These tracks are awesome! I love how goofy Gnip Gnop is and the beat for Hounds is really interesting. Anyone want to take a crack at the lyrics?

Gnip Gnop is so good. I thought it was annoyingly repetitive at first but now I love it. It was a great song live, too.

here's my shot at Gnip lyrics
GNIP GNOP
---------
G-nip G-nop
I don't wanna ever stop
With G-nop G-nip
You gotta ease on the beginners
You can't relax? and you have to rush? the challenge
Well there's no hate
Just love to keep ya gnippin'
When we were younger
We took up the fabulous game
G-nip and G-nop
It's the sound of the rhythm we play
That noisy rattle means
Someone will triumph today
Maybe a spoke? It's the way that you look at what's pretty?
Linked in one mind if we master the infinite volley
Going the distance and watching the ball while it's flying
Feeling the effortless pool while we're swinging the paddle
None of us wants it to fall so we're working together
G-nip G-nop
The beautiful green top where
My mind is ???
The concentration's locked on
G-nop G-nippin'
Are focused on the poppin'
I feel entranced on
The easy way to hop
I feel me movin'
G-nip G-nop is cool when
You want to loosen
The motion of the bones
You feel the ball that's
Extended from the paddle
And send it off with
A spell that gets your heart goin'
G-nip G-nop
The beautiful green top where
My mind is ???
The concentration's locked on
G-nop G-nippin'
Are focused on the poppin'
I feel entranced on
The easy way to hop
G-nip G-nop
I don't wanna ever stop
With G-nop G-nip
You gotta ease on the beginners
You can't relax and you have to rush the challenge
Well there's no hate
Just a little bit a..
When we were younger
We took up the fabulous game
G-nip and G-nop
It's the sound of the rhythm we play
That noisy rattle means
Someone will triumph today
Maybe a spoke? It's the way that you look at what's pretty?

the bass on natural selection kinda turns me off..especially the riff that comes in after "resting in your hands"
for me, it's the way he sings. it feels unnatural, ironically, and just like he's going through the motions of songwriting instead of focusing on writing a good song. the lyrics feel contrived too. yes, it's fun live, and easy to dance hard to, but that doesn't really make it good when im just listening to the album
Sorry to invade this thread with discussion on the album as a whole. gnip gnop is pretty fun
The way he sings is what makes the song for me tho, personally
Dave wrote better songs, but Noah's vocals were off-the-charts good on pretty much every track. Definitely the definitive singer on PW

noah definitely has the more technically impressive vocals on the album, if that's what you're arguing.
but dave's songs feature noah more sparingly and noah's songs are all hocketing so i don't know if he can really be the definitive singer of the record... the way they play off of each other is the definitive vocal sound of the record i guess, even though i actually like dave's voice and melodies more most of the time.

genuinely curious how to rip music and not have it be like that. feel free to pm me drbsl if you feel like explaining it
edit: waveforms looked like this while ripping. i never changed any settings after installing audacity and the balance on my receiver is directly in the center. didn't know how to fix it so i just used it like this

I can take a crack at mastering them some when I get home to see if I can get rid of some of the noise and center it more.
[edit] Working on it now though I'm not sure what I'm doing is going to sound any better. It sounds more hollow now rather than full of bass. I'm going to keep tinkering with it and see what I can get...just kinda hard to determine what will sound good without a second pair of ears.
[edit 2] Alright I think I got Gnip Gnop sounding a LOT better. Lowered some of the low end frequencies to balance out with the higher end, the bells and synths are more clear, the vocals have more clarity and most importantly, the sounds are centered rather than being entirely to the left or right channel. Anyone interested I can shoot a link, working on Hounds of Bairro now.

i think the lyrics for gnip gnop being about the game is really funny for some reason.
i've been watching gnip gnop videos for fun and it seems like such a silly game

I think it's about ping pong, not gnip gnop... re: the lyrics, "paddle" and "volley".
Also isn't ping pong a kind of reverb? My guess is ping pong is in a similar vein to "on delay" - being songs that refer to the actual making of their music.
I'll also say that there are definitely lines in Hounds that make me think that song is about their creative process. "this stuff blasts" etc... (there's many others)
All in all, I love both of these songs so much. And I love that their themes and subjects are simple.

i thought it was "take care with that mission, because this stuff lasts" kinda in line with "get it right, cuz the moment closes in, time runs out.." and "plans will make or break this old man, beware of those itches, cuz once its passed you can't go back"

Jimmy Mack is a cover. The two songs he's referring to were mentioned in interviews where Avey and Panda said they each wrote 8 songs for the recording sessions. My hunch/hope is they'll be released as part of a post-tour EP like they did with Fall Be Kind. Avey vaguely alluded to that in the reddit AMA

i knew jimmy mack was a cover, but i thought/hoped they might do a studio session where they recorded it. that's good to hear though, new material is always fantastic.

Gnip Gnop is probably my favorite so far of this era besides Burglars and LitG. The "Gnip Gnop I don't ever want to stop" part always gives me a rush
I also think the song is at least partially about their songwriting with this album. Like going back and forth with the hocketing and never wanting to stop. "None of us want it to fall so we're working together"
