I extremely love how brooding Lablakely Dress is. Very erotic but also a bit scary and disorienting. In terms of the 'soundspace', where is the song really coming from? The vocals seem to be whispered through a metallic ventilation grill up in the some high corner of a greenhouse. Those 'organ' drone chords are like a very warm, soft bed - but a bed of soil. The song makes me feel like a little root vegetable growing in the night, but the heat is sweltering and it's sticky and humid. I need some water.

every few years i’ve tried to listen and see if i “get it”, but it’s still never clicked. last time was prob 7 or 8 years ago, and it was the obligatory “let’s try this after eating a bunch of acid” listen and it was so goddamn irritating, i didn’t even make it halfway through lol.. i don’t mind the harsh frequencies, maybe it’s just always felt unfinished in a way.. come to think of it, it’s the only album i’ve never made it front-to-back in one sitting. it has some great moments though.

It's been years, but I put on Bad Crumbs and Living Toys yesterday and it was so good. I think the sequencing hurts the album but it must be really hard sequencing so many short songs

I'm firmly of the opinion that the world needs less "Living Toys" detractors.

Living toys is one of my favs off the record!! listening to it on a good sound system at a local store is where i really understood some of what geo was doing on these songs, the deep note at the end of every verse on this song contrasted with how tinny it sounds on the surface really opens it up, and its just classic animal collective hold hold tension and never release type shit

I wish every album had at least some danse-level chaos. Panda’s drumming on essplode is probably my favorite AC moment

AC are well-versed in the art of edging :negative:

Never understood the hate. At least one half of the album is a masterpiece and melodically, I even find it easily enjoyable. Essplode, Ahhh Good Country, Throwin the round ball, Lablakely Dress, Runnin the round ball, Meet the light child and In the singing box are my favs.

im obviously a fan considering my username..

really dig the stuff they made during that era. throwin the round ball is my favorite, second is meet the light child. everything else is obviously great too. it's also the first release that wasn't originally intended to be a solo album or whatever and its really impressive they were able to make something so captivating so early on. dont really understand the hate. I get its kind of a lot to stomach at first but I find it really immersive and even on first listen I really dug it. also I really fuck with manatees as well as that shade of green

sorry to dredge up old threads but i have a question - is there a difference between the fatcat spirit/danse (specifically danse) than other versions of the album? rusty santos is listed as a mixer or engineer for that specific release but not the others

I think rusty remixed it for that double CD reissue and every issue since on any format including digital has used his mix. I haven't investigated how much of a difference there is to the original catsup plate release but I assume he did a bit of a rebalance without really changing the overall sound

Hope people don't mind me sharing this but I made some art while listening to Danse last year and this is what Danse looks like in my head I guess:

Awesome! The muted hues, vibrant, jagged edges and ghostly shapes of the album are represented very well.

Perfect choice of grey for their most urban sounding album

I did a subtractive comparison of the rips of both versions in audacity (basically you invert the waveform of one, then subtract it from the other and you can see if there's anything different. It's really cool, techmoan has a video where he shows how to do it here: https://youtu.be/f-QxLAxwxkM?si=zmEVKEdazPEZBA9J&t=1015)
There was an ever so slight tinny echo of the recording left over, suggesting that the rusty version tones down the highs ever so slightly. It's really not that noticeable though when just listening back and forth.

It's taken me a long time to arrive at this thought, but it kind of feels like an evil Pavement record? Kind of makes more sense to me after listening to that two hour live Pavement ep they did for O'Brien system
