This album is almost TOO good. Whirlpool might be the best song ever created. Pete, can we get some official lyrics for it?

Genius says:
"Draggin' it deeper
And you'rе at the top"

but I'm hearing "your undertow" instead of "you're at the top"

yeah , u got it !

Whirlpool

Whirlpool’s pulling me
Deeper and down
Fallin’ so deep
Yes I ’m gonna drown drown drown

Headed down deeper
I was takin’ it slow
Fell in the deep end
And now I guess there’s no hope

I’m headed deeper
Headed below
Fallin’ so fast
And I was takin’ it oh so slow

Draggin’ me deeper
In your under tow
Takin’ me down fast
And lettin’ me up real slow

Whirlpool pullin’ me
Round and round
Downside’s up
And the upside’s down

I too wish we had more official lyrics, the GttP lyrics on Spotify seem pretty close if not accurate though

Gettin’ to the Point
Like a Coca Cola In the system
I’m lettin’ it engineer The atmosphere

Lightin’ up a smoker Into low gear ,
When I got a chance to do my thing
It’s sink or swim

Gettin’ to the point Can’t stand it , You just can’t stand it You drop a bomb
Gettin’ to the point You want it , You want to want it The get along

I’m broken Back to basics
I’m going back to nurse a bud And let it seed

Back up Back up Back it up Back it up again

Like it’s somethin’ stallin’ In the system,
Cranin’ a neck to hear The crystal clear

Startin’ up a motor Rev the engine ,
When I got a chance to do my thing It’s sink or swim

Gettin’ to the point Can’t stand it ,
You just can’t stand it You drop a bomb

Gettin’ to the point You want it ,
You want to want it . The get along

Danger
All that you do for me , Can’t you see what you do to me
Into the air like a fallen leaf , Get in a twist but it's probably brief

Out to the edge Of the subtle code
When will you come Come back to me
Only a limb With a broken bone
When can I give . Give it to you

Danger , When your grip Get a hold a me
I’m in danger , When the grip Get a hold a me
I got to Get back to that
Harmony

All that you do for me , Can’t you see what you do to me
Gave you a pot For the tea to brew
Give me a spot For the art to grow

Caught in the storm Of a body’s way
When can I go Go home to you

Saw through the swarm Of a cynical play
And now I'm back here Beggin’ for more

Danger
When your grip Gets a hold a me
I’m in danger When the grip Get a hold a me
I got to Get back to that
Harmony

Dang dang dang dang
Dang dang dang
Dang dang dang dang
Dang dang
I’m in danger

All that you do for me Can’t you see what you do to me
Glad for the day , Even when its gray
(You could) show me a place Where my thoughts can go
Played to the end Of a brittle tape
When will you play Play it for me
And to the end Of this cold landscape

I’ll keep coming Back for more

Of your danger
When your grip Get a hold of me
I’m in danger
When a grip Get a hold o me
I got to get back To that

Livin’ in the After
Loopin’ , On the carousel , On the carousel ,And they keep on ringin'
The final bell
I won’t tell , if you won’t tell , (keep it a secret)
It isn’t an easy sell , Livin’ in the after

Livin’ , But you just want more
But you just want more
But you just want (You got me lookin’)

Searchin’
But you can’t be sure
But you can’t be sure
So you take a dip In the deepest end ,
Takin’ it around the bend

(havin’ a good time)
Watin’ for you to say when
Livin’ in the after

I don’t even want to try , And its got me down
And i’m thinkin’ I might not come round
Got to take a day to think it through
And give me a night to make up my mind

Oo
Trustin’ , When it won’t go well
When it won’t go well
And we’re headed back to the drawin’ board
Don’t like what we’re headed for
(goin’ in circles)
So I’m strummin’ on a chord , Windin’ back disaster

I don’t even wanna try , And it’s got me down
So I’m thinkin’ I might not come round
Got to take a day to think it through
And give me a night to make up my mind
Boo hoo

Yes , the collapse....

