I've only recently gotten around to listening to live versions of BBCM and it's sooooo much better.

I'm so grateful for the ATP rehearsal because listening to the EP again today, I am staggered at how limp Jabba turned out. It's absolutely anaemic, and I make no apologies for the comment. I would love to know how it went from being this ecstatic joyful and intense banger with a blistering beat to being Abercrombie playlist diluted weak lemon drink pish. I've never posted this anywhere elsewhere ever but: smh

I actually think it came out pretty good. All finished songs are a far cry from the ATP versions. You really should be comparing it to the Warsaw or other recent versions.
The real travesty is how Principe came out

i mean... principe real and jabberwocky definitely came out a little more subdued and slick and on the glossy end of the spectrum, but the concept of the work changed, no? the album and EP are part of this weird kinda videogame inferno world that demands a certain level of slickness throughout. versus the original ATP demos which are more in the line of the earlier "reworking weird stock samples and recognizable breaks" part of the concept, i think.
for what it's worth i do also prefer the original house organ jam city thing and explosion-y soul groove (respectively) for those two––especially that "mine, mine, mine, miiine... mine..." line, damn that was hot––but i kinda feel like the new versions fit the final aesthetic better, and we do have both

Jabber didn't need to go on as long, he could have easily cut the last beat drop. he pulled back all the weird pitched vocal stuff which i fuckin loved. the whole album became way more subdued than the original versions, i really miss those screams on No Man's Land those first rounds of shows he really channeled the whole death vibe.

Aren't the finalised tracks a reflection of an intention to create some form of pop perfection, though? Sure, I'm making a massive assumption here, but there is, at first blush, a beautiful simplicity to the songs, repetition galore, and an emotive pull contained within each song. There's an easy attraction. It's a difficult thing to achieve, the mixture of musically interesting songs, cool sounding and intellectually stimulating, and the ticking of pop genre boxes. That's the difference between the pre-LP and ATP versions and the finalised tracks for me; one's the visceral idea, one's the pop-plan. And one is as stimulating as the other. It's just a matter of what you're into at that time.
