One of the most important foods to me. Not nonsense, just a bagel with butter. If made right it's so many things at once. Crunchy, crispy, soft, cushiony, just delicious. AC's music being just so whimsical makes complete sense now since its from the same source that gave us the fucking bagel!!! If i'm gassing up bagels I dont give a f*ck. I'm jersey girl!!!

Had salmon and cream cheese bagel for my breakfast this morning. Really enjoyed it. Also had two thick Swedish yoghurt, strawberry flavour. Two cups of Joe. Had a turkey and cracked pepper roll for my lunch and a crisp Granny Smith apple which dissolved my teeth. Small lemon drizzle cake and cup of tea around 3pm. Now getting ready for nduja and mascarpone ravioli for dinner and a Weihenstephaner wheat beer.

Example: what fundamentally made early hip hop exciting to people was that it was the artistic howl of the most underprivileged parts of the country. The music was just as much about what it represented as what it was aesthetically; you could reasonably argue that the distinction between those facets is impossible to accurately judge. That sort of cultural context can totally transcend how good you think a given record is in a vacuum—what score you'd give it out of ten or what have you—and that's entirely fine. It isn't obscuring some otherwise platonically pure evaluation of the music, because such a thing does not actually exist.

I want to come back to this statement because 1) it hasn't left my mind since I read it (not in a good way) and 2) I've been reading and consuming a lot of hip hop related materials lately (Dilla Time being one of them, the others elude me right now) and it's astounding they can describe how exciting and groundbreaking hip hop was when it started, and there is not even a FART of a hint of "it's exciting because people are poor" in any of these discussions. Which honestly renders the rest of your paragraph as lofty bullshit.

In terms of "cultural context", yes, one can listen to an early Public Enemy or Run DMC record in 2022 and be like "why the fuck was this critically acclaimed" because it sounds dated.... but that has nothing to do with their socioeconomic situation, and everything to do with the production sounding limited as fuck because they were using turntables, a mic, and 808 (Run DMC) or slamming together a shitload of James Brown samples (and obviously more than just JB) with archaic hardware, leading to an aesthetic that doesn't really jive with today's music.


in summation - you (Stories and Games) might find that hip hop has merit because the pioneers were poor. Normal people find that hip hop, the genre, has merit because it's you know, it's incredible on it's on accord. The first scenario makes me feel like I need to take a shower

but.... see like... I really disagree? Hip hop-- like the blues or often folk-- is (or at least initially was) coded as music made by downtrodden artists. Like I think that's just a thing, like I don't think its controversial or should be something that is "gross" to you (?)

Like, I mean the literal lyrical subject matter of so much early rap is about materialism/socioeconomics and/or are related to financial stuff likethe drug game and stuff, things these artists were pressured to do before they were making money from their rapping. edit: so, around 24 min in that video, the guy is saying how rap was a uniquely black art form that uniquely belonged to black Americans in a way that rock or other genres never did (blues and jazz and rock sure start off being a mostly black art form too I guess) and was widely understood as a "way out" of bad financial conditions.
