I mean you've got all these chilled out beats in between all this crazy abrasive stuff. so siiick
Pretty unique songs, too. For instance, Bat You'll Fly. There's no way that would even fit in on a different album.

I listened to it last night, it had been a while since I last gave it a spin. That record is really special ! Chocolate girl, Alvin Row, April and the .. !
Chocolate girl really got to me, these songs are really special
It's really impressive when you know how old they were when they did it

seriously.... I'm at the age now where they were making this stuff and I keep having to remind myself that no, it's not normal that I would have made my magnum opus at this age.......

what's most impressive about this is the lyrics (to penny dreadfuls in particular). how does something like that come out of a 16-year-old's head?!

I have a friend I've known since we were 14 who was writing stuff like that at 15. except he's extremely depressed and doesn't have the motivation to keep any of his work. he destroys it. I wish he didn't, he's a super talented writer

Do you guys think Pb can still play drums like he did on spirit? Like of you handed him some brushes and sat him down at a kit would he be able to break out the crazier parts of La Rapet? Probs not lol,but imagining him playing that, especially as an 18 year old... Wow

Has he ever talked about receiving formal lessons for drums or did he just teach himself?
Seems kinda crazy that he has this one album's worth of super technical drumming and then nothing else he's done has really touched on it aside from CHz maybe

I don't think that he practis a lot of the old tunes. When I saw him last summer, I asked him if he would someday play any of the PP by any chance. He said : "aha I don't remember * how to play them"

LA RAPET....just how?! how the hell did they create that tune. An absolute masterpiece. It completely destroys me every time i hear it. Aveys voice is perfect on that song.

I was just listening earlier and reading lyrics online
Someone mentioned it above, but the lyricism on this album really is unreal for the time in Avey's life it was written. Unbelievable... I wish I had half the word smithing prowess he possesses

I love spirit. I associate it with a very specific time in my life. So fucking brutal/magic. it's always such a painful listening experience emotionally. There's so much sadness and desperation and pain, I feel like Avey's vision must have been so clear and intense when he wrote these songs. I've never heard anything like them. It's like he was peering into the heart of existence, and it changed him irreversibly. Kind of how I feel whenever I listen to it...
Also PANDA BRUSH DRUMS ALL DAY!!!!!
I wonder what it felt like to be either panda/avey when they were working on and listening to these songs together at the time they were being made... Think i'm about to pop this baby on and die as a child in my mind now. Love u animals. Be careful out there.

simply magical. like black-and-white forest children in grass skirts retreating to their underground hole and lighting candles sitting in a circle and laughing

I remember trying to listen to "Spirit They've Vanished" over one of those FM transmitters for playing music on your car stereo and hearing it completely garbled because the frequencies were too high to transmit.

this is true. like without alvin row it's a nice, confident, and well-done debut.
but then alvin row comes in like a blast of divine truth for you godless heathens

anyone else that has it on vinyl notice that funny little symbol in the middle of the record?
Im thinking about getting it tattooed on my forearm. I asked avey what it means on instagram, and he responded "Avey tare!!" lol
can you post a pic of the symbol? my ac vinyl collection is small, yet. :!
I'd love to take a peek at the symbol though, I'm a big glyph nerd

surely one of the greatest albums ever. this record brings me to a totally unique place--a place of innocence and youth and laughter and magic. i don't think i'll ever tire of it.
also, how the hell are the synths so great here? i especially love the bass synth that sort of bubbles under every song (like during "she ran out in natuuuuuuuuuuuuuure")

It's cool someone brought up Boces by Mercury Rev cuz I always thought the vocals on 'Boys Peel Out' are mixed in a similar way to Aveys on Spirit
