guiro on this one too. It's a great closer

the album is phenomenal, been a go to car listen for me for the last week. the arrangements are so propulsive. i think others before have talked about how each little addition and subtraction feels so well placed to keep each song's momentum at perfect cruising speed. the stretch of it's in my body, whirlpool, and danger in particular makes me fall in love with music all over again. one of my favorite composer's, Meredith Monk, often talks about how a big part of her work is reminding herself to return to play. for me, listening to Reset is a total reminder to return to play, and from what i can hear (and from all the details you've provided Sonic) it sounds like the making of Reset was totally imbued with the spirit of play.

Sonic, i also want to say thank you for hanging on the board with us. i'm an extremely infrequent poster, but nonetheless having the opportunity to see other folks and you interacting, and to read your impressions and feelings about making this record (and others throughout the years), lends the record an intimacy, i think it lets all of us feel like we're a part of it in some small way. being someone who is a megafan (evolutionary progression from megafauna?) of many things, i like to think about the relationships between fans and creators a lot, and how the art object of fandom (in this case music) often, if not always, blends with the creator of the art object. i find the way that you've leaned into that blending by involving all of us on this board, by making it a social, to be such a special experience, and an extremely positive and holistic approach to that blend that seems to happen naturally in any fandom. especially for folks who currently live in or grew up in podunk parts of the world, having a point of connection with a creator you really admire is such a salve to those creeping senses of isolation and unimportance that the middle-of-nowhere vibe can foster.

at any rate, i know others have said as much before, but i really want to thank you and make sure you know how much your conversation is appreciated when you come around here. we're all big fans <3.

also happy to admit that you posting around here got me to listen to your work as spectrum and with spacemen 3, which has been a major source of inspo for me recently.

Love the album. Thank you SB. Thank you PB.

I’ve really enjoyed watching interviews crop up in this thread, plus Sonic’s constant trickle of tidbits and inspo. The Aquarium Drunkard interview in particular was spectacular and I really locked onto the message that there is progress to be had if you can replace your cynicism with optimism and get to work. One day at a time.

As always I project a lot onto the lyrics and the Reset stuff is no exception. I think in the early 2010s I remember Panda saying he was shifting focus lyrically from the personal to the universal, trying to find more common ground. So I think it’s okay to project & connect. Anyway the line in Danger that stands above the rest of the album, to me, is this : “and to the end of this cold landscape, I’ll keep coming back for more.”

To me that perfectly encapsulates my outlook right now, that I’ll never quit and keep on driving toward the goal no matter the hazards or obstructions. Reset makes it easier. What a treat. Thank you

Yeah - I wish it was like xmas everyday is a version of "Things like this (A little bit deeper)" from ATB= . Whirlpool uses a few elements from slowed down version of that song . I've (As has Noah) used that chord pair a bunch before too.
When I was doing that Xmas single I was messing around with some different percussion parts & I found a groovy rhythm that I really liked but did'nt use & made a little micro mix of it that became the basis for Whirlpool once we added bass , new keys , percussion , bongo etc . Happy to post that here if yr interested , just not really au fait with how to do that ....

OK . Maybe someone can message or email me about the mechanism for doing that .Sorry I'm not really au fait with these things .

I agree with you . Though fruits & flowers are two sides of the same mechanism ofcourse . I guess one perspective might be that fruit are essentially successful flowers : ) I feel music is a language . The language of the soul , another voice to converse thru .
This energy for sure is real .The power of positive thinking .That's where some of our most potent medicines lays, born out by the little understood but undeniable results of the placebo effect ..... something I wish we understood better . Positive thinking & belief cures many people .....

I love the "Engineer the Atmosphere" vibes in that song too. Noah took some of my lyric seeds like that , that he asked me to send him & sprinkled them with his turns of phrase into that awesome sort of opening mission statement . Like a distillation of everything we talked about aiming at with the record .

The songs order LP wise are pretty close to that they were written in & "Getting to the point" really is like an intro to the whole 'musical' that it's been in our minds . It's the kind of "Meet our hero - See him head off out on the morning fresh into a bright new day . Let's follow him on his journey....there's sure to be twists " sort of vibes .....had me bought in . Ears pinned & eyes peeled ...like lightning....

have a sweet oe there xp

love your words and perspectives shared, Pete.

i am not surprised to hear the song order of the album closely resembles the order in which they were made. it feels that way, in listening. the first song really feels like The First Song, and on it goes, adding layers, different perspectives and complexity and counterpoints. the last song feels like "andddd That's a wrap". this album is textbook "how to sequence an album" -- something to be studied... something made by wise students of the game

curious if there were (many) tracks that were made for the project and didn't make it, or if the intention was always 9 (6 + 3 with the Panda Panda Sonic pattern) and you chipped away at perfecting those

---

with my favorite track constantly shifting, i had to sit down and mark how many songs have been considered my "favorite" at some point so far:

pre-release: Whirpool snip
first listen: Edge of the Edge and Gettin' to the Point
next listens: In My Body
one week in: Livin' in the After
this week: Everyday and Danger

wanted to say thanks also to jetski for the Danger cover. it made me appreciate the song more, which is what good covers should do -- thanks for sharing.