Edge of the Edge
You took it out But you can’t put it back
You took it out But you can’t put it back again
You took a swig And then you take a crack
You’re runnin’ quick But you’re runnin’ off the track

One taste To break the fall
One wave To take us all To the shore
Can’t say it’s what you bargained for
It’s forever At the push of a button

(dowdowdowdow) Strange fruit Has a hidden rot
(dowdowdowdow) Took a taste And then you spit it back up
(dowdowdowdow) Consequences Of the inside track
(dowdowdowdow) Bad time And you’re runnin’ it all back

One taste To break the fall
One wave To take us all To the shore
Can’t say it’s what you bargained for
It’s forever At the push of a button

Up to the edge Of the edge Of the edge of the edge
of the edge of the edge of the edge of the edge
To to the edgeOf the edgeOf the edge of the edge
of the edge of the edge of the edge of the edge

(dowdowdowdow) You took it out But you can’t put it back
(dowdowdowdow) You took it out But you can’t put it back again
(dowdowdowdow) You feel it stingin’ And you wanna scratch
(dowdowdowdow) You found the box And you’re looking for the match

One taste To break the fall
One wave To take us all To the shore
Can’t say it’s what you bargained for
It’s forever At the push of a button

(dowdowdowdow) Strange fruit Has a hidden rot
(dowdowdowdow) Took a taste And then you spit it back up
(dowdowdowdow) You threw the rock Just to watch it splash
(dowdowdowdow) Sick as a dog And you’re diggin’ thru the trash

One taste To break the fall
(dowdowdowdow) One wave To take us all To the shore
(dowdowdowdow) Can’t say it’s what you bargained for
It’s forever At the push of a button

Up to the edgeOf the edgeOf the edge of the edge

In My Body
It’s in my body It’s in my body
It’s in my body It’s in my body

You don’t have to even tell me You know it
Theres no doubt in the mind
When theres a ruffle in your feather You show it
Theres no treasure to find

Every time I’m pullin’ it back , Keep on pullin’ it back , Keep on pullin’ it back

Sittin’ on some seed , So you sow it , One last time

It’s in my body It’s in my body
It’s in my body It’s in my body

Shuffle in your step , You can’t stop it
There’s a trail , Down your arm
Precious in your prep , You can’t drop it
There’s a ringin’ alarm

It’s in my body It’s in my body
It’s in my body It’s in my body

Stuck up on a branch
And I can’t get down

Go On
Somethin’s coming round the bend
Somethin’ buried in the text
One dude’s dead And another’s next
Somethin’s coming round the bend

Lifelong Sittin’ in a bank
Lifelong Sharpenin’ the axe
One dudes bread Is another’s tax
Lifelong Sittin’ in the bank

Spark one Steppin’ on the gas
Spark one With a tip to all
One dudes sweat is another’s balm
Spark one Steppin’ on the gas

Go on Go on Go on Go on - Give it to me

Somethin’s tippin’ on the edge
Daydream slippin’ off the bridge
One dude’s dream is another’s day
Somethin’s tippin’ on the edge

Somethin’ stirrin’ in the still
Reject here I’m asking why
One dudes scream Is another’s way
Somethin’ wavin’ you goodbye

Go on Go on Go on go on - Give it to me

Somethin’s comin’ round the bend
Somethin’ that I wanna know
Cold as snow Like a whip Let’s go
Somethin’s comin’ round the bend

Go on Go on Go on Go on Give it to me

You're gonna get , You got it comin’ now - Over and over and over

Everyday

I got somethin’ to tell you , I might even yell, yeah
There’s somethin’ I’m feelin' , thats settin’ me reelin’

Everyday, a little bit longer
Everyway, a little bit stronger
Every time, I’m gonna long for
Everything, we gotta be strong for

Everything’s Been Leading To This

Well, times are tough
And the draw is raw
We’re skiddin’ thru
A closin’ door
Got somethin’ to tell you that I can’t resist
Everything’s been leading to this

EVERYTHING'S
BEEN LEADING TO THIS

quick q for Mr. Boom: a while ago, you mentioned the LP's song about itself. maybe i'm a bit dense, but which song is it? Everything's Been Leading To This? thanks x

Thanks for the lyrics sb!

