i really like the harpsichord part of Defeat, I was surprised to see some very negative reactions toward it. If I have issues with the new version, it's the modulator on Avey's voice in part 1 and it kind of sounds like the final act was slowed down a bit. Everything else is A-OK.

Is it just me or do I get slight Garden of Delete vibes from this?

Slight... as in autotune vocoder inclusion.

Whoops! Meant Age Of. Think the similarities are clearer if you listen to the last OPN tour where he had a full band.

May check-out... only gave "Age Of" one listen through, not that I didn't like it.

Hearing the material in its live form gave me a greater appreciation of it. Breathes new life into it. Highly recommend
The setlist for meow wolf on setlist.fm lists “new songs”. Do we have confirmation yet as to whether they are all ones played in Tulsa, or different new ones?
someone said that they played 8 new songs at meow wolf, and only 4 of those were played in tulsa (defeat, downdowndown, 24, cherokee), so 4 more new songs were debuted at meow wolf for a total of 12 so far this tour (including music box material). they also said that one of the meow wolf debuts sounded like a reworked prester john, and another one was a song deakin has been playing at his recent solo shows. this is all coming from one person tho so i wouldn't call this 100% confirmed. someone recorded the meow wolf show so we will find out for sure later this week

Totally. I loved GoD around its release but after I saw it live I realized I didn't "get it" until then. Seeing OPN live feels like you're getting a peak of the very cutting edge of music lol

that was me! i realized that they debuted another song at meow wolf. it was avey-led, and lyrics were something like "let the good night shine" / "let the good lady shine" and then something about being a passerby. that brings it to 13 new songs in total. i took pretty detailed notes at both tulsa and meow wolf so i'd wager they're pretty accurate, but it's always possible i missed something. anyway, i'm finally home and my head is no longer scrambled from traveling and excitement so i'll repost the meow wolf setlist here for reference:
1. in the flowers
2. 24
3. new song (avey-led, "let the good night shine" / "let the good lady shine")
4. new song (prester john?)
5. native belle
6. new song (avey-led, "i wouldn't miss a moment's bliss")
7. defeat
8. on a highway
9. new song (deakin-led, "lost one to cancer, two to sorrow, three to losing patience")
10. new song (panda-led, "this is just for you to know / i wanted just for you to know / appreciate, you cannot wait, we'll see you out there / we'll see you there")
11. grass
12. banshee beat
13. cherokee

that clip only has the last section where they sing "Prester John is breaking dooooown toooown" but it's at a faster tempo and Panda is laying down a solid groove behind it. Def a different feel, and I kinda hope that the first section still retains more similarity to the original.

Cheers. That sounds utterly terrible. Hopefully I don't hate the final version, which I probably haven't listened to in over a year as is

lol is that like some hypochondriac version of demoitis? to decide without listening that you're going to hate the studio version of a bootleg you haven't heard in months because of a positive verbal description of a more recent bootleg

Why hahahah
It sounds sick
Also, I think Defeat is as a whole magnificent, especially the third section, but i feel like they should figure out some way to make it more cohesive... I agree with everyone saying it kind of lacks the cohesion it had at the music box show, even though i love basically all of it

the moment they start playing the build up part again, is the moment the 2nd part all comes together.
is super dope, I love when Panda sings the verse over the chorus part

Hyperchondriac version of demoitis is pretty funny.
But ya probably because everything about Prestor John at the music box was perfect and i'm far more 'protective' of it than Defeat. And that the changes described sound quite fundamental. And also that I wasn't being 100% serious, as I never am on this site.
i'm not hot on what they've done with DownDownDownDown so far. I really hoped they would keep that repeating sample from the music box version. that made the song for me. that and how the two voices singing harmonies were kinda staggered/offset and interlaced like a thread instead of in the new version how they're sung simultaneously. the song sounds so nondescript now. also that beautiful synth in the second half of the music box version?! come on man!

Prester John Has become one of my favorites. I fucking love panda bear man. Love his heavy presence on this album

That sample was great, but its way too obvious if you listen to jazz music. Its Pharoah Sanders' Astral Traveling. So I'm glad they switched it up by playing chords. But yeah that second half synth was really cool, I hope it comes back. Who knows what the final one will turn up as!

Not sure if this is the place to ask but is anyone else having problems with the boots on their iPhones? I use iTunes Match and when I play the tracks about half way through it skips to the next song?

the Meow Wolf boot, like, REFUSES to sync to my phone via iCloud Music Library it’s so weird.

Thanks for the response! I thought I was crazy. The thing is I listened to the Tulsa boot all the way through the first day it was released and everything went smoothly. Same with the Meow Wolf boot. Now both sets skip halfway through when I sync them to my phone? I can't seem to find out what's causing this...

Saw them play yesterday and it was incredible! Very excited to hear what they do with the new batch of songs. Lots of floaty textural parts, makes you get lost in the mixxxturrrree.
And the last section of Defeat had me floored. Its like the japan performance of "I Remember Learning How To Dive" with the super stretched out vocals, but has the somberness of "Penny Dreadfuls" and some beautiful ambient synths as a bed for it all. The back and forth with avey/panda was very unique. It felt like a very dark movie scene. I was in another place hearing it. Middle section was really weird though, hope that changes.

Ok so I wonder if Deakin's track DownDownDownDown is influenced by this song by Aphrodite's Child BECAUSE I discovered this song through a DEAKIN DJ Set/playlist.

If AC was a new band whose first album was Painting With, I would expect their next album to have songs that sound like Cherokee and [Out There]
I mean that as a compliment btw

I really hope so. The new tracks sound equally naturalistic, and I think it would be a good fit. Loving so much new music from the bois!
