i know there have been big fans of this boot from day one but i gotta say that a lossless soundboard elevates this to absolute top tier

I remember chatting with Dave on IG about this show and this is when he gave me the names to the songs! I was sew happy when I saw him drop this and honest to god I wish this would go vinyl! Thereโs literally 3 different versions of see happy/hors and everyone of them are so damn good!

it's funny, i was insane about the original midnight special boot and thought the studio version lost some of the magic, but listening to this soundboard version makes me think the low quality boot kind of added to the mystery because the soundboard and studio versions sound more similar to me.

You're not wrong. Still much prefer the Mothlight version but they sound a lot closer than I would've wagered.

That's what I've been saying, half the "magic" you get from boots is because it's lo-fi and blown out and you fill in the gaps in your head

yeah ngl I feel like this just solidified my belief that the album version of all these songs was all i needed. really awesome performance but this fandom is funny because we pick weird favs and obsess over the really deep cuts like this and PBvsGR demos, when to me the studio versions really are more preferable and more rewarding over a bunch of listens. like Sew Happy here sounds way better lofi or studio - to me

i can understand the argument about listening preferences. i personally don't love soundboards because the crowd noise is an important part of a boot for me and not hearing it makes the pacing weird. same for the demos, combined with have a slightly improved energy / lack of commitment since it's not a true performance maybe?
a really important point though is that people obsessed with the grim reaper ATP boots and the mothlight recordings as soon as they came out, so having a higher fidelity version available a few years later was like magical wish granting. combine that with the tiny glimpse into PB songwriting with the slight lyrical changes on the demos (seriously you never ever hear him changing words!) and it's a no-brainer for why the fandom is so interested. i don't think you see the same universal devotion to high-quality soundboards of other arbitrary shows that the band's released.

I feel like I have reverse demoitis with this - when I heard the original boot I enjoyed it but didn't listen too much or get attached, but now listening to this Midnight Special I feel like that strummy visiting friends/always you quality to the live version was totally lost in the studio in a way that changed the entire song for me. and Sew Happy is pretty much a completely different song from HORS and I prefer it. kinda wish this boot was just the album tbh

the studio lost the vocals of the original midnight special. unironically, check out the midnight special from brooklyn recently. holy fuck, he recaptured the mothlight beauty and went further with it, making it like 10 mintues AND he screams ITS THRILLING ME NOWWWW like he does. in studio it's a nice chilled out atmospheric song but originally the way he performed it was just so cathartic which i think is the case for a lot of ac's mellow songs, like 2004 loch raven was chill but had the werewolf vocals over it the entire time.

Taken Boy was 10000% better at Mothlight over studio, for sure. No argument there.

having heard studio taken boy first, i find the mothlight version's beat too distracting (too overpowering in the mix, but i'm sure a live mix is harder to really tweak) and makes the song seem more static, linear & almost unfinished to my ears.

You're right. Out of all the songs here, Taken Boy sounds the most 'bare idea sang over a loop'. I would say everything from this set except Midnight Special sounds better in studio

Listening to this again now I've turned the corner from being absolutely cunted by Covid and I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, what a joyful and intense performance of Midnight Special this is. So lucky to have this, these scratchy, brooding chords that swell up perfectly with the vocals. Christ to fuck. Yes.

this and the panda boots from 2013 and 2017 are my favorite AC-related things in the 2010s. funny how that works.