I was hearing
"Gettin to the point you wanted,
It's what you wanted"

which I also like a lot. actually maybe I didn't hear that but when it was stuck in my head later that's what my brain turned it into

Haha . I forgot I said that . Yeah , you got it . On the record ? Everything did lead to it , right ?

Really , it's a song about the here & now . About my theory about just heading up every day with as much good humour & openheartedness as you can & how magic happens once you do that . It's a song about the rewards of that & having hope & patience and about finding purpose when the chips are down . Sometimes in life it can be hard to figure ones purpose , and that song was about feeling this might be the moment , or one of them , it was all leading up to ..... I hope you can hear how that feels on it .

I also think of it on several sub levels
My 'work' & friendship with Noah , as awesome as it has always been , felt like we were perhaps always just always moving towards this record. It was one of the last songs written & I already knew my feelings about these songs , and I thought it was apt in the context to celebrate the moment & it just made sense it would end the record .
You might notice on the lp Noah has 6 vocal leads , I have 3 . We figured the best way to keep freshening up & contrasting the vibe was to have 2 of Noahs songs then 1 Pete song & repeat the pattern. Once we figured that part of the puzzle , EBLTT could only really fall at the end of the LP & the solution to the puzzle revealed answers to other puzzles automatically .

I enjoyed the meta commentary on your musical relationship, that's what I thought it was about. Also a very AC kind of lyric, lots of Dave and also Josh commentary on their own music process and band relationships. Obviously Noah has done that a fair bit in the past too, even if his lyrics are less directly specific these days. Great to hear you add to that theme in your way.

I also wondered whether Getting To The Point was a similar kind of commentary on the process, it really works if so. It's like, "listen up, this is our intention for the record". Here's a sample loop, here's our new melodies, let's go. It's also probably the most immediate sounding song, perfect opener.

Yeah - It was the first song Noah did , and he used a few of my lyric ideas .We had been talking a lot about our observations and fears for society & our planet and I think Noah fed a lot of what we discussed into his lyrics . I don't think anything he says on the LP is a new theme for him though , but he said it much more clearly .
The tink tink sound is an empty bottle of my favourite Portuguese wine "Quinta das Amoras" . One euro eight five a bottle from a supermarket ... Funny thing in Portugal , the lower priced wines can often be the most drinkable to my taste....

Oh yeah, thanks so much for the lyrics Pete!

Edit: great interview, lots of little nuggets

they said they're gonna figure out what to do with the live show next week (from whenever this was recorded). But that it's going to be minimal and very mobile. It cool to hear PK talk about Buckminster Fuller and about the artist names Panda Bear and Sonic Boom on a record sounding like an anime or something lol. And hearing a bit about the creative process of the album

the words which come to mind when i think of this album are "Joy" and "Balance"

this is a perfectly curated 9-course meal: every sonic morsel adds an essential element to the experience. the first track really feels like a thesis statement, an entry point explaining the basis of the aesthetic concepts. it's simple and inviting and invigorating. it gets to the point. immediately i want more. this isn't going to be a quick dine and dash.

