Want to share some thoughts on When You Left Me.

This seems to deal with issues of self-identity. The subject (ok let's just say Dave) has created the identity called "Avey" as a way to integrate with the world, and this worked out to his favor. At some point though, this identity "flew from his eyes" - that is, for some reason Avey became unavailable to live through. Evidence of these self-identity issues are in the first section. "Listening for names": could indicate seeking an identity. "Colors move on tees": t-shirts are a popular way to express yourself. The fact that the colors on them are blurred suggests a blurred, unclear identity. "Population sprawls": brings to mind a moving mass of people, faces lost in the crowd.

Dave and Avey attempt to connect to each other once more with "Can we both say it right now?
Any world can change". There's a desire to relive those blossoming rituals. In any case, Dave is grateful for what he has gotten out of this lost identity (and I'm sure Avey is thankful he got to be expressed as well!).

Personal thoughts/experiences

Identity is like liquid in that it only has meaning within the form it takes. Imagine a fortune cookie, opening up to reveal a scroll inside onto which is written: "Seek out the form, and within it you will spill".

For a while, I've been having identity problems similar to what's described above... I suppose it's possible I'm reading myself in these lyrics. There's things that want to be shared, but they've been trapped within my subjective experience, unsure of what form to take. When I've asked myself "Who am I?", I've never felt like there was a satisfying answer. Several months ago, I quit my job. I didn't have the right words to explain it at the time, but I needed to focus on something that was more important than anything that a job had to offer me. The world seemed blurry in the sense that nothing seemed interesting enough to grab onto.

Fortunately, in this space my identity feels like it's been growing. The past month especially has had a mystical feeling to it, moments in the present seeming beautiful to the point of tears. One such moment actually was triggered by the lyrics: "Want to know how this flower became this flower. Wanna bask in your rituals for finding the perfect day." When I heard this, it amazed me how well it expressed what I was doing at the time, even though I had never thought of it that way before. I am finding new rituals in which I can bask in to have perfect days. The old rituals weren't working, and had to be abandoned.

Recently, not due to this song, something triggered me to begin learning about plants. I spent about a month drilling myself on terms associated with leaves, stems, roots, fruits, ... and of course flowers. I remember that the first time I heard those lyrics was actually the first time I went hiking to see if I could find some plants to put theory to practice. And what would you know, despite it being in the desert and not having rained in over two months, after a few hours I found exactly one plant that was in bloom growing out of a crack in a rock wall, a rock wall which I have climbed several times in the past. I present to you, Stephanomeria pauciflora: https://i.snag.gy/1MRXAB.jpg, https://i.snag.gy/fJNwOG.jpg.

Todaa-aay, (about a week later), around the same spot where that flower was, I felt the need to write a poem. After writing it, I realized that it served as a response to this song. This caused me to look deeper into the lyrics and make this post. I named it just now after discovering that Dave has played new songs at a place called Mothlight, if I'm not mistaken. Seems pretty fitting.

Mothlight

A flower blooms
From a cocoon
Buried in the sand
Cupped in something's hand

The petals divide
Into moth wing eyes
Staring at the land
From which it began

A cypsela's flight
Beneath moonlight
Through the dusty air
Free to go somewhere

I say "dee are aw one for jay". Kinda clunky but Avey said in an interview that DR is a person's initials so I assume it's meant to be said that way. "Draw one for J" sound cool though so maybe just go with that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

J is also someone’s initials. DR is Dylan Rieder friend of the band, and J is for Avey and Abby’s aunt jackie

^so true. The first half has like a dusty barroom vibe, almost like Tin Pan Alley or something, but it's still so Avey. Then the second half feels like an incantation or ritual or something. Love the woodwind flourishes, make me think of gusts of wind like the lyrics. Seriously great track

It took me forever to realize that the little melody with the church bells is actually the end of Sports in July and not the beginning of When You Left Me lol

That makes sense because I remember Avey talking about trying to write songs in a Tin Pan Alley style around the time of Painting With. Maybe a little jazz influence with the horn in Lying in the Grass?

I remember during interviews for Painting With the dudes mentioned that they were trying to use samples in a different way, where it's less like a soundscape and more just like little snippets that stitch together certain parts of songs (like the Golden Girls clips for example)
I was thinking recently that Avey did a great job of using samples in a similar way on Eucalyptus...there are a ton of brief samples throughout that add so much to the environment of the album. It definitely has a cleaner, more precise sound than stuff like MPP which feels way more dense, probably also owing to the mixing/production of each album. Also these little sound snippets remind me of a pop up book, which might have been another description they used in PW interviews?

These are some of the moments I'm thinking of - seems like it especially happens on the back half of the album:
-In Pieces, the 2nd verse has some rly sweet sounds in the background
-In the last verse of PJ at about 3:30, that plucky sound alternating between 2 notes
-Coral Lords immediately after the big climactic autoharp section there's that rustling sound
-Sports in July, a lot of little stuff in the 1st half like the crackly piano & glockenspiel and the random drum hits

I keep finding new things to love about this album, feels so special