i absolutely CANNOT get enough of the bassline on "Whirpool" - instant good mood when i lock into that, plus all that sparkle floating all over the place...wow, like sunbeams dancing across the ocean

I love the mounting tension of the song, with three verses then two then one between choruses (something’s comin round the bend), and the almost aggression of the “give it to me” in the chorus, and then the release of the outro, really neat song

Can I clarify if there were songs that inspired the main instrumental melodies for the songs without actual samples? You mentioned/posted, I believe, It's Growing by the Temptations for Everyday; and That Boy's Messin' Up My Mind by the Raindrops as a similar chord progression to Whirlpool (and Danger); also, the use of backing parts from your song Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper). A user on Reddit pointed out similarities to Let Her Dance by The Bobby fuller Four and Everything's Been Leading to This (and I can hear that, there's even a similar breakdown), and maybe someone's noted that here, too. Were there any specific touchstones or considered samples for Whirlpool (other than the two above, if at all), and for In My Body?

Here's the undersea backing for "whirlpool" . I think it's fairly low in the mix , but it gave a vibe to go in on.
Pretty sure the strings float up thru the mix . It gave a soret of reverby aura to what we added . Smelt like the 50s . Had that old fashioned dusty smell somehow .

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/e5de1b ... 319/060785

Yeah - there we're loops in all those originally . I wish we'd use "that boy" as a loop .... but not sadly... but it does use the same chords . Yeah , we had a couple of diff loops from " Let her dance " in "Everything's" , but didn't use them . It';s growing too we had the intro & then a loop of trhat rolling intro . For some reason my tracks we're more easy to take the samples out ....especially after Noah did some extra parts & I found those freaky little keyboard arpeggio riffs .

Loving this . Uke sounds killer

Wow, thank you so much for that stem! It's gorgeous.

Are you talking about This Boy by the Beatles? That intro always stands out, got a real doo-wop feel. Or maybe there's another song named That Boy I'm not familiar with.

I'm still wracking my brain about what the intended sample for In My Body might have been. :negative: Pete, if you can illuminate that (or anyone else) I will appreciate the solved mystery

I love your words too blindmowing . No . There we're no leftovers . Noah had one other loop & had a melody but it never got beyond that . We we're just happy to have a full LP tbh .n the circumstances .It felt that we had enough to achieve what we wanted to & the implications of the samples on the funds raising side would have been even worse . It was a tough time to be making a record & we were summoning up energies that I think we had finite reserves of by then . Was an epic trail....

I think this is the loop from the other jam he liked . Timmy boy by Timmy & the Persianetts

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/f2d500 ... 505/ce2bf9

Here's the OG awesome jam . Such awesome percussion track & singing..... Castanetty guys too...

yeah , that bass line & his bongo pattern in whirlpool . so good...I feel the same way xp

Man getting to the point is so powerful. Reading all these words about the album is making me appreciate it tenfold, and I've been busy as hell cuz I finally finished moving but man if this hasn't already been a massive soundtrack for my life right now...
The only other album in personal importance that felt this massive to me was when I discovered MPP and listened to that every time I rode my bike down to Jones Beach...
Seriously, this might be my favorite album ever made. Everything speaks to me on such a spiritual level, it feels like I was with you guys in the room coming up with these ideas they're so... personal? So introspective in such a cognitive, subconscious and fulfilling way...
The combination of the two greatest minds in music right now? I finally got my second win and now I "get" SP3 (specifically your stuff Pete, and I've gotten around to listening to ATB= and wow!!! really does feel like the prequel to Reset in a way, and it really blew me away too), like wow "I love you" is amazing...
Anyway sorry to get sidetracked, just feels like there's so much to appreciate. One of these days I totally feel inclined to do like a reader response deconstruction of this thing, just wanna write my heart out about it... thank you guys so much for all the magic and love

I've been trying not to overplay this and so have only listened every couple of days but man it is always such a treat and it keeps getting better and better even though I loved it the first time I heard it. it's been blossoming beautifully, the sequencing is so perfect and the songs and sounds are so euphoric, it's been really taking me to my happy place

Reset rations ! wow. Nice to read it's making you happy ! The neurons that fire together wire together! : ) Funny with the sequencing. I never was in on a record that was so easy to figure . It sort of defined itself as Noah did the tracks , they somehow we're already in order . Just a case of mixing in a little salt to keep the sugar tasting sweet .

Pete, in a effort to not overplay reset i started revisiting some old spacemen records i haven’t listened to in years and your old spectrum records, really nice vibes to revisit, I was curious about how you feel about all that material in retrospect. I’ve really been enjoying highs,
Lows and soul kiss these past 3 or 4 days

Hey Evan , Wow . Pleased you're enjoying the old jams . I'm pretty proud of those discs . Was a little against the grain back then & it's nice to see over time them finding their place .