Pete's songs are palette cleansers and integral counterpoints/weights, complimentary flavors to Panda's sugar rush vocals and melodies. the dynamics in his songs and voice emphasize just how complexly jubilant Panda's songs/vocals are, just as Panda's songs highlight the mysterious deep depths of Pete's songs. and yet at the same time, within the Pete-led tracks we get the perfect balance of Panda's backing vocals -- this is just par for the course... every track seems to be leveled and balanced, flavors blended and complimentary to one another. the old and the new, future and past, all things seem to be held perfectly in balance/tandem with one another. it's stabilizing. one can be "reset" with such sturdy ground to stand on, with high and low frequencies guiding us towards the centermost point, with equal pressures coming from past and future to guide us into perfect Presence.

the closing track is a dense dessert that packs all the best flavors into one noisy platter -- a celebration of the yin-yang between the two artists, a joyous collaboration and fusing of their best sides...

i'm in love with the textures and sonic details in this record...it can be enjoyed immensely just listening to surface level elements -- the dominant melodies and instruments and leading vocals -- but going deeper, it hits the very middle of the central nervous system when one starts to zone in on all the little sounds popping out of the corners and swimming beneath the surface... i'm a sucker for all those 'happy sounds' they've added: hand claps, sleigh bells, wood blocks, cow bell(?!), toys... it really is children's music. i've played the album a few times for my two year old and we got to dancing and smiling in no time at all. it's a complete joy, through and through! i've also played it for my dad and his joy was palpable. he loved it.

as for specific songs... "In My Body" has been stuck in my head the most... i find myself singing that song to myself regularly already. it is so immersive and deep that it feels like a ten-minute song even though it's not even four minutes long. vocally and atmospherically just out of this world. "Livin in the After" has just totally won my heart. the spirit and joy in that track is incredible...every sound, every vocal just bursts with brightness. every song though...i could go on about every song. there are elements in each song that have brought me to completeness and pure joy. truly a wonder, this album.

Awesome . For children of all ages : ) So pleased your enjoying it & our intentions & our beliefs about how we put it together seem to be felt . You got it exactly w my tracks . sorta palette cleansers ready for the next phase . Counterpoints/weights is a great way to perceive it . Thank you for the digest xp

Interesting reading and great to get that perspective on the creation.

Just wanted to share a couple of things that have chimed with me and by coincidence, your comments about the dynamic changes and propulsion are exactly what I was going to mention.

I've been really struck by how the songs develop and build in a way that reminds me of 'tracky' house music. They have many repeating and recurring elements but they're not 'repetitive' as to ever go flat. The songs do feel very 'sequenced' but more that they're so chunky and like 'efficient'. I don't mean that word in a critical way at all. Maybe it's a shit descriptor. Maybe effective is better but it's not just that, it's that they feel so economical. There's always just enough to keep you hooked and wanting more.

A lot of the keyboard lines and pads/strings (like on Everyday) seem to kick in just when you want that little bit extra, and you feel like the song moves into a different mode. And then when it shifts back, you really enjoy that change, too. There are loads of moments like that, too many to mention and probably loads too subtle for me to have picked up yet, but it's definitely something I can feel and really enjoy. The keyboard parts also feel as much about rhythm as melody, like in Danger. There's 'nothing to it' (on the surface) but that one ringing note adds a euphoric urgency.

I could go on but that's enough for now.

Just wanted to give my appreciation for this reading, Stan. I think Panda’s always been really good at the songwriting organized like dance music, but it’s been getting better and better as of late. Maybe it’s because of where pop music’s been lately. He just has a knack for repeating just enough with a bit of variation and some extra flourishes to propel that dance forward. I think Cranked off of Buoys is a fantastic example, and I think In My Body is the outstanding example on this record.

The little nuggets of context we’re still getting makes this record so special. It’s timeless on its own but the timeline we’ve had around it feels four-dimensional. The gift that keeps on giving…

love reading pete’s posts and everyone’s thoughts and interpretations. There’s just so much to come back to in the songwriting, production and lyrics of this album, I’m finding new things to appreciate with every listen. as much as I love the sample loops, it’s those extra touches - the synth flourishes and percussion accents and swirling atmosphere - that’s really bringing it all together for me. I also felt the same thing Stan did about the first track, it really kicks things off in a great way and just lets you know immediately what the record’s going for.

