i wonder if noah asked dave
or if dave pitched the idea to noah
or if it was just a mutual hey "i/you should do the video"

I don't see how it remotely looks horrible. That seems like a weird complaint, but maybe your eyes are tuned to something I'm not seeing. I really love the colors, the saturation brings them out well, and the way the shots go really well with the song.
Loving this video! Couldn't believe Dave directed it when I saw that in the credits.
Also wanted to say that I agree 100% with the person who was analyzing the vid a couple of posts back...

Yeah I thought the dog attack was pretty comical as well.
Not usually a huge fan of music videos in general, and this one didn't change that.

This video seems like the most straight forward of any Animal Collective related videos... just a representation of the lyrics.
I like how you can see the pure ecstasy in the dogs face when he gets let loose and is able to bring down papa panda. Really nice imagery for "sick has to eat well too." And I love the dance he does with his defeater for a while. ....so beautifully done.
Really nice eye candy for a pretty morbid scene.

I can appreciate how well-done the video was, but it didn't add anything to my feeling of the song. That's all.

I used to love Lonely Wanderer until I heard Debussy's Arabesque No. 1. I think that Noah usually uses samples tastefully, but he's just singing simple descending notes over the recurring theme in that piece and it seems like a bit of a rip-off. I think the original piece is way more evocative with that part too. Whereas Tropic of Cancer is an example of a great way to sample an older piece...
Just my opinion though.

I do think "rip-off" is a bit harsh, but the guy is entitled to his opinion

Panda's entitled to making a song but the dude still shared some sour thoughts on it
Let's include everyone huh?

I agree that he didn't exactly dig the crates for that one. I love the Debussy piece, genuinely one of my favourite pieces of music and so evocative of a certain time in my life. I suppose this meant that I came at the song from a different angle but my enduring feeling was that the best part was the piano. I like the lyrics, though, and he does create a different atmosphere with it.

Yes "rip-off" is too harsh... I guess too derivative? It's a great song taken by itself which might be all that matters. For me though, the original is so overwhelming with its emotion that the way Noah uses the sample seems irreverent. I'm not questioning his right to use a sample from a 100+ year old piece or anything, Lonely Wanderer just doesn't have a punch anymore. That's what Selfish Gene is for

sampling is often a way to pay homage to something you like. I look at it this way, panda made a great tribute to that piece of music with lonely wander. it's a celebration of arabesque no.1. I get what you are saying but it doesn't take away any of the punch for me imo.

^Yeah I feel the same way. Or take for example Kendrick and that Isley Bros sample on i. That's an easily recognizable sample but it didn't take anything way from the song for me

First year of bootlegs I didn't really take tropic seriously cuz growing up pas de deux was my favorite song from the nutcracker and pandas thing just sounded like this quaint karaoke thing that was almost copying badly off of Tchais superior melody. But that kinda wore off and I totally dig it as a well used and badass sample now

maybe one could think about lonely wanderer and tropic of cancer as part of noah's exercise in taking samples from free/public domain places and trying to twist them to sound unique? like the oriental strings at the start of untying the knot

MCA/Beastie Boys/Dust Brothers did/used it better on Paul's Boutique.

Yeah, I hope someone can get a copy of the stream just as good as this tame impala's stream
or if it's possible the direct link would be better.
Unfortunately I can't try this myself, I'm going to be on the road back home and it sucks, I hope someone can make it.
The stream would be here at 5:00 PM PT

Damn too bad the backing vocals were missing in Boys Latin, must have been a tech malfunction?

That's any festival audience for you. People go there for only a handful of artists and spend the rest of their day standing listlessly while watching performances they couldn't care any less for.