Thanks Pete for sharing all the lyrics and details! i love that background about Everything’s Been Leading to This, those lyrics resonate with me a whole lot <333

I tossed off a little acoustic cover of Danger and wanted to share. tough one to sing, it goes from way down low to way up high! was fun to tackle it tho :)

just wanna say pete, yall made something real special here. as a fan of both of your outputs, this is such a comfortable listen. its deeply psychedelic, bright, sweet, and chilled out, all at once. tastes like fruit candy!! takes classic, unnistakable elements from both of tour styles and merges them together in the most satisfying way, truly a melding of the minds. i always loved the pulsating droney synths you use, and they are put to excellent use here.

i get kinda bummed when people talk about it like its just a panda album. people are glossing over the fact that we get a beautiful collab from two of the major psych legends from the last few decades (and for my money, all time!!) between this and the last solo record you've been on a roll. great work, and many many thanks.

been having a rough time, and the way people often communicate these days has been deeply alienating to me. but ya know what? we get jams like this and thats been bringing light to my life. this time around, for me, you have reached, dare i say it, the goldilox zone!!!

I tossed off a little acoustic cover of Danger and wanted to share. tough one to sing, it goes from way down low to way up high! was fun to tackle it tho :)

i get kinda bummed when people talk about it like its just a panda album. people are glossing over the fact that we get a beautiful collab from two of the major psych legends from the last few decades (and for my money, all time!!)

hear hear! very true I feel sonic's signature all over this record, he is a key element to what makes the music work so well and hit so hard and it's just as much his record as Noah's. golidlocks zone for dayz

Now it's my turn to cry . Blurry peepered typing this . This is so beautiful to hear . Your voice is really great . And the whistling.....pff.... just perfect . It's such a treat hearing this song in a form apt for it's natural environs - outside gatherings . the street . the shade tree . I'm getting spoilt at the moment , but this has made my day . Big style .. thank you buddy xp

just wanna say pete, yall made something real special here. as a fan of both of your outputs, this is such a comfortable listen. its deeply psychedelic, bright, sweet, and chilled out, all at once. tastes like fruit candy!! takes classic, unnistakable elements from both of tour styles and merges them together in the most satisfying way, truly a melding of the minds. i always loved the pulsating droney synths you use, and they are put to excellent use here.

i get kinda bummed when people talk about it like its just a panda album. people are glossing over the fact that we get a beautiful collab from two of the major psych legends from the last few decades (and for my money, all time!!) between this and the last solo record you've been on a roll. great work, and many many thanks.

been having a rough time, and the way people often communicate these days has been deeply alienating to me. but ya know what? we get jams like this and thats been bringing light to my life. this time around, for me, you have reached, dare i say it, the goldilox zone!!!

pff...thank you .... that's awesome to read .I'm touched .Deeply psychedelic, bright, sweet, and chilled out are my aspirational models ... And maybe there's still time...! : )
A Panda album ? That's all fine with me . I get all the joy I need out of working with Noah & being any part of it tbh . Sometimes it's just enough to enable something you deeply love . I can't accurately sum up how fun & good that feels tbh . But I think it comes thru in the record & was part ofd our vortex with this .
That's no good yr having a rough time .Just communicate on the level your comfortable with .I think the way we communicate can start to define us , for better and for worse , so It's an important consideration . But don't just suffer please . email me if you'd like some help talking so someone trained more about it . xp

Aww thanks PK I’m so glad you enjoyed it :) I had a similar feeling playing it, I want to get a couple friends together with some shakers and percussion to really make it come to life. it’s so fun to take the electronic whirlwind of this album and try to recreate it acoustically. despite the heady psychedelicness of it all it really is perfect for a little tossed off casual jam too :guitar:

Nice . Yeah , it shows that the song is kind of a standard to me . I know Noah & I both consider it the jewel in the setting of the LP . Really awesome to hear that moment kind of being born . Not everyones gonna be able to sing it I guess , but you pulled it off with a really nice vibe .
